patchorang··on Layoff-sucks: Helping laid-off people find their next job
I'm getting the same thing, not on every one, but every 5 or so rows the linkedin link doesn't work. Chrome.
patchorang··on Why Meta is tanking and how Zuckerberg can fix it

patchorang··on How Brian Eno Created Ambient 1: Music for Airports
I slightly different flavor of ambient, but I love this playlist. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0FRsEBJWjCWOyia0Yyz7ak?si=...
patchorang··on The Disappearing Art of Maintenance
I agree that bikes are a great way to dip your feet into maintenance. But everything is not swappable. There are a handful of "standards" for each part of the bike. It's not insane, but replacing a part often requires researching all the standards and understand what you have and what you could upgrade it to. Getting a new bike often requires getting a couple of new tools.

That said, if you ride bikes regularly but take it to the shop for maintenance, try doing your next service yourself. There are tons of online videos to help you. It will require an upfront investment of some tools, but they will pay for themselves the second time you use them.

patchorang··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
With Figma's memory and performance issues lately, it feels like Adobe bought them a year ago.
patchorang··on Am I an idiot for wanting a dumber phone?
It seems that a lot of people want a "dumber phone" but also don't want to give up thing like Maps/Spotify/Quality Camera/2FA app/etc. I am one of those people have found a solution that has worked well for myself. (iOS only)

I use Screentime and give the password to my partner. I have blocked downloading new apps and websites I waste time on. This lets me have access to useful apps and I can look things up on the internet (but not browse reddit). If can always temporarily get the password from my partner if I need a new app or am traveling.

I highly recommend trying it out if you want a dumber-phone but don't want a dumb phone.

patchorang··on Ask HN: Why do I struggle to follow corporate meetings?
It's abstraction, but for things you don't care about. I was an engineer early in my career and I felt exactly as you. All that stuff was in one ear and out the other and I couldn't for the life of me make sense of it.

I moved to product and finally got it. A PM can't explain the same concepts/ideas/initiatives/etc every meeting because the whole meeting will be spent doing that. They give it a name.

Take the strategy example. In the early stages of forming this strategy, part of the PMs job is to communicate it lots of groups of people. They have the same meeting 1-10 times depending on the size of the company. Then everyone who needs to know about this strategy has an understanding of what it is. Then the PM gives it a name. The next meeting, rather than having to explain it from scratch, they call it by its name.

You're either not paying attention when it is first explained (I don't blame you, a lot doesn't matter to an engineer), or you weren't invited to the meeting it was explained.

patchorang··on Ask HN: How to keep my daughter busy while tickling her curiosity
Make a stop motion video - there are cheap/free apps that make it really easy to do

Not sure if you have any instruments around the house, but make a song with her

Like another poster said, make magazine. They have tooons of good projects.

patchorang··on Facebook loses users for the first time
(this was years ago but) I thought this too. I was relatively new to a new city and still building my friend group. I was worried that if I deleted facebook I wouldn't get invited to events, keep in touch with new people I met.

I deleted it anyway. Deleting facebook didn't change my real world in anyway.

patchorang··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs without anything planned. How did it go?
Good to know, I've mostly worked at startups/smaller companies so it's been a little less flexible.
patchorang··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs without anything planned. How did it go?
I've done this 3 times in my 8 year career so far. I pretty much leave every job this way. I like to take a few months between jobs to do my own thing and take a break.

If you are financially stable enough and are in a spot in your career where you don't think you'll need to worry about getting another job too much. DO IT. Looking back at the last 8 years, those periods off are the periods I remember the most.

One time I had a tougher time finding a job (but I was also only a little over a year into my career). The other times I haven't had a problem. One time my old company hired me back with a promotion/raise. Most recently, I did some VERY easy part time contract work for about 6 months. I think these breaks are becoming much more common and I don't think it impacts my resume too much.

I wish there was a way to get a new job with a starting date 3-6 months in the future. That would be the ideal situation.

patchorang··on Is Ford about to reinvent the bicycle derailleur?
I think they were referencing mountain bikes. They are nearly all 1x now.
patchorang··on Inuits have hundreds of words for sea ice (2013)
There are dozens of words for snow in American English. If you have ever skied you've probably at least encountered "powder". If you regularly backcountry ski you will have a huge vocabulary to describe snow, snow conditions, and the snowpack.

I don't think it's all that surprising that Inuits would have so many words to describe snow, if you spend any amount of in snowy conditions you will too.

patchorang··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
Sounds like an episode of joe Rogan.
patchorang··on Jeff Varasano's NY Pizza Recipe (2008)
I sometimes wonder if a "squarespace for the old web" would make any sense. Sorta ironic, but maybe it could work...
patchorang··on A DIY E-bike Conversion on the Cheap
I followed Copenhagen in the early years, it seemed like the product was always in "beta". I was waiting to get one once it went into production, but that never came. My guess is something like what you said.

It seems like they have since pivoted to scooters.

patchorang··on Curated list of personal blogs
I love this. I'm in the ultrarunning community and I LOVE reading everyone's blog posts/trip reports/race reports/adventures. But everyone stopped updating them over the past 5 years or so. Now that sort of thing is just an Instagram photo with a paragraph or two. The depth and character of those old blog posts have been lost. I wish in depth blog posts would come back, but in reality, I don't think they are.

Side note: My other favorite types of websites are very specific human-curated lists... which also seem to have died out.

patchorang··on Variable tyre pressure wheelset is a mountain biking breakthrough
I think this is an apt comparison, but for me it comes down to the complication of the products. I used to be able to just plug in my headphones and they worked. Now it's a constant struggle of bluetooth syncing, connection issues, forgetting to charge the battery. I have multiple pairs of wireless headphones sitting around the house, but I've gone back to $19 wired headphones because I was sick of the headache of dealing with wireless.

I feel this is the same thing with bikes. A mountain bike requires nearly constant work/maintenance. I bet a well maintained bike costs 1/10th the value of the bike/year. And this is without any electronics. Maybe electronics will simply maintenance a bit, but when they inevitably break I'm hosed.

I don't want electronic shifters. I want a simple and reliable bike.

Maybe electronics will eventually be the solution to this, but right now they cause more headache than anything.

patchorang··on Ask HN: Not resting fully because can't sleep long enough
I have this problem too. I haven't solved it, but one thing that has helped is setting an alarm and not looking at the time while sleeping. If you wake up at anytime during the night, go back to sleep without looking at a clock. Don't get out of bed until your alarm goes off.

After a while of waking up too early, it got to the point of waking up at 4am and thinking "that's close enough" and I would get out of bed. (Attempting) to go back to sleep regardless of the time seems to have helped that a bit.

patchorang··on I Was Google’s Head of International Relations. Here’s Why I Left
Just a bit of a side note, but I was in China last fall, and using Bing there were many search results that you could not click through. However the few sentence description below the search link often had information that would be censored elsewhere.
patchorang··on A once-classified anomaly nearly killed NASA's first moon astronauts
I had a professor that told us about when he found a bug in some of the flight code while he was interning at NASA. They decided it was too late to fix the bug, so they also put a sticky note on the control panel with instructions. Now I'm wonder how many sticky notes were on that control panel.
patchorang··on iOS 12 introduces new features to reduce interruptions and manage Screen Time
Also the perspective on your screenshots are off. They get larger as the get further away. This is really disorienting.

Also try and throw them in to an iMac, it looks much nicer.

patchorang··on Old Smartphones Are a Problem for Apple and Samsung
If it also included music streaming, I would buy one.
patchorang··on 9-5 Is Out. Try the 1-6 Instead
I have started going for lunch walks this winter. The effect has been dramatic. If you have low energy levels in the winter or experience SAD, definitely try lunch walks.
patchorang··on 9-5 Is Out. Try the 1-6 Instead
I live in a region where winter days are very short. I go to work and it's dark, I leave work and it's dark. I don't understand why we have decided to go sit in buildings during daylight hours.

Even with a 40-hour week, I would love if the work day was shifted to allow one to get sunlight for a few hours each day.

patchorang··on Eric Schmidt: People want dish-washing robots more than any other kind
I would much rather have a robot cook for me, even if I had to wash it’s dishes.
patchorang··on Humanscale, the Classic Design Tool, Gets a Second Life
The Kickstarter says December 2017.
patchorang··on Ask HN: What does an electrical engineer actually do at work?
There are a bunch of EEs in here complaining about the software they have to use. I took a few EE courses in school and the only thing I remember is having to use horrible software.

Why hasn't someone made good software for EEs to use? And if the have, why do no EEs use it?

patchorang··on Why I killed my standing desk
If you don't mind making one yourself you can do it pretty cheap. I copied mine off http://www.codeovereasy.com/2013/09/diy-adjustable-desk-for-..., and it took just a few hours and $40.
