purpleblue··on Nature retracts paper that claimed adult stem cell could become any type of cell
Does this mean that stem cells cannoot become any type of cell? Certainly this should have been easy to test over the last 22 years?
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Am I dead meat already?
I'm not sure what the job market is like in Europe, but in the US it's the worst job market I've seen since the dotcom bust. The job market isn't worse than the Dotcom bust but it's worse than the Financial crisis for sure. I wouldn't freak out just yet, however, I would also dedicate a lot more effort to learn whatever stack and language that is more popular in your area. Sticking with C and waiting for the right job to appear isn't a good idea. Also, there's no shame in lying on your resume to show some experience in whatever language you are looking to transition to, like golang. As long as you can walk the walk, ultimately that's all that matters.
purpleblue··on HP bricks customers laptops with faulty automatic BIOS upgrade
Carly Fiorina successfully and completely dismantled "The HP Way" which was the root of Silicon Valley. After her, HP was nothing but a carcass and filled with opportunistic people that destroyed the company. HP looks at their customers like an enemy.

Anyone who buys anything HP is intentionally making their lives miserable and they deserve it for not doing a modicum of research to avoid them.

purpleblue··on Are Unpaid Take-Home Interview Assignments Ethical?
No. Only if they are asking the candidates to do free work.
purpleblue··on Reddit is taking over Google
Another huge problem is the extreme left wing political bias almost everything has on the front page. I'm a centrist but the violently left views of everything on the front page is really offputting and I used to love reddit.
purpleblue··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
Are you really accusing the left-leaning American Bar Association of supporting Trump?
purpleblue··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
No, YOU are misrepresenting the Mueller findings. As per the American Bar Association:

The special counsel found that Russia did interfere with the election, but “did not find that the Trump campaign, or anyone associated with it, conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in these efforts, despite multiple efforts from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign.”

https://www.americanbar.org/news/abanews/aba-news-archives/2...

With respect to obstruction: As far as obstruction, the Mueller report laid out facts on both sides but did not reach a conclusion. Barr’s letter said that “the Special Counsel states that ‘while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.’”

purpleblue··on Replacing Wires Could Double How Much Electricity the US Grid Can Handle
Replacing the wires cost half as much as adding new wires. So I think it actually makes more sense to add new wires. It will give some level of redundancy for only double cost and you don't need to impact current electricity delivery.
purpleblue··on Apple explores home robotics as potential 'next big thing'
They should just fix Siri and iTunes. Siri is shockingly useless. If Siri were even a little more useful I would get a Home Pod but it's utterly useless for most things except setting timers and turning on lights.
purpleblue··on Andy Bechtolsheim charged with insider trading
Why didn't he get jail time like other insider traders?
purpleblue··on DBRX: A new open LLM
Aren't the Macs good for inference but not for training or fine tuning?
purpleblue··on How I build and run behavioral interviews
Any guide or blog post on how to interview that doesn't compare interview notes to performance reviews after hiring someone is basically bullshit.

Anyone can write a blog post about what they think is a good interview but there's no empirical proof that their interview technique works.

purpleblue··on High Interest Savings Leaderboard
T-bills have short duration so their inflationary risk is minimal.
purpleblue··on High Interest Savings Leaderboard
Credit cards are the best place for an emergency fund. You still all your cash in US-Treasuries, gaining 5+ % interest with no federal tax, and as secure as anything in the world. Then if an emergency comes up, use your credit cards, and you have 30 days to pull money out and pay for it, without losing any of your interest.
purpleblue··on Google cut a deal with Reddit for AI training data
It's interesting how you're creating an argument out of thin air.

The article was about mining comments for AI, not about advertisement. Yet you brought in the topic of advertisement, and then created a fake argument about how people think advertisers are better than AI scraping. It's really weird that you did that.

purpleblue··on Google cut a deal with Reddit for AI training data
Someone should create a bot that responds to highly upvoted comments and remind the redditor that Reddit is making money off the comment and the information is being used by AI and they aren't seeing a dime of it.
purpleblue··on YouTube addiction, one month sober
I deleted TikTok and Instagram, and my screen time dropped by 4 hours a day. That's 28 hours a week. I didn't realize how much time I spent on it, but it makes sense because I would watch it as soon as I woke up and before I went to sleep. I was gobsmacked at how much time I saved.

Now I spend all that time playing Baldur's Gate 3.

purpleblue··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
I thought I read that Signal has some funding by the US government. Was that not correct?
purpleblue··on The argument over a long-standing autism intervention
My friend's son, who is low-functioning, doesn't talk. He grunts. He is 11 and is a big child and has become increasingly violent. When he was smaller the violence was manageable, but he is over 100 lbs and strong. He sleeps about 3 hours a day, wakes up at 1am every night and screams at the top of his lungs until someone else wakes up.

There is no way he can function without ABA therapy which he has been doing since he was 5, because that's when the Canadian government started to cover part of the costs. My friends are close to poverty levels because ABA therapy is over $80,000 per year and he has to pay about half of those costs.

The idea that someone such as yourself, would come in and say that this kid is being "forced into a box" is so offensive, it's astonishing that someone could say that. Without ABA therapy he wouldn't be able to be brought outside in the world. My friend's greatest fear is that he and his wife will die and no one will take care of him, and he will either be incarcerated or homeless for the rest of his life. ABA therapy is the ONLY thing that works, and saying that it should be banned is disgusting.

purpleblue··on The argument over a long-standing autism intervention
I have a friend with 2 autistic children, who is an activist for autism. One is high functioning and the other is very low functioning. He has told me several times that the only thing that works with his low-functioning child is ABA therapy but it's extremely expensive. In Canada, the autism medical intervention is minimal in many parts of the country and a growing crisis. The idea that some activists would try to get rid of it is astonishing.
purpleblue··on The argument over a long-standing autism intervention
If your first child is autistic then the chances of your second child being autistic skyrocket to well over 50%. The problem is that a lot of autistic symptoms don't show up until you've already had your second kid.
purpleblue··on Jury awards climate scientist Michael Mann $1M in defamation lawsuit
I'm a classic Liberal, but I've never been convinced by the man-made climate change argument. I've always been much, much more concerned about pollution and chemicals in our environment, but that seems to never be addressed. I believe so strongly in protecting the environment that if I had the power, I would invoke anti-constitutional laws that would force chemical company CEOs to live within 1 mile of their worst factories such that those chemicals would be cleaned up immediately.

However, I have many questions about the climate change theory but every time I ask climate change enthusiasts, I get branded as a climate-change-denier or anti-environmental which makes me even more convinced that this is more of a religious debate than a scientific debate.

1) We know that the Earth was much warmer during the Great Warming Period. We also know that the Earth was much colder during the Ice Age. How do we know that right now it's because of CO2 and not because of some process by the planet?

2) As far as I can tell, the theory now is that the changing climate is evidence that the climate-change-via-CO2 theory is correct. I've heard people say that both warmer weather and colder weather are both evidence that the climate-change theory is right. It appears to me that ANY change is evidence that their theory is correct. But they can't have it both ways. In the scientific method, you make a prediction based on your theory and if your prediction doesn't come true then it means your theory is wrong. It appears that ANY CHANGE will validate their thesis, which is absurd, because the only outcome that will invalidate their thesis is NOTHING changes, which we already know is impossible. The Earth is not static and neither is its climate.

3) California had a 10 year drought (that was mostly exacerbated by pumping groundwater for farms but that's another issue entirely). Everyone was calling it "the new normal" but all it took was one good winter and all the reservoirs were filled again to above average levels. Droughts have happened before in California, but people were pointing to it as evidence that human-caused-climate-change was real. No one is talking about how it wasn't evidence at all.

purpleblue··on How iTunes Is Changing on PC
Every PM who worked on iTunes should be cancelled from the tech industry. Having iTunes on your resume should be the Mark of Cain as far as I'm concerned. I've never had the displeasure of working on a more terrible piece of software in my life and it shouldn't be this bad. Shame on everyone who worked on it, even though given Apple stock price, they are likely 8 or 9 figure millionaires.
purpleblue··on How to hire low experience, high potential people
Another garbage "how to hire!" article with no data to back it up, just a bunch of opinions. There's nothing to indicate whether what this person suggests has any success whatsoever and no data to back it up. How many times did she use this methodology and it didn't work out?
purpleblue··on Weaveworks is shutting down
Because no one that matters cares about a company that makes $10 million per year, neither the cofounders nor the board. Everyone wants 100x that because they want to become 9 figure wealthy or more. Better to close down, fuck the customers, and then have the cofounders start a new "journey" in hopes of getting that unicorn status and become fabulously wealthy.
purpleblue··on Due to blade damage, Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will not fly again
Can they just do one more #YOLO flight at a high speed and high altitude as possible and see what happens? Seems more useful and fun than just leaving it to rot.
purpleblue··on Apple dials back car's self-driving features and delays launch to 2028
I recently met someone who worked at a pretty senior level on self-driving cars at one of the main companies pursuing it. After working there a couple of years he decided it's never going to happen to he switched to another company doing entirely different things.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: How to know what you want to do for the rest of your life.
People change their careers on average 7 times. Don't be married to IT if you're miserable, try to find something you enjoy while being paid at it.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
There's nothing easier than hooking up 2 computers via ethernet to an isolated hub, and then watching the traffic go back and forth. There's no additional stuff to filter, you can just look at the packets which match exactly what is shown in TCP/IP Illustrated. From there, you can expand but I think the best experience is sniffing traffic between two computers on a hub to learn the fundamentals.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
If you don't know anything about networking, how on earth are you going to learn about what port-mirroring is? You start off small, and work your way up from foundations. Hubs can be bought on eBay for cheap, and who cares if it's limited to 1Gbe? This is about learning.
