ramshanker··on Chinese researchers planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
Now that Cerebrus has proven it works, I would love to have an x86 / ARM / NVidia do this. And for best results, onboard one of the memory maker as well. Cerebrus seems to have underestimated memory requirement of LLM. So imagine, 16 H200 GPU along with single digit TB HBM memory stitched together on a single substrate wafer. It seems doable with correct technology.

Go for it China. You are in good track here.

ramshanker··on Amazon plans to charge for Alexa in June–unless internal conflict delays revamp
Unless it is complimentary with prime, I am not adding one more SUBSCRIPTION to my life.
ramshanker··on Memory leak proof every C program
Not calling free can bite in short running programs also if memory allocation is done in a loop.
ramshanker··on TSMC 2nm Update: Two Fabs in Construction, One Awaiting Government Approval
I am surprised with the absence of Cerebrus style x64 or ARM or NVDA GPU chips on the leading nodes.
ramshanker··on [dead]
Once we have established with high confidence that other planets don’t have native life, We can start looking for life forms which can survive natural environment. Imagine we seed Venus with life. ;)
ramshanker··on Apple is officially no longer selling the newest Apple Watch in America
I have been doing the thought experiment about fair pricing of patents. My current values are like:

A patent holder declares the value he is willing to license the patent to any entity. Inventor can consider their EXPANSES while declaring the value, but not the approach “my idea cost me 0$ but is worth a billion “. Society should be willing to compensate for monetary investment, not just imagination. You deposit 1% of the declared value annually to maintain the patent. This one to discourage arbitrary value declaration. Any company wishing to license, pays you the declared amount. If 10 companies pay you declared value, I.e You have earned 10x return on your actual expense of innovation, patent becomes public domain. Society doesn’t need per product patent pricing sh*.

The numbers , 1% and 10x can always be debated. Overall seems good enough to encourage innovation and discourage trolling.

ramshanker··on Run 70B LLM Inference on a Single 4GB GPU with This New Technique
I read the whole article but did not find the words / token per second number?
ramshanker··on Linux being secure is a common misconception
“I am secure”, ohh well “Xyz is secure”, is a common misconception. Anyone remember the old saying “ given enough time and tools, all locks are broken”.
ramshanker··on The laptop that won't die
I am in the same boat.

Lenovo Z50-70 bought 2015. 8 GB RAM upgraded to 16 GB recently. It has got 4GB Nvidia graphics, does mild AI stuff as well. Hard Disc replaced with Samsung SSD few years back. Full HD screen. I even bought a 4K-27 inch monitor to connect to it last week. Thought it struggles to play beyond 1440p. Win10 works and is totally responsive. I hope it keeps going for 3 more years. :)

ramshanker··on AWS to start charging for IPv4 usage, but critical services don't support IPv6
One day will come, when network admins will be so happy to finally turn off IPv4 on their stack. When router manufacturers will feel happy to support only IPv6. It is definitely coming within my lifetime.

So, these intermediate steps are just cooking the final dish.

Peace. ;)

ramshanker··on Sometimes, it is a compiler bug (2022)
It’s a dark art.

Or that old saying….

Any science well done, is as good as magic.

ramshanker··on The Xiaomi 14 with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has a 32 to 64-bit translator
I guess Google play store can restrict the downloadable set of apps to what is natively compiled for available hardware.

So why this over-the-top feature than?

ramshanker··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
My solution: I set all CCs to generate bill on 1st/2nd. Immediately after receiving salary at month end. Than pay them all manually in one go 3rd to 5th. Very less overhead /head scratching.
ramshanker··on I downgraded to an iPhone 11 Pro Max – and there’s not much I’m missing
My iPhone 6s is still working fine after 7th year birthday. It had under warranty battery + screen replacement at the end of 2nd Year, followed by a battery swap at 4th year. Around 2% pixels are dead, but the phone still works as expected. It has 4G, so data speed is also not an issue. No lag whatsoever. All my apps continue to work. I have come across only ONE generative-image app, which failed to install claiming need iOS 16+.

Now I am actively waiting for this hardware to FAIL so I can justify myself buying a latest model. :)

ramshanker··on Unreal Engine 5.3
It is for us, Civil Engineers and many other non-cs Engineering Fields.
ramshanker··on China Bans iPhone Use for Government Officials at Work
Since when stocks.apple.com redirects to Wall Street Journal?
ramshanker··on I’ll never be an astronaut
This post is inspiring me to take care of my health better than my current life style.
ramshanker··on Amazon is getting ready to launch a lot of broadband satellites
Any space program which involves a new Rocket is essentially a Rocket program.

- Someone at NASA.

ramshanker··on IPv6 Deployment Status
All we need is ONE major website to declare 24 Hour brown-out for IPv4 and put a message something like "Contact your ISP to upgrade your connection".

Alas, publicly traded companies....

ramshanker··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
Sometimes, I wonder what if someone in XYZ country downloads whole of Z-Library/Libgen, all the books ever printed, and all the papers ever published, all the newspapers and so on. and releases the model open source. There are jurisdictions with Lax rules.

And they will have much better knowledge, answers, etc than the western, Lawyer approved models.

Sometimes knowledge needs to be set free I guess.

ramshanker··on RISC-V Assembly Programming
Aren't we all waiting for that ONE Intel/AMD level competitive RISC-V processor. With full PCIe Lanes, Memory Controllers, integrated Graphics and so on....
ramshanker··on Android Games on PC
System Requirements: Hardware virtualization must be turned on.

Now that is one ODD of a system requirement.

ramshanker··on Ask HN: Why is there no major push towards Android for Servers and Desktops?
Yes. I am in the support-snap-flatpack camp, and was really surprised by HN hatred towards it.
ramshanker··on A modern and open-source cross-platform software for chips reverse engineering
Sometime I wonder, why Open Source has not flourished to SOTA in Chip Design. 5nm and beyond chips quote 40% as software cost out of a Billion $ cost to design the chip. That is a too large amount to attract somebody interested in open source.
ramshanker··on The Deep Sea (2019)
If life could exist 10km below the ocean, I have strong gut feeling, we will find life deep inside the Jupiter thick atmosphere. Whatever depth that may be. It is like there is a FISH WITH WORKING EYE at 10km depth, so for much simplified multicellular organisms, limit could be even more extreme.
ramshanker··on So you want to write a GUI framework (2021)
Thankyou. I am starting an experimental desktop application myself and currently at library selection phase. This is going to help few decisions.
ramshanker··on Jim Keller on AI, RISC-V, Tenstorrent’s Move to Edge IP
I watched the video, apparently they are targeting $1000-$2000, and said even $500 sounds interesting.

Maybe, just maybe a highly cut down version, 15 watt model could bring it down to RaspberryPi level price. $45. UsbC interface, if not x4 PCIe. Like, people buy it first, and decide what to do with it latter on. Guess I am going to far down the fantasy lane. ;)

ramshanker··on Jim Keller on AI, RISC-V, Tenstorrent’s Move to Edge IP
Still awaiting the retail release of that 75w PCIe card with out-of-box PyTorch support. If it can run, say StableDiffusion / LAAMA and family, many more use cases shall emerge.

Obviously retail price will have to be competitive with Gaming Cards.

My 2 cents.

ramshanker··on Response to “Developers are lazy, thus Flatpak”
Games these days are easily 100GB alone. So 37GB is still well within current hardware capabilities.
ramshanker··on Leaked source – CS:GO
That will be helpful with my open source projects. Thanks.
