Just a reminder that the international admiralty laws are very different than any country legal codes, and generally utterly non-intuitive. Responsibility usually follows the vessel and is not related directly to the captain or whoever is at the helm.
I thought the canal's own pilot was at the helm when this happened. It's hard to get facts on what really occurred.
Someone has to pay, i guess. The challenge will be of course, to maintain a civil discourse. It will be important for both sides to not be seen as acting petulantly. As is so often the case when huge amounts of money is involved. But i'm afraid that the discourse will completely melt down before long.
