If we can get on the same page about relevant priors + the purpose of life, productive disagreements should be easy, right?

There’s so much pent up collaborative human energy trapped behind language barriers.

Beautiful articulation.

This is an enormous win for humanity.

purplerabbit··on America is in the midst of an extraordinary startup boom
Stealing and piracy are different

Stealing removes something — nothing is removed here

But maybe this semantic battle is lost because most people make this equivocation

(Not saying piracy is necessarily OK)

Our knowledge and ignorance are both astounding. But there's definitely more we don't know than that we know.

This method seems to work pretty well: https://www.philosophicaleconomics.com/2013/12/the-single-gr...

Unique in that it seems statistically verified. Here’s an up-to-date version of the projection: https://financial-charts.effingapp.com/

purplerabbit··on The virtuous mean between time drunkenness and work martyrdom
Your first question is a good one to which I don’t have an answer.

On the second: possibility applies at all levels of the hierarchy. Obtaining basic health increases possibility — it increases the ways you can navigate the world at a simple physical level, and “unlocks” The possibility of “higher levels” e.g. relationships, which unlock still higher levels of possibility.

purplerabbit··on The virtuous mean between time drunkenness and work martyrdom
I believe the purpose of life is to create possibility. If that’s true, there will never be an incentive to work less so long as there is more possibility to be created (assuming that people are living purposefully, and it seems to me that those that don’t are evolutionarily selected against)

purplerabbit··on Happy New Year HN!
Changed my life as well. Accelerated my assimilation of good software principles, management theory, business strategy, and salary negotiation. Accelerated my career by like 40%. And lots of entertainment along the way. Thanks HN!
purplerabbit··on 2023: Focusing on a single product pays off
If the purpose of life is any broader than “construct a beautiful fantasy world” then such an approach is a mistake
purplerabbit··on America lost the chestnut, its "perfect tree"
My review of Richard Powers: reading him is like reading a Yale-educated version of Nicholas Sparks.
purplerabbit··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
The LDS church has owned for-profit entities for decades. Check out the "City Creek Center.
purplerabbit··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
Not at this magnitude. If you read the latest Semianalysis article, Microsoft’s current infra project is the largest infra project currently being undertaken by humankind (not sure if that’s overstatement, but regardless, $50B largely and competently directed towards (Open)AI-supporting hardware isn’t something easily replicable)
purplerabbit··on In Switzerland, most people rent for life
How should the government decide which taxes to implement, then?
purplerabbit··on In Switzerland, most people rent for life
I think the solution to this is an incremental shift towards property taxes + away from income taxes. Doing so would nullify the investment arms race that’s turning home ownership into a sick financial game.

If you’re paying 6%/year in property taxes, a home is no longer an “investment”, and the house hoarding (especially by the likes of investors buying single-family housing) will cease. People will buy homes to have a place to live, and the market will cool off.

This comes with the additional benefit of progressively taxing wealth instead of solely income. Wealth discrepancy is orders of magnitude worse than income discrepancy, and currently we’re doing almost nothing about that.

purplerabbit··on The ascent of "guy" (1999)

purplerabbit··on Sugar Substitutes Surprise
Fascinating. It's like your body gradually figured out that you were trying to fool it, and revolted.

I'd bet there are digestion processes that "start up" in response to taste. Maybe your body detected that stevia was regularly "starting up" one of these processes and then withholding the expected glucose spike, and got upset about the pattern

purplerabbit··on Ford shuts down Argo, their $4B self-driving car effort
I've had this same thought many times, and I'm sure others here have as well.

Has anyone come across a serious study/proposal along these lines?

I'm curious whether this foretells any potential future change in strategy for e.g. Cruise/Waymo, which are similarly ultra-expensive.

What problems in particular have you run into? Genuinely curious.
purplerabbit··on From zero to 10M lines of Kotlin
Have you tried TypeScript? My impression having used it in both JetBrains and VSCode is that it achieves basically what you're describing.

I similarly get irritated using anything else now.
