If you aren't mentally or physically unable to do something (which is the case in a small percentage of the population), you shouldn't be poor. There are many opportunities in the US. I've been poor, had many poor friends, and now I'm doing much better.
Poor, many times, can be changed, but people aren't willing to change their lifestyles.
Many people have free time after work (if you aren't working, you have even more free time). I chose to learn a skill during that time. Many of my friends, who still aren't going anywhere in life, chose to drink, have fun, and party with their friends. I sacrificed that time (for awhile at least) for my career.
Many people also don't understand delayed gratification. They need to have everything now and as a result, suffer financially.
"least middle class so they would have better social connections later in life"
When you have more money, it becomes difficult to stay friends with people that are consistently poor. Many times because your problems, outlook on life, and hobbies change.
It may have been a problem because your ex-employer disputed it.
Allowed? I suppose you mean we didn't tax them at 90% to "redistribute" it.
"the loudest complaints about "socialists" and "redistribution" seem to come from people who need it the most, but don't recognize it."
Or the people that have nothing and would rather have the government give it to them than try and earn it themselves. We do need some social nets, but if those social nets are too large, we create a system of people that feel entitled propped up by the people that are actually working. When that system starts to collapse, there are riots in the streets because there are too many people relying on it.
"The American public, IMO, needn't look much further than a mirror to see the cause of their woes."
There are many countries in Europe that are struggling just as hard (if not harder) than the US. They had all of these social nets that you speak of. What happened?
If you can get a show in HD quality, very fast, without commercials, and at no cost..nothing will compete with it that costs money.
Content producers shouldn't have to consider pirates the competition.
At this rate, the answer will be a forced monthly fee/tax through all of the major Internet providers.
The guy also told me they have only ever had 1 in stock.
It's funny how a group that claims to be so good..is nothing but evil. This is why I can no longer support them.
This is one of the reasons I hate working for other people. If I'm going to be wasting my youth away for something, I'm going to be getting all or the majority of the profits.
Are they factoring in all of the people that aren't rich that want to raise taxes exponentially on the wealthy? How about the people using our welfare systems that could easily go out and get a job?
The wealthy already pay a ton in taxes. Some may have less empathy, but I just don't buy that overall, they are less empathetic.
"They think that economic success and political outcomes, and personal outcomes, have to do with individual behavior, a good work ethic"
This is a slap in the face to everyone that does work hard and is successful.
I stopped reading here.
I agree with you here. I also find that the jerks, may seemingly be intelligent, but don't learn much from other people (which usually happens if you are smart+socially aware) because they think are right all the time
oh and btw, my point has pretty much been proven.
Even 8 years go it was bad. I worked downtown and could regularly hear gunshots from my office during the day.
My favorite is when they offer me $50 for a link on my blog for the lifetime of my site. That's right, not annually, for life. A couple of times I made a counter offer of $100/year and I got a pissed off response in the form of me trying to "rip them off".
I suppose it's fine when many of then newer programmers don't even know or understand what's going on underneath anyway...
Are we also not allowed to talk about RoR when it comes to a discussion about PHP alternatives?
If you are under thirty and single, you can get health care for $200 or less per month, which is pretty affordable. There are also group plans for small business owners.
