Now I'm just a bum.

psychstudio··on Ask HN: How do you find new music?
Rabbit holes on the metal archives.
psychstudio··on Westinghouse AP300 Small Module Reactor
Nit: it's "Modular"
psychstudio··on Ask HN: How do I know that I am autistic?
> We are all on the autistic spectrum

I hope you're not being serious here because this is patently false and diminishes the experience of those who are actually on the spectrum.

If you do not match the criteria in the DSM, then no, you are not on the spectrum.

psychstudio··on Genesis Filed for Bankruptcy
HN doesn't take too kindly to jokes.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla stock dropping? Meta?
It's the market. Tesla is way overpriced. Now that the market is contacting, money is moving to value instead of speculation.
psychstudio··on I am done. I give up
Been there, done that. However, the worst position to find yourself in is partial traction. A few customers, giving you that slight bit of hope to keep grinding. Then after 5 our more years, you've made 20K and are stone motherless broke. Or maybe that's just me. Chin Up dude.
psychstudio··on How safe is ayahuasca? Large-scale study explores
There are bound to be wild psychoactive mushrooms near you. Do some research and then do some bushwalking (or hiking if you prefer). Mushroom hunting is cathartic.

psychstudio··on It amazes me how many people are blissfully unaware of the rampant tether fraud
I'm relieved you got out of the kidnapping business.
psychstudio··on Layoff spree in Silicon Valley spells end of an era for Big Tech
At least, valuation-wise, I agree. We've been on a ridiculous, risk-on market rally for a decade and a half, fuelled by incredibly cheap money and plenty of discretionary excess, and tech stocks have been the vehicle for speculative trading. My money is on energy and associated mining sectors outperforming in the next market cycle. I think we're about to see the return of Peter Lynch style investing after the washout of excess from tech.

psychstudio··on Shell script best practices, from a decade of scripting things
Kindred spirit. I particularly love variable variables and exploit them often. Some would call it abuse I guess.
psychstudio··on My next Mac might be the last
Honestly, Xubuntu and then forget about it for the next decade. I get it, xfce doesn't have the "cool" factor but it just works and keeps on doing so.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: What Happened to Twitter?
I'm not sure what problem you're experiencing here.

Your engagement has dropped (likes and clicks, etc) because people are engaging with other accounts that are just there to get "likes and clicks" so you want to delete your account and start over in order to get more engagement (likes and clicks)?

Is this correct?

psychstudio··on Eye-tracking is a missing input device for VR experiences
I used to work in eeg and eye tracking software (for neuro-motor rehabilitation and control of robotic arms). Using gaze for fine control is very difficult and terribly unnatural due to saccades and general scene scanning. One easy way to demonstrate how difficult it is is to have a cursor appear at the point of gaze. You're vision "chases" the cursor away from your target like it does a floater. Controlling anything directly with gaze is very very hard.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: Why do software engineers hate technology?
I too have left professional software. Still code to do my own data analysis and stuff, but I feel the same as you. New challenges, more time for the kids and hobbies and less stress.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: What have we lost in tech and society?
Specifically, FF ability to use hardware graphics Accel. Like I said, chromium is fine but the trade-off is unacceptable.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: Why do software engineers hate technology?
I avoid tech that I don't need. Internet phone, home automation, smart *, iPads (are they even a thing anymore?), Subscription services, games, digital entertainment, etc. For me, a number of reasons. Mostly, I just don't need any of that stuff. I want to be present in the world rather than be at the mercy of constant dopamine hit, shiny, need to be constantly using tech, whatever. Financially, I can't justify the ROI. Morally, ethically, socially and psychologically, I've"seen behind the curtain" of tech and thoroughly reject it. Perhaps my decades in software have just made me bitter and tired.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: What have we lost in tech and society?
Sadly, even this is getting harder. I'm running voidlinux on an old 32bit eeepc with 8gb of ram. Mostly, everything is ok for a kids computer except for web browsing. FF simply can't render anything video wise (YouTube, etc), and whilst chromium _can_ I'm unable to get any extensions to successfully block ads. I'm not prepared to let my kids see ads.
psychstudio··on Widespread misperceptions of long-term attitude change
I wrote about this problem a few years ago. Even more relevant today: https://www.psychstudio.com/articles/research-participation
psychstudio··on Is the internet killing the nude beach?
Not just cameras. They're just one small part in the overall degradation of privacy. Constant surveillance _is_, unfortunately a reality. Dystopia right before our very eyes.
psychstudio··on Fix it, Fork it, Fuck off (2019)
That's the price of libre!
psychstudio··on Fix it, Fork it, Fuck off (2019)
This article is written for you, yet you still can not see the problem? Think about it for a moment.

* Does the maintainer have any obligation to you, or anyone else?

* Are you entitled to anything at all from the maintainer?

* Is the maintainer in any way at all responsible for your "professional costs" for using their software?

psychstudio··on Risk Everything (2007)
And then you miss. You're 50 and broke. Back to square 1.
psychstudio··on Ask HN: How to Get into Quant?
A good yt channel to get some insight into systematic trading is "better systems trader". Also, look back through the archives of "chat with traders" yt channel. More experience on those two channels than you can absorb.
psychstudio··on The high price we pay for social media
Everyone now has their own personal Skinner box. To me it just seems so dystopian.
psychstudio··on Is It Even Worth Working on FOSS Anymore?
Also: entitled users who ask if x can be done, and after a comprehensive answer which took a lot of time and thought say "can you make a demo and post the code. thanks"
psychstudio··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
Been using Kodi (XBMC) for nearly 20 years. The piracy FUD surrounding XBMC a few years ago really disappointed me.

We use Kodi for streaming tv (Australia) and internet radio and it is perfect for this.

That's all I wanted to say really. The piracy FUD has been disappointing.

psychstudio··on Web3? I have my DAOts
Bitcoin is completely unrelated to tether. Bitcoin is highly decentralised. Bitcoin is not moving to PoS.

I'm not sure what your actual gripe is, but you certainly have no idea what you're talking about.

psychstudio··on I Don't Want to Be on Call Anymore
I don't read group chats _inside_ working hours. I'm working at work, not group chatting.
psychstudio··on Scattered thoughts on why I waste my own time
