saint-loup··on Telo MT1
It's interesting to note that Béhar has founder credit for Telo Trucks, he's not a one-shot contractor. I guess his designs studio is involved with the new version as well.

saint-loup··on Protecting your email address via SVG instead of JavaScript
At that point, isn't adding a good old contact form a simpler solution? You can link it with your email address or other channels. It can even works with static websites, I hooked up mine with Nextcloud Forms.

I appreciate the hacker creativity at display here, but as other said obfuscating an email address raises accessibility issues. Hiding content from some programs and not others (spam bots vs assistive technologies) seems inherently a losing game, for you or for users.

saint-loup··on Structuralism as a Philosophy of Mathematics
Sorry, but if there's one thing the last forty years taught us, it's the fact that Bordintillism is a collective failure.
saint-loup··on Don't use Discord as your Q&A forum
IMHO, Github issues vs Discord is a false dilemma. Searching in Discord or searching through hundred of issues with months of comments are equally bad.

A place to report issues and a place to discuss have their use, but any project needs comprehensive documentation and a FAQ page. Yes, many won't read them. But also, many will.

saint-loup··on Spectrolite – Mac app to make colorful risograph prints and zines more easily
To answer hypotheses from others:

> Will there be a Windows version?

> Currently there is no active plan to make a Windows version. We'll post here if that changes.

saint-loup··on Radiation-hardened Quine (2014)
No matter how many times you kill him, Quine rises from his tomb, his hand showing through the dirt to point at a rabbit.
saint-loup··on Software bugs that cause real-world harm
There's quite an interesting book on the topic of real-wold harm, mainly from an user interface point of view.

saint-loup··on The Best Pens for 2023: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
Your comment opened my eyes on the matter a little bit.

As some others in this page, I loathe the act of writing, but it's also a negative feedback loop where I use disposable ballpoint pen. I remember I used to prefer foutain pen in high school.

Still, for my case I see two potential downsides with foutain pen:

- mobility (train trips and bike commuting). I remember instances of leaks.

- Infrequent use. I'll keep being a keyboard-first note-taker. :)

I guess I need to shop for shake-proof, non-drying pen and cartridges.

saint-loup··on GitHub is sued, and we may learn something about Creative Commons licensing
Here is a dedicated website from the plaintiffs team. https://githubcopilotlitigation.com/

Interestingly, Matthew Butterick (of Practical Typography fame) is co-counsel on this. Programmer, lawyer and typesetting expert, damn. https://matthewbutterick.com/

saint-loup··on A chill driving game with procedurally generate scenic landscapes
Me: nice, a chill, contemplative game, just what I need.

Also me: try to counter-steer at 100 mph.

saint-loup··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
I observed the change in tone in Mozilla blog posts, from experts talking about their craft to marketspeak.

Even posts I should be professionally partial to, like those about UI design, rub me of the wrong way. It's often full of "creating delightful experiences" and "streamlining a seamless flow".

saint-loup··on The Old Reader
I use the official extension from Nextcloud. It has an user interface in the nextcloud web app and a dedicated mobile client. Probably not as fully featured as other services, but it perfectly fits my needs and if you already has a Nextcloud instance, it's just one click away from install.
saint-loup··on Why championship chess sets are so expensive
Thanks for this video.

As a fan of "craftsmanship porn" videos, I feel seen. :)

saint-loup··on The absurd complexity of server-side rendering
Come on, Trisomorphic rendering or Distributed Persistent Rendering are pretty simple, basically these are just [insert joke about monoid in the category of endofunctors].

saint-loup··on Custom JavaScript controls can't capture the nuance of form fields (2021)
Recent discovery: there's a native <datalist> element, well supported except for Firefox@Android. It's a combo of <select> and filtering (a combo box, to use the Windows parlance).

Just like for any UX debate: _it depends_. The level of customization needed depends on the type of app, the type of user, the type of use case.

saint-loup··on Parcel CSS: A new CSS parser, compiler, and minifier
From the Parcel CSS page : it does 'tree shaking', which automatically eliminates unused code. Not details on what that implies, though. Tools like PurgeCSS (used by Tailwind pre-v3) comb through the HTML for matching selectors, but I'm not sure if Parcel does the same thing.

Anyway, as others comments said, these kind of tools nowadays are more 'transformers' than mere 'minifiers'.

saint-loup··on Show HN: A simple hand drawn HTML/CSS theme
Erratum: more round. Rounder.
saint-loup··on Show HN: A simple hand drawn HTML/CSS theme
Hi, it looks really great. Reminds me of XKCD-inspired chart themes.

Several issues to better respect UI standards:

- Controls should have `cursor:pointer` so it show a hand on hover.

- Controls should have an active style.

- Clicking on a label associated with a checkbox should select/unselect the checkbox, just like radio buttons.

- Radio buttons should be visually more distinct from checkboxes, maybe by making them less round.

saint-loup··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
Besides marketing tactics brought up by sibling comments, isn't Chrome pre-installed on quite a few OEM computers brands?
saint-loup··on Masked email from Fastmail and 1Password
I'm in the same situation, but with Bitwarden and not Lastpass. It's more of a hassle, but you can go to Settings > Masked Mails and generate mails as you wish.

saint-loup··on Deurbanising the Web [pdf]
This experiment is interesting, but not so bold or novel when you consider the culture around making zines (small, DIY, often quirky magazines). The creativity there is amazing and medium-wise it's often "hybrid" (print-oriented but shared online).

For instance there's this tool to help creating zines. https://alienmelon.itch.io/electric-zine-maker

saint-loup··on An app for M1 Macs that plays the sound of a fan as CPU usage goes up
About the "sonification" of computer processes there is this experiment, recently shared on HN:
