sjellen··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
If you have the means, volunteering is totally choice.
sjellen··on More than half of humans on track to be overweight or obese by 2035 – report
Seems to be a lot of different things that are on the 2035 timeline. It's almost as if ...
sjellen··on Millions of Americans nearing retirement age with no savings
There are many reason for this of course, but a very high divorce rate for the retiring generation doesn't help.
sjellen··on Why You’re Angry at Netflix
I'm not angry. I left and because I have no media I own in your app, I don't have a reason to open your app ever again.
sjellen··on The age 30 crisis and seasons of a man‘s life
Wait until you get to 40 and you've seen enough beginnings, middles and ends of things that you have a greater understanding of how the world around you isn't forged in bedrock but is in a constant state of change. How you've been lead around by Madison Ave in a fear of missing out. There is a joy of missing out that come in at middle age. You can honestly say to yourself that something isn't worth wasting your time on. Not out of a close-mindedness but because you been to those dungeons and they have been picked clean.
sjellen··on Fear of opiates is causing patients to needlessly suffer severe pain
Fear of getting caught in the injury to bankruptcies pipeline is causing people to suffer pain. They’re right to fear opiates.
sjellen··on $500 a Month, No Strings: Chicago Experiments with a Guaranteed Income
This, except.. its not unintentional.
sjellen··on Why does Apple think my M1 Pro MacBook Pro is suddenly worth nothing?
I don't know. Why did Funcoland only offer me $15 for a game I bought the month for $50 before as a kid? But at least they didn't give me a song and dance about how they were doing me a favor and the burden of sheltering the item they were buying from me like on Pawn Stars.
sjellen··on VALL-E: Microsoft’s new zero-shot text-to-speech model
I know of a bunch of audiobooks that I'd rather listen to the author than listen to the current person narrating or in other cases I'd rather hear the person the book is about instead of the author.
sjellen··on Hard truths I learned when I got laid off from my SWE job
Being laid off can and will forever change your career risk tolerance. When I got laid off in 2008, I stayed at the next job probably 10 years longer than I should have because of effects of being laid off.
sjellen··on Facebook addiction increases depression severity among already depressed people
All social media and news does this. Every person who says their hobby is 'news' are the most angry and depressed people you will ever meet.
sjellen··on Amazon packages burn in India, final stop in broken recycling system
In what is about to become the year 2023, the most effective way of recycling is to limit your purchases altogether. Some day go through your Amazon purchase history for the last decade and see how much absolute garbage purchases you made.

Resist buying stuff you don't really need. Can you repurpose an item? Then turn to the recycling industry and maybe it will find a way back.

Resist > Reuse > Recycle

sjellen··on Tough time building components of a site using vanilla CSS. What to do?
For someone of your experience, I would go to a site like Codepen and search for something you would like to build. Then I would find an example using the same tools you want to use. I would mess around and break that example until you figure out what does what. Then open a fresh pen and try to rebuild it the way you want. Rebuild: not copy.

I used Codepen as the best site because it’s very beginner and frontend friendly.

sjellen··on YouTube Cements Its TV Shift with NFL Sunday Ticket $2B a Year, Seven-Years Deal
In the end, the real winner of streaming was sports leagues.

They were able to continue raise fees on cables companies while being cables top draw. Have their own streaming which they for the most part kept blackout policies. Create bidding wars for scraps to streaming services to help legitimize them.

In the era of "content", sports is the ultimate renewable resource.

sjellen··on The $42B Question: Why Aren’t Americans Ditching Big Banks?
If Americans can't afford a $400 emergency, then they can't afford the risk of switching banks. In paycheck to paycheck living, the large bank is both a bedrock of an otherwise unstable living condition and an Overlord you dare not cross.
sjellen··on Netflix CEO calls resisting ads a mistake
Of the mistakes that Netflix has made, not having Ads wasn't one of them.
sjellen··on Netflix will charge $6.99 a month for new ad-supported tier starting Nov 3 in US
It must be. Because while Reed Hastings is talking about the death of linear tv, his competitors are incorporating linear options as a gateway to their streaming product.

If the large business Netflix had been paying attention to the business news instead of trying to get into the Hollywood trades, they would've seen the coming storm.

sjellen··on Netflix will charge $6.99 a month for new ad-supported tier starting Nov 3 in US
Netflix would rather have 4 months of my money than give me a discount for a yearly subscription. Thats my beef.

It never had to come to an ad supported tier. There were moves to be made that would have prevented the ad tier but they spent money on dead ends. Just as an example, why didn't they buy MGM? It served many of their needs.

sjellen··on Meta Meets Microsoft
Microsoft gets it cloud gaming/gamepass on another platform. That was the big takeaway for me. Very early Netflix, get your streaming service on every platform possible before they see you as a threat or opportunity.
sjellen··on You Hated Your Cable Package. Your Streaming Services Are Bringing It Back
The Warmer Bros Discovery investors call slides basically laid out the future of streaming.

You'll have threes choices

1. FAST 2. AST 3. Ad free version with a premium tax applied to make you more likely to subscribe to AST.

For me the quality of entertainment has dropped to the point where I'll probably just drop all streaming and buy the things I like on sale.

sjellen··on Ask HN: How is it possible that the 45 yo Tom Brady still plays professionally?
In the early to mid 00's the NFL changed their rules to protect QBs more.

Also the athletes that make enough to spend close to a million dollars a year on body maintenance and conditioning will see a great benefit in longevity.

sjellen··on Bob Dole has died
Read the first couple of chapters of “What it Takes” specifically the ones on Dole and then look at the current pool of politicians. You needn’t wonder why things are in a state of decline. The greatest hardship a modern politician has been through is losing a Twitter battle.
