rexf··on I'm a scam prevention expert and I got scammed
The setup flow is hit or miss.

With some banks, it was seamless to setup. With another bank, it wasn't clear how to finish setting up Apple Pay. I don't recall if I called them or went through their app to actually set it up. It was definitely confusing, and the Apple Pay onboarding screens didn't provide useful instructions.

rexf··on We can do better than “same, but electric”
Having an ecosystem of batteries + tools is great. The question is which of the endless ecosystem options (ryobi, dewalt, milwaukee, bosch, etc.) to pick
rexf··on 5G Skeptic
Carriers & phone makers need something to talk about for marketing. The iPhone 12 was unremarkable, so they had to lean on 5G as a reason to upgrade. 5G in my experience (latest iPhone 13 Pro on one of the largest US carriers) is broken/underwhelming, so I've turned it off.

I agree that there is a lot of bikeshedding regarding 5G and countless other topics (microservices vs monolith, electron vs native, etc). There are lots of topics that drive heavy user engagement while never answering an actual question.

rexf··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
That's a good point, but 12:40am is a very unusual flight time? That's almost 1am.

I would guess most flights are in the ballpark of 7am - 9pm. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

rexf··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
12a vs 12p is pretty confusing. Appending noon or midnight is super helpful in calendar apps. E.g., "12p (noon)" or "12a (midnight)"

Self plug: I built a super simple visualization page to help figure out which is which https://xta.github.io/am-pm-visualized/

rexf··on Travel photos are underrated (2019)
Yeah, these X years ago photo memories are cool.

When I use my DSLR, I try to take a lot of photos with the intention of picking a few good ones later. These sit in storage and I usually don't see them again. As you said, it's a "zillion photos" of subject X.

When I use my phone, I generally try to take a photo here and there. But I don't need to take as many photos (vs DSLR mode).

What is a slog is when I try to take a "zillion photos" of something with my phone. It really adds noise pollution to my phone's photo album. Also, I don't like having a bunch of iPhone Burst mode photos. It really takes makes looking through my photos cumbersome and picking the "best" one to keep is a chore that nobody wants to do.

rexf··on Ask HN: Has anyone else gotten the 'Turning Red' ad after Firefox update?
This may have been more useful as a poll https://news.ycombinator.com/newpoll

As a FF desktop user, I honestly have not seen any full page ads for Turning Red. Haven't noticed full page ads for anything (yet) to be honest.

rexf··on iPhone 11 Emulated on QEMU
Two factor is a challenge with development (for IAP sandbox) accounts. I have to be careful to constantly not turn on two factor for test accounts. The iPhone will keep prompting me to opt-in, but I don't have several spare phone numbers or '2nd Apple' trusted devices for 2FA.

Apple's 2FA details: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/manage-factor-authent...

While I support 2FA usage, I wish there was a way to say 'I understand the risks and do not want 2FA on this account'.

rexf··on What is the purpose of check-in before flying? (2014)
What is the precheck card?

From my anecdotal experience, your boarding pass may have TSA precheck mark. This has been sufficient for me to go into the TSA precheck line (vs regular default line).

Also, I usually see a person at the precheck line entrance screening people for boarding passes with the precheck mark. Otherwise they will direct you to the regular line.

rexf··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
They are an indirect promotional arm. YT phone "reviews" are as useful as a video game "review". They are well-timed promotional content, and they generally can't say anything truly bad or else they jeopardize early access to demo units.
rexf··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
Over time, Apple got strict about replacing their Lightning charging cable and wired EarPods (headphones). They would regularly wear out for me.

In earlier iPhone generations, they would replace your EarPod headphones without a hassle (or wait). Later on (as Apple got more popular and Apple store genius bar lines grew longer), you had to make a reservation and they would only consider replacing it after checking the cable's (discrete) serial number.

rexf··on Hyperloop lays off half of its employees as it pivots away from passenger travel
> pivot from passenger transport to freight

This isn't about passenger transport anymore

rexf··on Google Search Is Dying
Too bad wirecutter is very hit or miss. I have definitely bought their recommendations and regretted it.

Searching for query + reddit is an OK means of looking for recommendations

What would be nice is a store (like amazon or target) that only sold reputable items. I'm not looking for 3rd party marketplace (like walmart or amazon offers). Maybe costco (brick & mortar) offers this curated selection, but even costco's products are hit or miss.

rexf··on Developing a new app is unreasonable condition that Apple imposes on dating apps
While Apple's sign on sounds good on the surface, the reality is more user confusion.

For each app, you have a new button to consider / remember which one you used:

* Login with email

* Login with Google

* Login with Facebook

* Login with Apple

rexf··on Do things, tell people (2012)
Making (software) stuff seems easy. I do post about it on social media, but honestly it gets 0 traction since I have almost no audience.

> If you you don't have any marketable skills, learn some.

This seems like "rest of the owl" where it leaves out a ton of critical steps. Become good at marketing is a lucrative career if you are good at it. So excuse me for being jaded when "learn marketing" seems as helpful to me as "sell profitable services". Sure, but how?

The post recommends Khan Academy, Wikipedia, and Code Academy. Only Wikipedia has info on marketing, but reading it is not the same as learning how to do marketing.

rexf··on DarkPattern.games: Find Healthy Mobile Games
Free + No IAP sounds great for users, but it's completely unsustainable for developers. So don't expect any major updates over time.
rexf··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Yeah, however real estate agents will close later (and for more) when selling their own home.

rexf··on The case against masks at school
Yeah. I have to assume user ngngngng is exaggerating to make a statement.

I've flown in the past year and was annoyed that adult passengers in front of me weren't wearing their mask (or wearing it with their nose exposed). While the flight attendant told them a few times times to put their mask on correctly, the flight attendants were not going to "turn the plane around and ban [them] permanently".

rexf··on Tell HN: A Conversation Needs to Be Had over Subscription Software
As a consumer, do you need to participate in these transactions?

I bought MS Office (non-subscription) and honestly Google Docs/Sheets (free tier) works for most of my needs.

While Apple wants to push subscription apps, you don't need to subscribe to them. I don't. If the value is there, sure subscribe to them.

Apple is pretty in your face with selling their services. I get nagware iCloud storage limit subscription notifications that I can't dismiss. They are pushing for Arcade, TV+, Music, etc. sign -ups in their OS settings. I haven't paid for them and don't intend to.

Just because these paid subscriptions exist does not mean they are entitled to your money every month.

rexf··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
This is an extremely poor comment.

How does not wanting a child to get an infectious disease get extrapolated to never going near a car? They are not comparable at all.

Also OP is not asking you to stay home. They are merely concerned about minimizing harm to their child (as parents do) and hoping the <5 y.o. vax approval comes sooner than later.

rexf··on Companies that had successful pivots
That's a good point. I thought pivot meant "switching from a unprofitable or failed business idea to a profitable one".

In that sense, IIRC Netflix's founder had the early vision to offer streaming services (one day in the future), so it wasn't a pivot. It was part of the plan.

I mean he named his company "Netflix". Does that sound like DVD delivery? No, it sounds like inter(net) + flicks.

rexf··on Public Staircases
The stairs as better benches comparison is great.

It also mentions the [Los Angeles Loop](https://socalstairclimbers.com/los-angeles-loop/) which I had never heard of. Interesting post

rexf··on DJI Mavic 3 Drone
Agreed, the technology is really impressive, but it makes no sense to own (in Los Angeles) since it's heavily restricted for hobbyists.

(Kind in mind I support safe flying and I'm not advocating for the wild west.)

rexf··on Man spent $150 eating every meal at Six Flags since 2014 to pay off student debt
yes, Amazon doesn't have the cheapest prices. Their (Prime) shipping is generally the fastest
rexf··on Jetson One – Personal Electric Aerial Vehicle
> A complete vehicle is 92 000 USD and is delivered to you as a partially (50%) assembled kit for home completion. It contains everything you need, from the aluminium space frame to motor controllers, propellers and motors. You will also receive detailed build instructions.

Seems odd to not deliver a fully assembled aircraft. Is there any regulatory reason? If cost is an issue, they could probably charge extra (such as $110K total) and deliver it fully assembled.

rexf··on Apple 'Surprised' by Developer Frustration with Its App Review Process
Similar comment from Panic (major independent mac app developer):

> ... the App Store takes parts of our job that we're already extremely good at like customer support, quick updates, easy refunds and makes them all more stressful and difficult, in exchange for giving Apple 30% of our revenue.

rexf··on Apple requires account deletion within apps in AppStore starting January 31
I'd question if their policies benefit consumers overall.

In theory Apple sign-in is great. In reality, many apps now show several login options (Google, FB, Apple, e-mail) and I can't remember which one I used.

I've had many instances of trying to login with Apple, the app silently throws an error, and the app won't proceed. E-mail pw reset doesn't work. Did I use Apple Sign-In with my real e-mail or a forwarded (private) e-mail? Apple has made logins more complex and confusing.

rexf··on The Making of Donkey Kong 64 (2019)
I prefer SNES DKC series over DK64. Speaking as someone that picked up the green DK64 N64 set.

DKC is great 2D platforming. DK64 was comprised of random minigames and unfortunately was not anywhere near the greatness of other 3D platforming games (Super Mario 64). If I wanted minigames, I'd play N64 Mario Party.

I built a similar Mac app that removes common trackers from clipboard links. It works on your iPhone with Apple's Universal Clipboard.
