rpledge··on UK backing down on Apple encryption backdoor after pressure from US
East Germany fell in 1990 - I doubt there were even 12,000 people online in East Germany at that point in time.
rpledge··on Hardware microphone disconnect (2021)
Apples clamshell mode support is super confusing IMHO. This is once thing Windows does better at least by default. Perhaps Macs can be configured to what I expect but I personally have struggled with getting it to work in a way that satisfies me.
rpledge··on NASA predicts asteroid to make one of closest approaches to Earth ever recorded
There's no way you saw any impact craters on an asteroid naked eye. You have a false memory
rpledge··on Roof blows off new Tesla Model Y
There really isn't a competitor to the Wrangler if you're into offroading. Sure pickup trucks compete but the size of a Wrangler + the massive aftermarket support make it hard to beat. The new Bronco might eat some of the market but time will tell.
rpledge··on Ask HN: Best office chair for home office work?
I have a DX racer that I use when I work from home. I've been satisfied with it
rpledge··on Txqr: Transfer data via animated QR codes
Cool - I did something similar long ago although I don't maintain it anymore. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/qrsplice/id513008119?mt=8
rpledge··on Transparent ceramics made with aluminum
I think transparent aluminum foil would be awesome - I could tell if my potatoes are cooked on the BBQ without opening the packet.
rpledge··on John Glenn has died
Godspeed, John Glenn....
rpledge··on Discovery of 1,000-year-old Viking site in Canada could rewrite history
It would be diffuclt to test as the Beothuk (the native people who lived on Newfoundland) sadly have been extinct for a while. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beothuk
rpledge··on Ask HN: Is it possible to find remote job on C/C++?
Interesting looking product - Not really obvious that you entertain remote workers from your website however, you may want to specifically state that.

(Offtopic - do you support non Intel platforms?)

rpledge··on Top curling teams say they won't use high-tech brooms
My point about drawing a line is that it needs to be defined (i.e. you can't use a broom with coefficient of friction greater than X (for example, I claim not scientific basis on this)). Having top teams indicate they don't like a change is a good signal to the governing body that sets rules but other teams will use the technology if it is better.

They can't just add a rule that says you can't use Brand X equipment - it has to declare limits on what the equipment is.

rpledge··on Top curling teams say they won't use high-tech brooms
So they're going to go back to corn husk brooms? Where do they draw the line?
rpledge··on AOL To Lay Off 150 People, Mostly In Sales; Folding Joystiq, TUAW Into Engadget
Sad - no more WoW Insider either. I hope some of the niche blogs reemerge as independent sites.

rpledge··on Designing a 68K Single Board Computer
Missed that - very cool, I hadn't heard of that project.
rpledge··on Designing a 68K Single Board Computer
I'm afraid the lack of an MMU will make running Linux impossible unless things in the kernel have changed dramatically since last looked into this.
rpledge··on What's CoreOS? An existential threat to Linux vendors – InfoWorld
Not sure I want to develop on an OS that automatically applies updates - keeping a stable environment is important. I would fear that some dependency could change and break what I'm working on without notice.
rpledge··on Teen Arrested for 30+ Swattings, Bomb Threats
It's interesting to see him named in the article - since he is under 18 in Canada he will be protected by the young offenders act and cannot be identified in the media. I suppose that is only applicable for Canadian media outlets.
rpledge··on Larry Page: I’d Rather Leave My Billions to Elon Musk Than to Charity
Hmmm, Larry better think twice about updating the firmware in his Tesla now. Suddenly his brakes don't work very well...

:)

rpledge··on Why air travel hasn't gotten any faster since the 1960s
If you're flying from a Canadian airport to the US (from Ottawa or Toronto at least) you actually clear US customs while still in Canada. This is actually very convenient as before they started this clearing customs in the US would involve a long line if many fights were arriving at the same time.
rpledge··on AMD reveals its first ARM processor: 8-core Opteron A1100
These aren't unusual features in SoCs. Of course if you're concerned about backdoors you don't have to invoke these engines, at least with a software implementation you can control the implementation.
rpledge··on Mac Pro Colocation
I'd be curious to see how they're dealing with rack mounting these. I have a vision that looks like a wine rack.....
rpledge··on Show HN: How much can you tell about someone from their tweets?
Got my gender wrong - which seems strange as my interests were all typically male (science/tech/sports)... Not being sexist here, it would be interesting if it would list tweets for each category with a weight but maybe that would give away their algorithm
rpledge··on Cue Acquired For Over $40M, Likely By Apple To Compete With Google Now
Clearly naming your startup after an Apple SVP is a good idea. I'd like to introduce my next startup - Schiller

I kid - congrats to the Cue folks

rpledge··on SQRL - Replacement for usernames and passwords
This is very similar to my project at http://qrauth.com
rpledge··on Dropbox opening my docs?
Or worse, if as other threads are speculating, libreoffice is being used to generate previews of the docs then an exploit in libreoffice could be used to get access to dropbox's backend
rpledge··on Comments in JSON
SHOULD is a horrible word to put in any spec if it doesn't specify what the result will be if that recommendation is violated
rpledge··on BufferBloat: What's Wrong with the Internet? (2011)
Steve Gibson did a great job explaining this last year on his podcast http://twit.tv/show/security-now/345
rpledge··on [dead]
I was going to downvote you, but after looking at the submitters bio and submission history I decided to upvote
rpledge··on Supreme Court: Natural Isolated DNA Not Patentable, Synthetic DNA Is [pdf]
I think you would find a lot of competition that would be willing to provide the required service at zero cost.
rpledge··on Use Google Authenticator For Two-Factor SSH Authentication in Linux
Anyone happen to know what lib is used to generate the QRCode in the terminal?
