pehtis··on Evidence of inconsistencies in evaluation process and selection of winners
People love offloading their thinking. They offload to tv reporters, to religions to political parties.. Offloading to AI sounds a lot better IMO.
pehtis··on 98% of all recent environmental claims can be categorized as "greenwashing"
Agreed. Carbon offsetting always reminds me of this old The Register article: https://www.theregister.com/2008/02/01/bofh_episode_4/

pehtis··on A story about bypassing air Canada's in-flight network restrictions
Another option would be to setup a wireguard server listening on 53. Wireguard traffic is UDP so it would work even if TCP DNS requests are blocked. And it would also make the client configuration much easier, ie just connect to the wireguard server.
pehtis··on Using your phone on toilet may give you hemorrhoids: study
Leonardo da Vinci in his Codex Atlanticus said “Do not delay or prolong your visits to the lavatory”. Looks like that was some good advice.
pehtis··on A Tektronix TDS 684B Oscilloscope Uses CCD Analog Memory
Its called soft touch or "rubber oil". It's basically silicone suspended in plastic which gives that soft touch feeling before it biodegrades to the sticky goo.. We can easily clean that with isopropyl alcohol. You will be left with the clean hard plastic below that layer.
pehtis··on Teuken-7B-Base and Teuken-7B-Instruct: Towards European LLMs
Meltemi is ok, but it's "old" and not that good by today's standards. If you need a good Greek local LLM try https://huggingface.co/ilsp/Llama-Krikri-8B-Instruct. Yes, I know it's based on LLama and not a foundation model, but it is still a LOT better than Meltemi.
pehtis··on My SBC Collection
Have you seen H3+ ? it looks like its an HC2 with a more powerful CPU. I just received one and my plan to install OpenBSD on it some time this week.

pehtis··on Russian oil sold to India at 30% above Western price cap, traders say
It has a lot to do with the 1971 war: https://www.indiatimes.com/news/india/when-russia-stunned-us...
pehtis··on A blocky based CAD program
I would highly recommend moi3D.com. Its ‘only’ a NURBS modeler but I’ve successfully used from initial concept design all the way to DFM. Its user interface is extremely well thought out and its written by Michael Gibson who is also the original developer of Rhino3D.
pehtis··on MythBusters Helped a Wrongly Convicted Man Prove His Innocence
About your first point, MAD was actually developed by John von Neumann and there is nothing accidental about it. 'He also "moved heaven and earth" to bring MAD about.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_von_Neumann#Mutual_assure...
pehtis··on Dicom File Format Basics
I'm using this one on macOS https://github.com/rordenlab/MRIcroGL It is available for linux too.
pehtis··on The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence
I think that the fact that our society was mainly designed (or evolved) to maximize the profits of the people in power as opposed to peoples wellbeing plays a huge part in depression. Some people just don't fit in our monoculture (school, job, family etc) and all we are offering them are ways to make them fit and become productive members of society which was the problem to begin with..
pehtis··on Comcast: Simulating shitty network connections so you can build better systems
If you are on macOS you can use the "Network Link Conditioner" System Preferences pane that is included with Xcode for the same effect.

You can find that in the Additional Tools for Xcode download, in the Hardware folder.

pehtis··on Tailscale SSH
You can still use telnet v1.9.4 on macOS. Just copy it from an old version of OSX (pre High Sierra). It still works fine on Monterey.
pehtis··on The Framework Laptop Is Great for a Linux-Friendly, Upgradeable/Modular Laptop
There is a very nice writeup on using OpenBSD on the Framework laptop by joshua stein, one of the OpenBSD developers. Unfortunately he had to swap the wifi card as it was unsupported. https://jcs.org/2021/08/06/framework
pehtis··on No laughing matter? what the Romans found funny
In Cyprus, where i live, this is an actual joke still said today! I've heard (and said) this joke many times in my life, and it never crossed my mind that it's 2000 years old. Setup is the same and the punchline goes "Οτι νομίζεις τζιαι εν καλά τζιαι ύστερα τρώμε!" (in Cypriot greek)
pehtis··on Apple's child protection features spark concern within its own ranks: sources
I wouldn't go that far. I need something with a decent browser at the very least.
pehtis··on Apple's child protection features spark concern within its own ranks: sources
If it stays like that then it's manageable i guess.
pehtis··on Apple's child protection features spark concern within its own ranks: sources
Yes, thats exactly how i feel. I'd still hate it if my iCloud uploads are scanned but I'm already assuming that anyway.

But the fact that my iOS device can potentially report me to any authorities, for whatever reason, is crossing a line that makes it impossible to ever own an iPhone again. I bought my first one in 2007 so I'm not saying this lightly..

Does anybody know if this policy will extend to macOS too?

pehtis··on M1 MacBook battery life so good Apple thought indicator was broken
Its still there, just not on the menu bar. Try Activity Monitor/Energy. The battery graph, time remaining etc is at the bottom.
pehtis··on macOS gatekeeper and file quarantine bypass
Yes it cares. If you rename a folder to folder.app then it will change to look and "behave" like an app. Or if you change the extension of a video file to mp3 you'll loose the icon preview.

Finder does try to help with renaming and when you try to rename a file only the filename is selected and not the extension.

pehtis··on macOS gatekeeper and file quarantine bypass
I will never understand why "Show all filename extensions" is unchecked by default in Finder.
pehtis··on Firefox 82
It has been available for some time now, just not enabled by default. Try setting apz.allow_zooming to true and restarting Firefox.
pehtis··on Mac Keeps a Log of All Your Downloads
The linked post shows the commands in allcaps (Safari/macOs) so the actual preference filename is: com.apple.LaunchServices.QuarantineEventsV2 That file contains very few tens of random, mostly old filenames, almost none from Safari which is my main browser.

So at the very least "a log of all your downloads" is a huge exaggeration.

pehtis··on Mac Keeps a Log of All Your Downloads
This is from 2013.

COM.APPLE.LAUNCHSERVICES.QUARANTINEEVENTSV or more likely com.apple.launchservices.quarantineeventsv does not even exist any more..

pehtis··on Where our economy is, for the young
> It is those workers, those who don't own their sources of income, that are struggling to make rent.

That is exactly how social classes are distinguished in Marxism: "[T]he class of modern wage labourers who, having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling their labour power in order to live"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxism#Social_classes

pehtis··on OpenBSD on the Desktop (Part I)
It first appeared in OpenBSD 2.3 in 1998: https://man.openbsd.org/OpenBSD-2.3/rc.conf

Are you sure that you checked or did you assume that it wasn't there based on you Linux experience?
