peteretep··on 93% of Paint Splatters Are Valid Perl Programs (2019)
One person’s tool is another person’s livelihood, the corner stone of their professional experience, and the basis by which other people will (apparently) judge their technical expertise
peteretep··on 93% of Paint Splatters Are Valid Perl Programs (2019)
Yes, sorry, I edited it to change it from present tense to past tense, as that was more in line with my meaning
peteretep··on 93% of Paint Splatters Are Valid Perl Programs (2019)
You said you wrote some code, and the memory of it makes you still wake up screaming. What’s the alleged insult, exactly?
peteretep··on 93% of Paint Splatters Are Valid Perl Programs (2019)
I’m sorry the code you produced made you so unhappy

EDIT: verb tense changed

As someone who reads a lot of CVs: if you’re applying for a front-end role and your CV looks like ass, maybe fix that?
peteretep··on SARS-CoV-2 Gamma variant infected 16 fully Pfizer vaccinated Guiana gold miners
> those miners are strong healthy men

I think mining is exceptionally poor for your health, esp re respiratory disease, lack of vitamin D, and also usually highly correlated with near poverty (and the health issues that’s associated with)

> but I'm surprised you describe SOB as a slight inconvenience

Ever been to a high altitude city? I was short of breath for my first week in Mexico City, and my lungs hurt after exercise. It’s very disconcerting, but also just a slight inconvenience.

peteretep··on Bezos donates $100M each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jose Andres
> Bezos is not 1 million times more productive

Bezos has unambiguously produced 1m times more than what most humans have.

You mean "countries", right, or are you trying to make some point about nationalism?

peteretep··on EU plans to make Bitcoin transfers more traceable
because a company is a legal entity and a DAO is a cryptographic slot machine. A DAO is no more a company than my 10 year old nephew’s gang is a company, although there exist similarly arcane rules, a complex voting system, and a great deal of wishful thinking in both.

Could you turn a DAO into a company? Sure, if you incorporated it, but that requires a country to incorporate it in.

My (previously medicated) anxiety disorder has disappeared since I stopped drinking more than one coffee a day and started supplementing with l-theanine.
peteretep··on Spanish police seize large drone used to carry drugs from Morocco
Am I completely off-base in thinking almost everything about a submersible drone is a better idea? No radar signature, much bigger haulage, can idle in location for much longer when needed, and presumably supports somewhat surreptitious unloading at sea if needed?
peteretep··on Emmanuel Macron identified in leaked Pegasus project data
Yes, Russia and China are openly hostile to the US and to the world order in general.
peteretep··on Emmanuel Macron identified in leaked Pegasus project data
> This looks like a shocking news

It _is_ shocking news: the Israelis are selling munitions to the Moroccan government explicitly for use against the French state.

peteretep··on Emmanuel Macron identified in leaked Pegasus project data
That’s hilarious, although I suspect “don’t hack the US” means “don’t hack five eyes” in practice

That’s not a real thing

peteretep··on Hungarian journalists and critics of Orbán were targeted with Pegasus
Or they could just develop decent sanctions and enforce them. Hungary is a massive net recipient of EU funds, which seems a great starting lever, plus throw just the smallest amount of friction into their Schengen status, and you've got something pretty potent there.

> the lower middle class are (to generalise) materially well-off ... they have large televisions ... through pure boredom/decadence they were radicalised ... about things they largely don't fully grasp

8/10 top parody comment. You could have strengthened it by suggesting they turn to brioche if they don't have enough bread to eat though.

peteretep··on Time to assume that health research is fraudulent until proven otherwise?
> They further argued that being transgender was not the issue for them, rather having male genitalia was

To be clear, the beauticians explicitly didn't care (per their claims) what the birth sex of the customer was, so I'm not sure how that would be a relevant question here? Per their claims, they'd have had the same issue with a trans-man who'd had bottom surgery.

peteretep··on Time to assume that health research is fraudulent until proven otherwise?
Are you confused that a “question” can be a hate crime? Seems pretty straight-forward to me?
peteretep··on ‘Everyone is dying’: Myanmar on the brink of decimation
> I'm not so clear about that

Try your best to get a projected CFR of 25% using any metrics you can with a population that’s 70% under 40, even one with TB rates like Myanmar. Can’t be done.

peteretep··on Cryptocurrency is like taking the worst parts of today's capitalist system
> The difference between magic internet money and USD is the word internet.

No, the differences are that people denominate prices in USD, there’s a gigantic and mature financial services industry around USD, and finally I have recourse to the courts for most USD transaction.

peteretep··on Assange case: Key witness admits he lied
> Yet the question remains; on what basis are they holding him in prison right now?

sayeth Wikipedia:

> On 13 September 2019, District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled that Assange would not be released on 22 September when his prison term ended, because he was a flight risk and his lawyer had not applied for bail. She said when his sentence came to an end, his status would change from a serving prisoner to a person facing extradition.

So he’s on remand: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remand_(detention)

> Because imprisonment without trial is contrary to the presumption of innocence, pretrial detention in liberal democracies is usually subject to safeguards and restrictions. Typically, a suspect will be remanded only if it is likely that he or she could commit a serious crime, interfere with the investigation, or fail to come to the trial.

Because he’s a proven flight risk.

Because VIP users include people who run big-tech. Ask Bezos if it's worth fixing bugs that only target VIPs.

peteretep··on ‘Everyone is dying’: Myanmar on the brink of decimation
Sure, but the medical claim is clearly insane and also the headline
peteretep··on ‘Everyone is dying’: Myanmar on the brink of decimation
The situation there sounds dire, but this story is literally a set of WhatsApp messages turned into “news”.

> One very reputable public health specialist expects that the population will be decimated by at least 10-15 million by the time Covid is done with Myanmar

I really don’t think you can come up with a headline figure like that and then hand-wave away the actual source.

My Bangkok dentist with an MPH from a good American university has been forwarding me Covid horror stories that are trivially debunked as fake news for the last 18 months — without names and verifiable quotes, the whole thing is worthless.
