rpledge··on Obama's data.gov CIO quits White House
Prediction: Eric Schmidt replaces him
rpledge··on Have you ever printed a boarding pass?
This is very true, I learned this yesterday when I accidentally picked up a Sharpie instead of a whiteboard marker. Colouring over the mistake with a whiteboard marker worked like a charm!
rpledge··on Major Canadian ISP admits throttling World of Warcraft
Interestingly WoW uses bit torrent to distribute patches to users, so its not uncommon to have P2P traffic occurring while playing WoW.
rpledge··on The Chair
Interesting, didn't know that. It makes me wonder if the success Apple has had in mobile is due to their better understanding of software. Has Sony/Ericsson iterated on their video editing feature? Apple definitely gets that software is never done; I can't think of another mobile device company that constantly improves not only the core (i.e. OS) software but also improves its value adds (iBooks, GarageBand, iMovie, iWork, Remote, etc...) RIM comes to mind, but I don't have much experience with RIM devices.
rpledge··on .42: new experimental, all numeric top-level domain
So if my IP is XXX.XXX.XXX.42 I can expect misconfigured clients to be trying to connect to me constantly? What could possible go wrong!
rpledge··on Ask HN: Who's hiring? (September 2010)
Thanks, I meet most of the required skills on your list. Is the best way to get in touch the email address in your HN profile?
rpledge··on Ask HN: Who's hiring? (September 2010)
I'm a little interested, do you have a URL with more info?
rpledge··on Fork it
Not sure who down voted you, you have a good point. I'm not a big StackOverflow follower, but if I had a generic kernel question I wouldn't ask it on a Ubuntu Q&A forum.
rpledge··on Kevin Rose steps down as CEO of Digg
Yes, I can see how taking the time to educate yourself would slow down your hobby of spewing out libellous crap on the Internet
rpledge··on Kevin Rose steps down as CEO of Digg
Kevin said right after Jay left that he was only a temp CEO. Did you even read the other comments on this story?
rpledge··on DuckDuckGo on This Week in Startups
Pfft, do you really only watch people you 100% agree with? Do you really believe you see all sides of any issue when you shut out people you disagree with on principle? I find it sad that critical thinking is a lost art today.....
rpledge··on PG about to speak at Facebook, partnership announcement to follow
Meh, personally I dislike the idea of building a business on top of someone else's platform. Facebook/Twitter/etc are good ways to reach out to people and spread your message, but it's too easy for them to block you or reimplement your idea.
rpledge··on Gabriel (yegg) will be on TWiT tonight @5pm EST talking about DuckDuckGo
That's a specific episode, read the banner

rpledge··on Why They Were Able To Raise Money
I agree. It's fun to play with at first, but besides looking cool, it doesn't help with navigation at all. I would be interested to know if they are seeing a drop off in traffic yet. Besides, they'll likely get smacked down hard for scraping content. They did a great job getting press for launch (I wonder how much they paid Scoble?) but I can't see them returning that $10 million unless someone acquires them.
rpledge··on Burning man defeats PayPal
Opencamp had similar issues, which only got resolved under public pressure http://openca.mp/blog/the-paypal-and-opencamp-resolution/
rpledge··on Ask HN: What smartphone to get right now?
What do you use to put music and movies on?
rpledge··on Ask HN: What smartphone to get right now?
If rumours are true, there should be some iTunes cloud support soon.

Software upgrades require iTunes, but I guess as long as you have access to an iTunes equipped box sometimes. As you point out, if you're dependant on adding Music and Movies frequently it would become a pain in the ass.

rpledge··on Ask HN: What smartphone to get right now?
If he's running Linux I'd be hesitant to recommend an iPhone 4, but I've never tried. I suspect lack of iTunes would be annoying. Is there a good iTunes substitute on Linux now?
rpledge··on Augen's Kmart tablet and smartbook won't have Google-branded apps from now on
I hadn't realized that Googles Apps weren't open source. This surprises me a bit, given Googles general attitude of open sourcing what it creates....
rpledge··on Conrad Black: My prison education
I can guarantee that there isn't a person in Canada that reads the National Post that doesn't know who Conrad Black is. I actually appreciate that they didn't waste my time with any backstory. I think in this day and age people can google shit if they want backstory.
rpledge··on Ask HN: Recommend me a Podcast
Well said. If you listen to No Agenda you quickly start to realize that mainstream media is a huge waste of time and completely controlled by corporations.

Adam may have some crazy theories, but a lot of what they talk about is the truth.

You don't have to agree with everything they say. In fact, if you only listen to opinions that you agree with, why bother listening to anything?

rpledge··on U.S. Copyright Group ‘Steal’ Competitor’s Website
I think you're being naive, not that they can extract money from you, but that you value your time so little. Imagine the pain in the ass a lawsuit would be.

I know this is part of the strategy of "Big Media", but the real solution is for the content producers to self publish (since the middle man takes too much of a cut and isn't providing the value they used to (i.e. trucking your CD to the store))

However, this doesn't justify that the content producer doesn't get paid if you pirate shit. In the long run I expect prices to drip and content producers to increase profits, but that's still a few years away.

rpledge··on U.S. Copyright Group ‘Steal’ Competitor’s Website
You mean IP addresses of people downloading torrents? It's peer to peer man, if I start to DL the torrent I'll make a connection to you (assuming you set up your client to accept) and I'll see that you're sharing the data.

The "hacked wireless modem" (the term by the way makes me assume you're not hardcore) defence is good, but they don't care about that. By the time you hire a lawyer and get your shit together they'll have met their goal: stopping you from pirating their IP.

rpledge··on Ask HN: New VC Event in Canada
Glad to see someone trying to help Canadian funding efforts.

Your about page is pretty weak on actual information about who's organizing this (i.e. you) and your background. I'd love to see those details.

No harsh criticism intended, but at the moment it kind of comes off as: I've rented a conference room, but I still need people to pitch AND people to invest in those pitches. Some indication that you've got some connection to one of those 2 groups would be encouraging.

I've bookmarked the site though, I'll keep my eye on it.

rpledge··on Why the Mythbusters won't do RFID (2008)
This was discussed on No Agenda recently as an example of why corporate advertising is bad for media that does this kind of work (although Mythbusters rarely broaches subjects that run against corporate culture).

It seems odd Adam would have made up his original account, but only he knows the real story at this point.

rpledge··on Recruiters can't tell great programmers and flakes apart [comic]
In my experience recuiters are used to staff long term positions. If a hiring company is looking to hire someone for a position that will take many months to learn an existing code base it is reasonable to expect that person stay with the company for some multiple of that amount of time.

That said, recruiters should ask potential candidates about their work preference. If the person is open to a long term placement they shouldn't dismiss them based on previous short term engagements. But don't get upset if "Large Corporation A" isn't interested in you because you like to do 3 month freelance projects.

Oh, I'm sorry, I see the error of my ways...

Hey everyone on Hacker News, please ask schammy before up voting any story so that nothing he isn't interested in doesn't make it to the front page!

Seriously, if you only read the top 10 stories you're missing the best stuff on this site. Try not to only read popular opinion, most people are sheep

rpledge··on Apple Obliterates Q3 Earnings Estimates: Best Mac Sales Ever, Huge iPad Numbers
You're still not getting it (or more likely being intentionally obtuse). Corporate results matter: remember the hype around the Palm Pre? If you dropped your iPhone development or even moved resources to build a Pre version of your software you made a mistake. The fact the this is on the front page is relevant to people that making strategic decisions based on market leaders.

Interestingly this site has a great feature that allows you to ignore things you believe are irrelevant: if you don't click the link you don't need to read it.

rpledge··on Apple Obliterates Q3 Earnings Estimates: Best Mac Sales Ever, Huge iPad Numbers
That's more of an unfortunate thing on your part, IMO. I take this from it personally:

- Mobile is still growing like crazy

- People are willing to pay a premium for quality even in tougher economic times

- Digital distribution of Music and Software is the future (I left out movies here because Apple doesn't give a detailed breakdown, but I think this is a significant part of the iTunes revenue as well)

Information exists everywhere, the truly successful are those that can extract it.
