scardine··on Disclosure of autism at work holds risks and benefits
Sure, I agree autism can be very debilitating and pose a heavy burden on the individual and the family. In my family we tend to fell on the lighter side of the spectrum.

My 5yo boy is officially diagnosed and he is really smart. My father was definitely autistic although never diagnosed.

I was lucky enough to have a false twin brother (11 months younger) that was the most popular guy at school while I was the weirdest (until I started emulating his behavior in social situations).

Today I believe my brain is just wired differently. Some of the most powerful structures in the brain (the GPUs) are devoted analyzing faces and reactions; in my case they are used for other purposes so I had to learn how to process faces using the CPU which is a bit tiresome but works well enough.

scardine··on Disclosure of autism at work holds risks and benefits
Many things classified today as autism spectrum disorders are hardly incapacitating so I would not call it a mental illness.
scardine··on Let's Encrypt Root Trusted by All Major Root Programs
I use digitalocean, but also have a few wildcard manually verified with the --manual flag and a bit of cut & paste. It is 5 minutes every 3 months but it is free so I haven't bothered to automate it (just get an intern doing it every couple months). Lame, I know.
scardine··on Eden: a Lua-based scripting language in Clojure
Except for lisps, few languages let you name functions/variables using dashes and other symbols but looks like any legal name in Clojure is fair game:

    function people-eq?(p1 p2)
      if p1 == p2 then
        println("Are Equal!")
      else
        println("Not Equal!")
      end
    end
Interesting.
scardine··on Developments in tech in Toronto over the past seven years
May be Canada can't attract top talent from USA but the best half of the team that worked with me in Brazil the last couple years are now in Canada, Ireland or Germany.
scardine··on Django 2.1 released
I just use plain text-areas and markdown - it avoids a lot of footguns from text-editor-like widgets.
scardine··on Django 2.1 released
I have and it works but they completely revamped the implementation in 2.0. I'm procrastinating the upgrade because it is a royal pain.
scardine··on Launch HN: JITX (YC S18) – Automating Circuit Board Design
My first job was designing circuit boards using a software called PCAD, 30 years ago. It did a pretty good job with automatic routing for software running on a i386 PC with a couple MB of RAM.
scardine··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
Brazil is a huge country and and saying Brazilians are always late is like saying all North Americans are ignorant of non-local history and cultures.

I have a profound respect for other people's time and demand the same respect for mine. This is not uncommon in Sao Paulo city.

scardine··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
As an introvert I avoid being the first guest to arrive or the last to leave.
scardine··on Inventory of CO2 available for terraforming Mars
Not exactly this one but you could dig moholes. I guess a mohole deep enough to get you 1 atm would be too hot for humans but I will not even try to do the math.
scardine··on Liquid water 'lake' revealed on Mars
Just finished "Red Mars", the book aged quite well for the scifi genre.

SPOILER ALERT:

The book ends with a dissident faction of Mars settlers living in a hidden water ice dome under the polar cap.

scardine··on Secret Life of an Autistic Stripper
That. Your attempts at entertaining small talk often will be perceived as sassy, cynical or arrogant.
scardine··on 2 Weeks with Ubuntu Linux on the Dell XPS 13
> Once Adobe products start to support linux, there will be an even better adoption.

Is this being considered at all? My wife is a professional designer that likes Krita but can't stand gimp/inkscape.

scardine··on Love letter to Vue
I like business logic in JavaScript and presentation logic in templates - for me Vue fits the bill.
scardine··on Ask HN: Why the Hacker News community is always hating on new ideas?
My theory is that communities like HN and StackOverflow are a magnet for very smart people with a very direct style of communication. Yes, they sound sassy or snarky but most have no intention to be mean. They just lack most of the brain circuitry to refrain from comment or beat around the bush.
scardine··on Nagini: A Static Verifier for Python [pdf]
Since the typing module used to be one of the slowest modules in core you paid a performance penalty even if cpython does no care about type annotations (improved in 3.7). So it does have something to do with performance...

There are other implementations and Python supersets that do use type annotations for optimization and I don't see this trend slowing.

scardine··on Ask HN: As a team lead how to handle project going off the rails?
PS: you do get some leeway when you just joined a company, enjoy your honeymoon grace period.
scardine··on Ask HN: As a team lead how to handle project going off the rails?
This is how things should run if the work culture was logic based but with rare exceptions it isn't.

As a borderline autistic person I have a very direct communication style and lost account of how many times I burned myself for failing to "beat around the bush".

You can't say "the project is doomed" even if it is true. You can't say it will be so over budget and take so long that it would be better to cut the losses now. Don't expect to go unpunished for saying "the king is nude".

According to my experience both parents are absolutely right, but the first is how most organizations work and the second is an ideal seldom found in the real world.

scardine··on Show HN: Hacker News job trends
In the end hiring is a lottery for both sides. It is like finding a good marriage in a speed date.
scardine··on California law requires businesses to let you cancel your subscription online
Tried to cancel an Upwork account, a message said I should call a number in USA. I called and a message told me I should call between x AM to y PM business days.

It is somewhat expensive to call from Brazil just to hear a recorded message saying the call was useless. In the end I was able to cancel using their web chat. The experience just confirmed my opinion about the company.

scardine··on FWD:Everyone
Of course if he is dead and is a public figure and the other part discloses it the exchange is now part of history. What is wrong with that?

I love to read correspondence from folks like Newton[1] for example and I want my grandchildren to be able to read Jobs exchanges as well.

scardine··on Python 3 at Facebook
Anything improving dict performance will have significant impact because lots of things in Python are implemented using dicts under the hood (including namespaces).
scardine··on Layoffs at Watson Health Reveal IBM’s Problem with AI

scardine··on Ask HN: How to start working as a contractor?
Not the OP but the secret is to pick a niche and attend events related to your industry segment. I'm active in the local Python meetups, they are a great source of business leads.
scardine··on Ask HN: How to start working as a contractor?
Sure man, shoot. And if by any means you get nearby São Paulo lets have a coffee/beer/whatever.
scardine··on Ask HN: How to start working as a contractor?
Did this transition 10 years ago (Brazil). It takes some discipline. I guess the $100,000 CAD is not that good if you are working full time for them (specially in the most expensive provinces) because you will not have time for business development - and having just one big client is putting all eggs in one basket.

In USA health insurance is probably the most expensive thing for a contractor but I guess in Canada you have your bases covered.

My advice is to subcontract other people as soon as possible and invest the extra time to learn about sales, marketing and negotiation, then go after new business. Currency exchange rates are excellent for subcontracting from Brazil or Argentina.

Good luck and drop an email if you want to ask anything.

scardine··on Face recognition in images and video with Python
Check out the talk "Militarizing Your Backyard with Python: Computer Vision and the Squirrel Hordes"[1] from PyCon 2012. He wired a water canon to a camera able to tell squirrels from birds:

> Has your garden been ravaged by the marauding squirrel hordes? Has your bird feeder been pillaged? Tired of shaking your fist at the neighbor children? Learn how to use Python to tap into computer vision libraries and build an automated sentry water cannon capable of soaking intruders.

scardine··on Cryptocurrencies: looking beyond the hype
> Receiving money via Credit Card is surprisingly risky for the merchant.

In this aspect cryptocurrencies are surprisingly dangerous for the customer because there is no easy way to revert a transaction done by mistake or fraud (lets say someone cracked your wallet).

With credit cards in the worst case you just screw the merchant and I guess this is what marketplaces will end up doing instead of setting up their own escrow systems in order to protect both sides because handling disputes is hard work.

scardine··on Ask HN: How do you manage your manager?
I can say what not to do: never do something to undermine or expose your boss no matter how incompetent he is.

Personally I let my boss take all credit for my work (not really, just make everything I can in order to get him promoted). When he gets promoted he is likely to carry me up with him (if not I'm working for the wrong boss). It paid out several times.
