"derweil is an interactive video installation correlating time, space and big data to provide tailor-made instructions on how to get lost. Materials: Google Directions and Streetview APIs, JavaScript, NW.js, cables.gl, Involt, Arduino IDE, computers, thermal paper, plastic, metals, wood."
(I doubt I could still run this today, though. I used some kind of 'hack' to bypass Google Streetview API limitations and I'm pretty sure they fixed this ages ago… ;D)
That said, some of the information, especially regarding the more technical parts, is somewhat misleading (debatable, simplification is hard), and at times outright false (e.g. "This method is called LoRA (Loopy Recurrent Attention)"… what?), so don't make it your only source of info. Eg. I found this also helpful: https://blenderneko.github.io/ComfyUI-docs/
Under the hood, it's Python (Flask), mostly using GPT-3 & 4 plus Midjourney (with fallbacks to DALL-E and local Stable Diffusion as using Midjourney programmatically is pretty fragile). I tried fine-tuning models, but as I did not have enough data, I got better results just chaining complex, modular prompts. The conveyor belt was made out of spare parts for treadmills… feel free to ask any questions!
The installation used realtime data (Google directions API): I somehow figured out, that if I would run this from a local machine and reset the browser frequently, Google would let me do this even without an API key… they certainly sensed something was awry and I did get API warnings and captchas because of 'suspicious traffic on my network', but they were nice enough not to block me completely. I strongly doubt this would still work though, this was in 2017.
Pictures and videos of the installation: https://maschinenzeitmaschine.de/derweil/
it provides you with an in-browser, graphical, node based interface where you can just connect boxes together and it will output js-code ready to implement in your website.
(disclosure: i know the dev plus am a huge fan!)

Edit: wording and spelling.
For the "why?": in 2013 our chancellor Merkel said (on the NSA scandal) "Das Internet ist für uns alle Neuland." which translates to "The internet is unchartered territories for all of us." – in 2013! As far as I know, they only have Wifi in the Bundestag (the parliament) for like two or three years, and I would not be surprised, if most of our politicians still read their emails printed out on paper. Seriously, it is that bad. Germany is in the stone age in this regard.
