pera··on Reducing methane is the fastest strategy available to reduce warming
You are wrong:

- Methane is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

- Methane is the second most abundant anthropogenic GHG after carbon dioxide (CO2), accounting for about 20 percent of global emissions.

pera··on Is DALL-E 2 ‘gluing things together’ without understanding their relationships?
Interesting, DALL-E Mini / Craiyon actually generates a pretty accurate result for "a monkey touching an iguana" (at least semantically):

pera··on Ask HN: Is my software stack choice sound?
Ecto is one of the "killer apps" in the Elixir ecosystem and you will very likely want to use it with Postgres.
pera··on Leaked memo reveals Amazon’s plans to combat the Teamsters in California
> There's a difference between "neutralizing unions" and "neutralizing labor's attempt to ..."

The term neutralize as used here (i.e. "to counteract the activity or effect of : make ineffective", Merriam-Webster dictionary) actually make both sentences nearly identical.

pera··on Leaked memo reveals Amazon’s plans to combat the Teamsters in California
Why do you consider the headline sensationalist? They are using the same language used in their memo:

> provide political cover for local policymakers, neutralize organized labors’ attempts to grow their coalition of third-party validators and spokespeople [...]

pera··on Framework Laptop (2022) review: the repairability dream
I have this issue with a Dell XPS 13 (2021) with Ubuntu, I read in several places this is common problem among modern Intel based laptops, even in Windows.
pera··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
This isn't about "ideological purity" nor technology: My home is literally the only place where my family and I still have some form of privacy, is it too hard to understand that we don't want random strangers having the power to lurk into our lives 24/7?
pera··on Quantum scientists deliver world’s first integrated circuit at the atomic scale
Actually Australia has quite a lot of research in quantum information science.
pera··on Amazon is intimidating and harassing organizing workers in Montreal
I'm a native Spanish speaker and most, if not all, people I know use "Estadounidenses" or "yankees" (colloquially). I do see "Americanos" used in translated media though.
pera··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
I'm not sure what do you mean by "theft-less" but I believe you might be conflating inspiration with derivative work: Copilot can produce verbatim copies of open-source code, this would make it more similar to how some musicians sample other people's music to create new music.
pera··on The integrated timetable of Switzerland
ah cool that sounds very reasonable then
pera··on The integrated timetable of Switzerland
Is there any alternative to this? Because that's about 4 times the price of the normal monthly local bus pass in the US and the UK. Most people don't need to travel around the country, they just need to commute to their jobs.
pera··on HSBC exec suspended after comments about climate change
Wow this is way worse than what I could have imagined, the rhetoric of these people is going from "climate change is false" to "I don't give a shit, I'm rich and I will survive"
pera··on Ashton Kutcher’s non-profit, Thorn, supports EU plans for CSAM scanning
I think people like him (i.e. a person without any background in computer science, AI, information security, etc) shouldn't be pushing for a solution they don't really comprehend. To me this is similar to those who were pushing for hydroxychloroquine/ivermectin/bleach as a cure for COVID-19. This is very dangerous, even if you are well-intentioned.
pera··on Ask HN: Is Erlang an albatross to Elixir adoption?
> The notion that to learn a language you also need to learn a second one is not great

It depends on how far you're trying to go maybe? You could argue that, for any given programming language, there is always a point where you will have to learn some intermediate representation language to achieve certain tasks; I personally don't think this is unique to Elixir.

pera··on Japan’s plan to dump nuclear waste into the pacific ocean may not be safe
According to the article I cited:

> Greenpeace said it had confirmed with Tepco that the system was not designed to remove carbon-14

Maybe there are updates on this matter but I couldn't find anything online.

pera··on Japan’s plan to dump nuclear waste into the pacific ocean may not be safe
Tritium is not the only radioactive isotope present though:

https://www.greenpeace.org/static/planet4-japan-stateless/20...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/23/fukushima-reac...

> In addition to high levels of hazardous radionuclides such as strontium-90, TEPCO on 27 August 2020 acknowledged for the first time the presence of high levels of carbon-14 in the contaminated tank water

pera··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
Which provider do you use? (by the way, I didn't mean that every cheap provider will have issues, prgmr/Tornado for instance works great for me)
pera··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
It also depends on the reputation of your neighbours / AS... try to setup an e-mail server with a cheap VPS in DigitalOcean|OVH|Hetzner and even if you kept using the same IP address for 10 years I don't think you will be able to relay to gmail

I don't think this is true, take a look at the top posts a decade and so ago:

pera··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Imagine having the possibility of feeding millions in the Global South but instead decide to spend your money in bullshit like this...
pera··on ICANN's rejection of Ukraine's request to sever Russia from the internet [pdf]
> the populace exerts sufficient pressure against leadership. That means protests, that means civil disobedience.

If this is what you want then cutting Russians out of the Internet is a terrible idea: consider that most are just now learning that they are actually at war and not in a freedom military operation (as the state media is making them believe).

pera··on Perl code that is syntactically correct only on Fridays
heh as soon as I saw the ternary expression I recalled the bug report I submitted some years ago:

https://rt-archive.perl.org/perl5/Ticket/Display.html?id=130...

pera··on In Argentina, inflation is a way of life
It's actually much more than 15-30% if you go with the official/legal way: I would say you likely lose ~70% at the moment. Most people doing contract jobs in Argentina have a bank account in Uruguay, the US or Europe, and use cryptocurrencies or travel to bring cash.
pera··on Germany doesn't rule out closing Telegram – interior minister
Hilarious, everyone I know in Germany uses Telegram, it seems quite popular over there.
pera··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyghur_genocide

Do you believe this whole article is "Wester media propaganda"?

In my opinion the entire world is responsible for these atrocities, not only China.

pera··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
Do you think siding with Pompeo on this issue is more sensible than "siding" with NGOs like ACLU, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Reporters Without Borders?
pera··on Wikipedia is loaded, so why’s it asking for donations?
> The global warming and MMR vaccine articles are examples; I hardly need to dive into these pages, since it is quite enough to say that they endorse definite positions that scientific minorities reject. Another example is how Wikipedia treats various topics in alternative medicine—often dismissively, and frequently labeled as “pseudoscience” in Wikipedia’s own voice. [...]

Yeah I'm OK with Wikipedia being biased against misinformation.

pera··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
I have the same machine for work: early this year sleep mode was not very useful (it wouldn't pass a weekend), but after an Ubuntu upgrade a few months ago it got much better. Yet, it's still worse than my 6 year old ThinkPad.
