sammyo··on Local man switches to Arch, tells no one
Wifi was a pain occasionally until I went with Gnome. The cmd line tools were a struggle with some web based authentication schemes.
sammyo··on B.1.1.529
Deeply agree with your sentiment, yet, information yearns to be free? No not quite the right catchphrase. As a society we need mechanisms developed to rapidly peer review at a kind of instant level, "quality report", "new untrusted", "rehash of wacko". Some indication. Sometimes some twitter threads that are authentic do this. The disinformation threads badly need stronger vetting, and rapid discrediting or deletion.
sammyo··on mRNA Vaccines May Pack More Persistent Punch Against Covid-19 Than Thought
Right, but in the case of a vaccine, you wait, you die.
sammyo··on Ask HN: What do you make of all the recent UFO stuff?
Or broader, what do they want not talked about? Funny stories are often released as a distraction. There are potentially some seriously embarrassing stories about issues around january 6th. What else do the generals want ignored, perhaps SpaceX restructuring an entire industry?
sammyo··on Suez Canal Not Releasing Ever Given Ship and Crew Until Compensation Is Paid
Just a reminder that the international admiralty laws are very different than any country legal codes, and generally utterly non-intuitive. Responsibility usually follows the vessel and is not related directly to the captain or whoever is at the helm.
sammyo··on Arch Linux now has an official installer
Wait, this is real? Not an april fools post?
sammyo··on Show HN: Learn Spanish quickly while reading
Really interesting approach. I've bookmarked the page. You should consider gathering emails to give updates.

This should be the new killer app for e-readers. That tech is generally closed with too low powered processors due to power requirements for it to be implemented in any current generation. But it is just right for this kind of reading/learning.

Are you doing the translation?

sammyo··on Ask HN: What is the most complex concept you understand?
Actually the simple rule is choose apples so sour and hard they can barely be eaten raw, smaller the better.

Oh and De Morgan's theorem.

sammyo··on 'We're going to lose fast': U.S. Air Force war games regarding China
The first battles certainly, but unless MAD occurs we have at least a few Patton/Eisenhower/MacArthur's that would rise to the occasion. And as impressive at the Chinese are at tech they are in a sense dependant on yankee ingenuity which would get cut off quick.
sammyo··on Bitcoin’s Overnight Collapse Probability Is About 50%
Very likely in a serious run all the crypto exchanges will crash hard quickly and for an extended time (forever? ;-) essentially stopping trading except for personal direct transactions.
sammyo··on Ask HN: Can we ever escape Earth's gravity without using chemical propulsion?
Perhaps a railgun plus a skyhook? Railgun up the side of a mountain on the equator and an orbiting station with a capture mechanism that is in a sense the strongest bungee cord imaginable. 17k mph is a lot of speed to make a grab. Exiting the railgun at mach 3-4 at 30,000 feet has engineering issues and still has accelerate above mach 20 for a stable orbit.
sammyo··on The Next Leap in Self-Driving: Prediction
Looking forward prediction should be superseded by announcement. Each vehicle should be broadcasting it's travel vector and next plan to alter that vector. At some point the SDC traffic will look like a high speed motorcycle team weaving between each other, a pedestrian wanders into the middle is just avoided. High efficiency, high safety.
sammyo··on The 'folly' of buying a fixer-upper yacht
There are a lot of folks out on the water in "ugly" boats that are not costing the arm&leg but safe and a lot of fun. Get a 100 foot boat, that is a boat that looks great from 100 feet away. Sailing is totally possible for anyone, do all the maintenance yourself, also a really good idea to deeply know every line and turnbuckle when out in the ocean days from a mechanic.

OMG they bought a wood boat, the only way to keep a wood boat is to start a foundation or be a billionaire.

sammyo··on Self-driving car without “murder pedestrian” mode will never move in Manhattan
Totally an art project.

And stopping is optional if there's a slight gap between the gaggle or one seems a bit slow.

sammyo··on E Ink just unveiled a new type of color e-paper
This will be great for nautical charts, quick refresh is not needed and often used in strong sunlight.
sammyo··on [dead]
HN needs a TIL tag.

(Would probably reduce the flow by 80%)

sammyo··on Ask HN: Are we heading for another recession?
Yes but ALL estimates are bunk. Whoever can predict business cycles keeps it more secret than the NSA inner sanctum.
sammyo··on Millennials Continue to Leave Big Cities
"nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded" -Satchel Paige.
sammyo··on Ask HN: I’m scared of losing GMail access. Do email protection laws exist?
I was thinking of basically using gmail as a filter. Get a custom domain, forward all email to gmail then read via another service.
sammyo··on Ask HN: What comes after social networks?
Shared Virtual Reality...with haptic interface, nudge nudge, wink wink.
sammyo··on Seasteading
And if they ever manage to build a few houses on a barge outside territorial waters, about 12 miles, they'll call on the closest government for emergency rescue a few hours into the first good storm.
sammyo··on SpaceX’s Unnerving Silence on an Explosive Incident
Compare to the NTSB's "unnerving" silence on every investigation.
sammyo··on Christie’s sells its first AI portrait for $432k
An art photographer had a show where he presented his original photos of... other famous photographs. Lovely controversy about what is an original photo.

It's just what a segment of the art world does - mess with the definition of the art world. Look at Banksy's million dollar shredder.

sammyo··on A pilot project for a new floating city will have 300 homes
Have never heard of a seasteader that had actually spent significant time out on the open ocean.
sammyo··on The race to the riches of asteroids
Move the nasty industrial processes out there, factories in space and only ship high end processed materials.

Once there is rocket fuel in large quantity "boost backwards". Slow a well designed space plane to a safe entry velocity and fly to a regular airport. It's and idea that can not even be imagined until there is a filling station in space but should be standard after the first water asteroid.

sammyo··on Easiest Path to Riches on the Web? An Initial Coin Offering
In many cases crying "ponzi" is likely an exclamation of "something wrong here" which your comment gives several examples. But cash, check and other instruments all have something wrong.

I'll suggest that the difference isn't that people know the details of how for example checks clear, few non-experts learn all the details, BUT virtually everyone knows where to go if there is a problem (bank branch). Most non-experts at this point in crypto currency would have no idea where to even go to investigate a problem.

sammyo··on Maintainers make the world go round: Innovation is an overrated ideology
Maintainers make the world go round, innovators MAKE the world.
sammyo··on Ask HN: What do you want from a coffee startup?
Not long ago (historically speaking) one could get a cuppa joe for one thin dime. Not great, but usually drinkable. So with inflation the equivalent would be a quarter. A basic affordable cup of coffee could have a significant market.
sammyo··on Android is imploding, and there's nothing that can be done to stop it
I see no stagnation, there's a growing spectrum of models from the lowest cost chromebook to insanely powerful gaming and video production optimized units. There is a large midrange that is just good enough for use and little need for higher performance that seems stable with not much market pressure to shift away from the "i5" sweet spot.
