sahaj··on Microduck
I would like it to pick up shoes, clothes etc. Not sure the beak would work, it would block the camera and prevent the bot from walking forward. Presumably, it could walk backwards and drag clothes, but anything rigid might block the camera.

I think magnetically aligned physical pin connections are better. Charge faster, generate less heat, and better for the battery. Wireless charging is cool, but not sure why it would need to be wireless in this case.
sahaj··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
Watch it recover in the next 3 days. This is a buying oppo if I've seen one. The real losers are the companies that have yet to gain a userbase as large as G.
sahaj··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
This is the real reality.
sahaj··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
But the criminals and illegals and the worst of the worst and the drugs. Think of the children that are being fed illegal drugs thru tubes put in by the trans-national trans gangs.

sahaj··on Amazon CEO says AI agents will soon reduce company's corporate workforce
It has more to do with the workforce wage demands and their output. Imagine if we all think that AI will get rid of our job at some point. We will work harder and demand less money do that work. All large corps did huge coordinated cuts in workforce in 2022-2023, and now there's this narrative. They are simply trying to get us to do more work for less money.

The Google Fiber project was always meant to push the carriers into competition. Google knew that if they didn't launch Google Fiber, none of their other ventures or the internet as a whole, could be as successful. Google paid big money for YouTube and the plan was always to turn it into the service it is today. At the time, there were also worries whether the carriers would restrict services (aka net neutrality) or if they would charge by GB. Launching Google Fiber made it such that the carriers had to start competing and upgrade their infrastructure.

If it wasn't for Google Fiber, I'm certain that we'd be stuck with 20mbps speeds, the cable/DSL monopoly, and we wouldn't have the likes of the OTT services and the choices that we have today. Or at least it would have been delayed by quite a bit.

I worked for a company that was an equipment vendor for Google Fiber and other service providers.

sahaj··on Anti-Anti-Adblocker uBlock filter to get rid of the annoying YouTube message
I don't follow what one has to do with the other. Sounds like quite a stretch to compare or relate the two there. I could just be missing what you are implying there.
sahaj··on Why Nvidia Keeps Winning
It's the best Android TV/Gaming device around, even by todays standards. It's stable and does what it was designed to do. With zero marketing from Google or Nvidia, the mass market obviously didn't care for this type of product and category but the device itself is great and works flawlessly. The Nvidia Game app also bundled and pushed the Nvidia game streaming concept around GeForce Now. Overall, Nvidia gave put their best foot forward with this device, providing standout support for both HW and SW.

sahaj··on Why Nvidia Keeps Winning
Excellent point! Jensen is very focused and the company has worked incredibly hard on whatever they've put out there. The Shield is a testament of this focus. They find a budding niche and double down on building it from nothing. Most "self-driving" cars have Nvidia gear for a reason.
sahaj··on Purchase and manage domains directly through Bluesky
The Bluesky infra would not be able to handle scale without invite-only clownshow. Meta can open the floodgates without breaking a sweat.

sahaj··on Tesla video promoting self-driving was staged, engineer testifies
It's hard for some to see this point of view unfortunately, no matter how you try it. Elon has been intentionally skirting and blurring the line between lying and marketing for a while now.

Don't short if can't afford to. Remember shorting has unlimited risk. What you should do is buy a put option, if possible.

sahaj··on Google Makes So Much Money, It Never Had to Worry About Financial Discipline
"All of Google's products are complementary products that create lock-in"

I disagree. Chrome was created to be a standards based browser, Android to unify the different phone operating systems circa 2004. I picked Google products because they allowed me to get out if I needed to. Gmail provides IMAP, POP. Docs and Music let you take out your data as needed. Google intentionally creates a way to get your data out. All of these things require foresight and work to pull off.

Does the lock-in exist because no one else is offering the same service? Potentially. But the intention of the company when they created these services was to create the best service, not a lock-in service.

sahaj··on The bizarre role reversal of Apple and Microsoft
The next iPhone will likely have a USB-C port. They couldn't have changed the lightening port on the iPhone after only being on the iPhone for a single generation.
sahaj··on AI, Apple and Google
One bold difference it seems between the companies is that Apple idea cycle lives around the release of the iPhone or hardware, though may change in the future. Google, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. The idea cycle is always ongoing (think core app updates) and hardware is an afterthought or accompanies later. This likely will lead to different outcomes for AI implementation for each respective company.

"the promise of extracting new insight from all sorts of data pools will not always be met."

While certainly true, we can all agree that not having access to these data pools is a disadvantage.

sahaj··on More efficient memory-management could enable chips with thousands of cores
N00b question. With more cores, wouldn't it also mean there's more overhead to "managing" process execution? There are probably some specific applications where it makes sense to have more cores, but does the everyday mobile user benefit from having thousands of cores?
sahaj··on Amazon Underground
One problem with Amazon App Store on Android phones is that if I replace my Android phone, I have to start all over again. Using the Google ecosystem, it's a matter of signing in and all my backed up apps and data are reinstated. There's a lot more friction to keep using the Amazon App Store/Underground app than there is with Google Play Store.
