prakhar897··on Google Gemini Pro API Available Through AI Studio
Can someone recreate the Google Demo of gemini?
prakhar897··on Interview: Epic CEO Tim Sweeney after Google antitrust win
deja vu. I forgot their names, but there were two social media platform in 2000s, one offered no moderation and other offered some. The one with some moderation was found guilty of not being able to manage hate speech. Meanwhile the one with no moderation was found not guilty.

prakhar897··on An update on Twitch in Korea
Can you link the sources for this. afaik India still has net neutrality and no bills tabled recently against this.
prakhar897··on Ask HN: What ING Domains did you get?
I got softwaredesign.ing , leetcod.ing and concur.ing. Still hunting more :)
prakhar897··on Mtn Dew Raid Q&A [pdf]
> MTN DEW RAID will be providing streamers at all levels – from casual gamers to the pros - with the chance to supe up their audiences – that’s the prize! However, in order to spread the word MTN DEW is partnering with influencers, as well as existing brand partners, to showcase the RAID program and encourage their followers to join the RAID.

Paying with exposure Wow. and wtf does "supe" even mean here?

prakhar897··on NN-SVG
Is LLM Vis built on top of this?
prakhar897··on If 95% doesn't count as a vote of no confidence, what number would?
I'm sure there's a huge amount of employees who support Altman. But 95% seems a bit too much.

The names of employees supporting Altman were being written down in Google Doc. It created a social pressure to sign or else they'll be banished from their peer group. Same with the "<3" tweets. maybe there would be more dissenters if votes were private.

Kinda reminds me of The Emperor's New clothes [1]

prakhar897··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
@dang please update it to 505.

prakhar897··on Tell HN: LinkedIn has one of the worst dark patterns I have seen on the web
"Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Win+L" opens linkedIn if you're using Windows.
prakhar897··on Everything vs. Anything
Written by GPT?
prakhar897··on SoftBank paid $1.5B to WeWork lenders days before bankruptcy
Either they are trapped in Sunk Cost Fallacy. Or Worse - They are keeping up the charade so current investors can dump Wework/Softbank on someone.
prakhar897··on The .ing top-level domain
I spent some time figuring out how to buy:

1. You have to spend like obscene amount of money to get the domain right now. The amount decreases every day till Dec 5.

2. In Godaddy, You pay for pre-registration of the domain, when it opens on Dec 5 and assuming nobody grabbed it before, you'll have a chance at the lottery with other bidders of purchasing it.

3. Godaddy priority registration is showing wrong pricing. The Phase 1 and 2 are already over and hence showing 20$ prices. From Phase 3 the actual prices start.

prakhar897··on Can you use your "free will"? Try your hand
just using fingers from both hand and looking away from screen brings it down to 50%.
prakhar897··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
Because saying

'the economically disadvantaged' occupy 'substandard housing' in the 'inner cities.'

compared to

"Poor people live in slums"

works better for politicians. They haven't improved the situation, just swept it under the rug that is Oxford Dictionary.

prakhar897··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
Hey, a bit off track but can u see if my portfolio sites have any red flags too :)

prakhar897··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Agreed! However people can use a few eyes to spot glaring holes before reaching out to potential customers.

This also helps people in being involved in other's startups and getting second hand experience of what works and what doesn't.

prakhar897··on It Is Time to End the War on Remote Work
Companies love RTO, this isn't gonna change:

1. Real Estate Loss: These companies have leased a lot of real estate. They can renege and save a lot of money long term. But in short term, they have to pay severance price ---> Less profits ---> Shares drop ---> CEO under pressure.

2. Bosses love Office: If you have a job with corner office, job is ordering people and want to show off your new porsche (since you're richer), can't do it at home.

3. RTO triggered attrition: Market is in a bad shape, companies need to fire people. But layoffs generally signal the market that the company is no longer growing. RTO acts as a proxy for layoffs.

4. Incentive based compensation: if you put "Employee of the month" on a wall , you can get away with paying x% less to the same employee. Similar effect doesn't occur with over-the-internet recognition.

5. Locking People in: A remote employee can jump companies in a matter of few clicks. For office based companies, you have to move house/cities and deal with a new commute.

prakhar897··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Problem: There are lots of forums like r/AppIdeas, r/ideas, indiehackers, hackernews etc where people post their ideas/products/landing-pages for feedback. They sparsely get any feedback as the other people on these forums are also looking for feedback, but not willing to "give" feedback.

Solution: Created a Discord Server where you need to give 3 feedbacks to request 1. This way it encourages people to participate in the discussion instead of just spamming their ideas.

Traction: 40 signups so far.

prakhar897··on Ask HN: Sales Tips for Solo Devs?
Customers are a who-where pair. What's your Ideal Customer Profile, and where do they hang out. I would've started there "before" building.
prakhar897··on One Revolution per Minute [video]
Space ships will be the cruise ships of 2200. Atleast they won't pollute earth. :)
prakhar897··on This is financial advice [video]
Youtube never recommends me something and instead prefers to keep repeating old videos. Probably because people re-watch a lot.

Is there any way as a consumer to discover new content (matching my taste) on Youtube. Seems like newer channels struggle a lot with this problem.

prakhar897··on Ask HN: SaaS pricing pages with high prices and not “contact sales”
Curious, who is your target audience? I can't figure out whether you're selling to the CEOs or the Engineering Managers. and how do you target them?
prakhar897··on 'Counterfeit people': The danger posed by Meta’s AI celebrity lookalike chatbots
A "supposedly" whistleblower talked about this in detail. Meta was able to generate the whole life of a person from childhood to old age, and was able to simulate social media activities such as media posting, messaging etc.

I documented the original text here: https://twitter.com/prakgupta_/status/1630669890138025984

prakhar897··on I moved states just before the return-to-office order at Amazon, so I quit
It's a mixed bag really. I quit Amazon few months back. The pay was nice but the workload, stress and especially the politics was too much for me. I'm thankful that I quit early, since if I had gotten a promo, my family would never let me quit. nobody pays even near that much in India.

Nowadays I think about how much wealthy I could've been. But I'm also happy not doing astronomical amount of work. Grass is always greener on the other side. :)

prakhar897··on My solopreneur story
I was also interested in this. So, I scraped and crunched a lot of IndieHackers data. Things like which fields are most pursued, how many ventures succeed etc. You can read the complete report here: https://prakgupta.com/blog/real_world_stats_for_bootstrappin...
prakhar897··on What will LLM-powered software look like in the medium-term future?
I also wrote an article a while ago in the same vein. https://prakgupta.com/blog/envisioning_a_future_with_gpt

The largest problem with a gpt future imo would be bot networks creating manufactured outrage. these will shift the decisions of policymakers towards those who controls these networks ie big corp.
