qikInNdOutReply··on Why do prime numbers make these spirals? (2019)
Its the dimensionality? 2nd dimension, 3rd dimension and there permutation shadows? So by the mathematical principal, there is only one interesting permutation, and thats the "natural" one within the first dimension, aka 1 and 2s.

Do they have relatives in the mainland?
qikInNdOutReply··on Tech bosses are letting dictators censor what Americans see
Eh, they? Have you talked to them? They hate it.. every second of it. In the words of someone i knew there "It sucks, we are treated like children."

If they had a choice, the party would hang in rank and file from the street laternposts.

qikInNdOutReply··on Tech bosses are letting dictators censor what Americans see
Those double standards are pretty funny. Compare western musk https://twitter.com/elonmusk to the weibo version (use VPN) https://weibo.com/elonmusk

Behind language and technical barriers you can create pretty divergent versions of yourselfs.

qikInNdOutReply··on AI is taking the jobs of Kenyans who write essays for U.S. college students
Well, they obviously did not work hard to get reincarnated in the us and preach to the rest of the world in lenghty articles about how to work hard, articles written by kenyans most likely.

Sarcasmsnake eats its tail, to big to fail..

qikInNdOutReply··on US to start training Ukrainian troops on Abrams tanks within weeks
This. We got to high on our own history lessons learned medicine in the west. Thinking that anybody shared that sentiment.

For all those other regions on the planet, the Great game never ended and is in full swing ever after. For them the WorldWars were a colonial power internal affair, and now its "our turn to become the king of the hill of skulls". The history and injustices of 2 worldwars is just a justification to go into battle for them.

Its bleak, but our reality altering screams never penetrated that mindset.

qikInNdOutReply··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
Wrap the combustion engine with a heatpump to a small steam engine?
qikInNdOutReply··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
So, how about we apologize in public to the engineers who said no to radar, cause boy oh boy would that one have eaten battery, which would need additional batteries, which would have torrn into the car rocket equation ?
qikInNdOutReply··on Developers should be force-fed state machines (2011)
Which still is by all means a externalized watchdog, which in addition is deactivated, if its not properly implemented and still working. So the philosophy itself is brokken by the programers and the users are used as sensor to find out wether the program executed properly.

A proper implementation would be, that windows for example during the installation could "starve" the process in a API or somewhere else into a internal timeout and expect that error to come up, to proof worthiness.

qikInNdOutReply··on Mullvad VPN was subject to a search warrant – customer data not compromised
Its funny, how the VPN providers basically become the avatars of the old anarchic web and the constant buisness and government overreach makes them ever stronger. Its basically a old "freedom" tax.
qikInNdOutReply··on Developers should be force-fed state machines (2011)
Im confused. We argue for the same point. The program must know. And it can know. It can perform regular check ins and the watchdog in the program internals should reset it properly out of an error state. With an error message and the ability to save previously done work.

I totally agree with you. Its very strange that the Operating System has to do basic controll flow jobs, as in Windows with the basic regular check ins by programs with the os. It should be part of every executable.

qikInNdOutReply··on Developers should be force-fed state machines (2011)
How do you check, that your state-machine is not stuck. Its still shocking how much software can "hang", as if there is no way to detect that and reset to a "controllable" state via watchdog and error message. Its a disgrace, that such software engineering basic functionality has to be performed by the operating system.
qikInNdOutReply··on Physicists discover that gravity can create light
So the trick to creat this light in todays environment would be to make a gravity amplifying device similiar to a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_laser and overlay the amplitudes? That can be easy. Just have a microscopic black hole particle go back and forth in a field..
qikInNdOutReply··on Building telescopes on the Moon could transform astronomy
CERN is all about breaking stuff into smallest bits and find out what makes it up, before it returns to the foam. Its basically a particle car crash factory, who tries to learn how a car works by watching millions of crash tests for outliers. And in a way it works..

The problem is to deduct second order laws and rules behind the observed bits and screws flying. Car factories, assembly lines and cnc machines..

By use of horrible metaphors, we summone the oh might particle physicists into the cycle of cyclotron..

PS: Material science wouldnt know what it would get away with outside of try and error - without particle physics..

qikInNdOutReply··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
It also assumes that quality can not be archieved with chat gpt via quantity. Like "Make me 20 webpages with this topic", then let them test & evaluate by amazon clickwork, then regenerate with the base of the best 3 till quality goal is reached.
qikInNdOutReply··on Gezellig – a word that encompasses the heart of Dutch Culture
Gesselig in german is a word for "company loving/loving it lively" and gemuetlich is a word for "homely/cozy".

Its a funny case of words shifting meaning, while still sounding similar.

qikInNdOutReply··on Why some researchers think I’m wrong about social media and mental illness
I label the rightwing anti-migration parties as actually "anti"-climatechange-sideffects.

They are just more willing to invest ton of money in fighting symptoms, as the anti-neighbour tribal mindset is so hardwired.

Shame its never enough to really get to the roots of the problem. Would be fascinating to see the tea party turn on Big Oil because they caused this mess.

qikInNdOutReply··on Why some researchers think I’m wrong about social media and mental illness
The whole activism thing doesent do a lot anymore, since the social plaza belongs to cooperate and the state, and activism was shown to be easy exhaustable compared to the endurance of lobbyism aka cooperate activism. Future frustrated voices will turn straight to violence and skip this unproducitve state of affairs.
qikInNdOutReply··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
That can be migated. Just make a pre-negotiation round, were post vote, those parties who are below n% can give there vote share to the parties who make it over the limit, for a negotiated "goals" contract. No vote is lost..

It forces fringe, extremist and "eternal" oppossition parties to compromise and negotiate better terms and it can change elections that are really close.

qikInNdOutReply··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
I think valve did there part to remove one large reason to stay on windows.

I think if steam decks gets a good linux desktop, similar to windows in look and feel, that can be run on a desktop, parallel to windows. Its over, very suddenly, very brutal.

And here it is: https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/download?ver=steamdec...

A challenger appears. He is unburdened by the need to advertise. Its super effective.

qikInNdOutReply··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
Just say no to Nestle. Cook your own food! Same goes for piracy, if they feel violated by me not being customer, dont go to the government and its laws as company. Just try to exist without the could-be-customers. Boycott the pirates, by doing nothing.
qikInNdOutReply··on Ask HN: What would you recommend a 16 year old to pursue career wise?
I would stop to push specific careers. I would instead push mental tools that are career overlapping useful. The engineering mindset, to learn and adopt into a topic fast, recongize standardization patterns and be able to move within a uknown system is one such thing which is quite transferable.

Same goes for sozializing and organizing. The problem is though, that teaching such abstract tools, without a usecase tends to look pointless from a beginners perspective. Same way math looks pointless in school.

qikInNdOutReply··on Giant SpaceX Spiral Appears Amid the Aurora Lights in Alaska's Night Sky
Now, this is a mature reaction to calling out handing nukes to toddlers. Well at least you took it constructive, by turning the discussion towards the material science of toddlers and societies they form. That, right here, is why we cant have nice, but dangerous things.

And remember, you got time to build up momentum, a ion drive accelerating in a spiral with swingbys, with one final push, can get you pretty high on the C if you dont want it right now.

And i was not referencing the expanse. I was referencing todays solar driven ion engines. Boring tech. Marathon tech. But given enough time it can move a mountain up a notch, without drag.

qikInNdOutReply··on Giant SpaceX Spiral Appears Amid the Aurora Lights in Alaska's Night Sky
The problem is that planetary civilization is inherantly fragile to those living up outside the gravity well. Every depressed belter asteroid-trucker with a balistics computer, can throw a garbage can at earth or mars at speed and end planetary civilization.

qikInNdOutReply··on Facing brutal climate math, US bets billions on direct air capture
The tandem component for direct capture is a clean energy source ala fusion or a solar price drop to a price point on par. So it would make sense to make continued research depending on fusion break throughs.
qikInNdOutReply··on The Windows 11 Trash Party
Cause everyone already had learned how to "touch"-gui, but microsoft in typical arrogance, redesigned it from the bottom up, throwing all the learnings away, you either had from android or macos. And like introducing a third language, to do the same tasks you already can perform fluent in two other languages, it was just this constant stepping into the void of expectations. It came out 2012 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_(design_language) and was thus 9 years to late (1 iphone) and 5 years to late (1 android). It was moment were microsoft dediced to go uphill, that journey developers usually have to face, when dragging users away from windows (aka the universal gui). I mean, the normal user learns windows in school.

You only make that sort of learning effort on rare ocassions. And you dont make it just because your vendor locks you out of a previoulsy perfectly working for you ("You learned to know it blind") device.
