sker··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
1. They already have such offering (VS Team Services).

2. Their competitors (GitLab, Bitbucket) already have that offering.

3. I don't think they're interested in GitHub for its revenue, but for its strategic value. GitHub has to protect its revenue model by disallowing free private repos, Microsoft can afford to be more flexible.

4. They've already made similar moves. They acquired Xamarin, which was expensive, and made it free.

sker··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Plus I'm sure under Microsoft they will have some sort of free private repos like GitLab, Bitbucket and Visual Studio Team Services already do.

Lack of free private repos is the main (only) reason why I don't use GitHub.

sker··on CityBikes: bike sharing networks around the world
Isn't bike sharing huge in China?

Edit: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/mar/22/bike-wars-doc...

> the world’s 15 biggest public bike shares are ranked. Thirteen of them are in China.

sker··on The Zimbu programming language
The closing curly braces without opening ones make me go full OCD.
sker··on The end of CyanogenMod
Plus Lineage seems like a much better brand name than CyanogenMod for mass adoption.

Though I would've called it Cyborg or something more analogous to Android.

sker··on Programming Language Popularity on GitHub and StackOverflow

    SQL (4.03%)
    Lines changed on GitHub: 1,347
    Tagged on StackOverflow: 363,595
It doesn't have that many lines on GH when you label it as SQL, but compare that to PL/SQL:

    PLSQL (0.16%)
    Lines changed on GitHub: 3,561,189
    Tagged on StackOverflow: 14,488
sker··on Programming Language Popularity on GitHub and StackOverflow
Yeah, it took forever to load here too.

It looks like this, for those who are curious: http://i.imgur.com/O576J4N.png

sker··on Google launches developer preview of Android Things
I wonder what will MS come up with to counteract this: Microsoft Windows Ultimate Surface Things.
sker··on Chrome 55 uses 30% less memory than 54
They're better. If I bookmark something with any service, chances of me ever checking that out again drop to nearly zero.

Tabs, by virtue of being there bugging you, are bookmarks, to-do lists, and task reminders all in one.

sker··on Apple iPhones Found to Have Violated Chinese Rival’s Patent
False equivalence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_equivalence

I see it all the time on the Internet:

- Atheists are "just as bad as" [insert religious group with millennia-old history of atrocities.] -- Just because they both try to convince you of something.

- Politician A is "just as corrupt as" Politician B. -- Nevermind that A just gave his cousin a job, while B gave away $500B in contracts to his sponsors.

sker··on What a $347B conglomerate holding company's web site looks like
That's how you act when you have nothing to prove.

I like that they treat 'web' like an acronym.

sker··on Visual Studio Code 1.2 released
Search and Replace in multiple files. That's among the top 10 features that should've been available since release 0.0.1 in any code editor. They're at 1.2 now and still no cigar. Who's the project manager who keeps saying "nah, don't need it"?

Then again, it's a good litmus test. If you find yourself opening your old editor to do something so basic your new editor can't do: what the hell are you doing in your new editor?

sker··on Information About Trending Topics
Considering the state of American right-wing politics, I don't blame them.
sker··on Improving Angular performance with 1 line of code
Dude should have made a small fortune selling optimization services to those big corps.
sker··on Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14316 Released
I vowed to never "upgrade" to Windows 10, but this really makes it tempting. Damn you, Microsoft.
sker··on Amazon Web Services revenue rises 81% year over year
Interesting that it rose about the same amount as Microsoft's cloud revenue which was around 90%.

Anyone has numbers for Google?

sker··on Iceland makes blasphemy legal
Meanwhile New Zealand will put you in jail for offending someone on the Internet:

sker··on JavaScript at 20
I never understood why HN likes slideshows so much. Am I the only one who finds them completely, 100% useless without the audio of the presentation?
sker··on C# 7 Work List of Features
Man these guys don't stop. They haven't even released C# 6 and now we're discussing 7.

With the "strong interest" features and type providers, is there any reason left to use F#?

Also, I don't see why array slicing would require CLR support. That would be a welcome addition.

sker··on Techempower Web Framework Benchmarks Round 10
I'd like to see some ASP.NET running on Owin. Perhaps I'll find the time to add it myself before round 11.
sker··on We Can’t Let John Deere Destroy the Idea of Ownership
What happens when we have computers implanted in our brains? Do I no longer own my brain?
sker··on x*sin(y)
You mean WordPress? I want a WordPress with this. It must be responsive and SEO optimized.
sker··on Ask HN: How viable is F# on Mono for real-life web apps?
I second this. I worked on an ASP.NET MVC product that ran just fine on Mono. This was in the old 2.x days. While I didn't test FastCGI, the founder did, several times. He always told me mod_mono performed better.

I wonder what the TechEmpower benchmarks would look like if they used mod_mono instead of FastCGI.

sker··on The Meteoric Rise of DigitalOcean
> their support docs are comprehensive and easy to use

Yes, I've even used them several times on non-DO servers because they're quite good and rank high on Google.

sker··on Ways to avoid using the word 'very'
I was always bothered by the overuse of the word "pretty" on the Internet in place of "very." As a non-native English speaker, I grew up thinking of pretty as synonym of beautiful. Now that I see everyone using it as they would use very, I find it hard to parse.
sker··on Best development book I've read, has no code in it
Have you (or anyone else) read Code Complete? If so, how do you feel about it? I started reading it because everyone recommended it, but I stopped at page 100 or so, because I felt it was getting no where.
sker··on Web Framework Benchmarks - Round 8
HHVM and Dart seem to be the two new fast performers in town showing impressive performance in some tests. JS has been falling off the charts compared to some of the first rounds, but still a good option performance-wise. C# keeps sucking badly. I miss Nimrod/Jester, I always wanted to see it in the top 10.
sker··on Node.js Tools for Visual Studio
You can't maximize it, but you can set its width and height. Right click in taskbar -> Properties -> Layout. There are settings for size, position and buffer size. I have mine the size of the whole window and with the biggest possible buffer, as well as a more readable font.
sker··on Visual Studio 2013
VS 2013 has IntelliSense support for TypeScript and AngularJS, although it does ask you to install the latest TypeScript plug-in. I'm using it full time and I prefer it over SublimeText, probably because I used to do a lot of C# and I'm used to the environment.
sker··on Amazon WorkSpaces
If you could spin up an instance for an hour, this would be useful to those who want to buy from US stores that block by IP (cough Nexus 5 cough), but don't want to go the VPN route.
