padmanabhan01··on Microsoft Statement Regarding MSN China Joint Venture’s Juku Feature
This episode, I guess is the best thing that could have happened to plurk. For all the publicity I mean.
padmanabhan01··on Microsoft rips off Plurk
So, how does this work? Will everything be fine if they maintained the same look and feel and intentionally obfuscated/added more junk to their code to make the code look different?
padmanabhan01··on The patent system: End it, don't mend it
What is wrong with trade secrets anyway? It's not like someone who discovered something is obligated to reveal it to the world. If he chooses to do so out of his good will, fine. But if trade secrets remain despite patent system, that can only mean patent system is not fully enforceable yet.
padmanabhan01··on Google Chrome for Mac released (beta)
Not sure if this is just me, but Google autoupdate is just broken for mac. It pops up even when the program is not running and the update only works if the current user is an admin. It does not prompt for admin password like all other updates do. And there was no way to not have autoupdate. That led me uninstall all Google software a while back.
padmanabhan01··on Crunchpad renamed "JooJoo" will cost $499 on sale Dec. 11
economies of scale and fixed costs apply for most products that involve manufacturing. Not only for cutting edge ones
padmanabhan01··on Crunchpad renamed "JooJoo" will cost $499 on sale Dec. 11
If you have no product, you wont make a single penny, Sure. But, if you have no marketers, you will not be able to sell enough units to make up for the fixed costs involved, and you would end up with a loss, which is even worse.
padmanabhan01··on Bookstore has Black Friday Anti-Sale, Customers Pay Same or More
I believe the world would be a better place if there were no special sale events. That way you can buy what you want whenever you want without having to worry about someone else buying it for 30% less a week later. Also saves that useless hassle of searching for deals!
padmanabhan01··on Depressed woman loses benefits over Facebook photos
If it is serious, why aren't those benefits available in US?
padmanabhan01··on Coin-operated Borgocrat goes to Google, acquires whole new set of opinions
'Even Microsoft’s online version of Outlook called Outlook Web Access is far better than Gmail'

Even according to the standards of marketers/evengelists, this is so overboard.

padmanabhan01··on Rogue Amoeba abandons iPhone because of App Store approval insanity
From a pure business perspective, who is losing out here?

I mean, a web developer may hate IE, but what would be the outcome if he designs the site as firefox/safari alone. or a software developer for that matter with windows.

If the project is a hobby, sure. anything and everything goes. But what about the business perspective?

padmanabhan01··on Verizon: How Much Do You Charge Now?
Gosh! I didn't realize I was being charged each and every time I pressed that stupid button accidentally. I don't even remember how many times I would have done that!
padmanabhan01··on Steve Jobs Named ‘CEO of the Decade’
I don't think anyone else even comes close.
padmanabhan01··on The Incompetence of American Airlines and the Fate of Mr. X
From the point of view of the management - this is someone who wrote an article about the company having big time bureaucracy, lot of teams that don't talk to each other and hinting that the company culture is all messed up. well, what can one expect.
padmanabhan01··on The Chinese Internet: Why the “Copy Cats” Win
So basically the Govt blocks free western sites so that these entrepreneurs can make money. Nice.
padmanabhan01··on Daring Fireball: Pound the Quality
One good thing however is that there is less clutter in apps than their corresponding websites. In some cases, I find using the app more convenient than going to the site in computer browser. Lack of screen space maybe forced them to include just the important part and skip the clutter and made the whole thing better, in my opinion.
padmanabhan01··on Magic Mouse - The world’s first Multi-Touch mouse
Wondering why it doesn't have 3/4 finger gestures, like the trackpad does
padmanabhan01··on Judge: Mobile Phone Ringtones are Not Concerts
Until I read this, I didn't actually believe in Einstein's quote of human stupidity being infinite.
padmanabhan01··on Are App Stores Evil?
If it isn't obvious, convenience to customers or end users is what is more important than that of developers.having less hassle for users is far more important than having more freedom for developers. That is how it works in all other industries and that is how it is supposed to work logically based on mere # of devs VS # of users. In that perspective, I think App store is just Great! It does eliminate a lot of hassles for the end user.

I mean, how many articles have we read when a user complains about the App store. Isn't it always some developer that has issues with it?

padmanabhan01··on AT&T to allow 3G Skype calls
One benefit is I no longer have to use my minutes to call 1800 #s. like cust service etc
padmanabhan01··on AT&T Goes After Google Voice
Well, if different networks can charge different amounts for access, why not charge different amounts for different networks based on what they charge?
padmanabhan01··on AT&T Goes After Google Voice
Why block? why not just tell the user he is calling an expensive line and charge him more for it?
padmanabhan01··on Richard Posner on "How I Became a Keynesian"
That is what makes it even worse. Those benefiting from that would be those who get to spend the extra money first and those affected are those that save. That would defeat the whole point of money as a store of value, since it would be losing its value.
padmanabhan01··on Barack Obama Loves Startups: New Federal Office for Early-Stage Entrepreneurs
This is basically taxing the citizens to pay for the expenses of a private company. High time someone defines how and how not a Government can use/abuse tax payer's money.
padmanabhan01··on An opposing viewpoint on net neutrality
"when we’re talking about ISPs that are near-monopolies built in large part on the basis of government subsidy or exclusive federal licensing,"

Isn't that the real problem? Govt first helps create monopolies and then worries about how to deal with them with antitrust and what not and starts lecturing about the flaws of free market or capitalism. Why create those monopolies in the first place? Why not have free market all along? This is the same story in telecom, healthcare, etc etc

padmanabhan01··on ITwinge: iPhone dream keyboard?
This is the worst idea I have ever heard in my life!
padmanabhan01··on SAT Scores and Family Income: The least surprising correlation of all time
There is huge difference between saying

1. Smart parents -> Give their kids more exposure -> More Exposure and guidance make the kids smart

2. Smart parents -> kids inherit their smartness.

Greg was talking about genes , or case 2, and not case 1. which is what I think is unsubstantiated.

padmanabhan01··on SAT Scores and Family Income: The least surprising correlation of all time
wth. If I read that right, he just stated that intelligence is something inherited.
padmanabhan01··on Apple finally enters the world’s biggest mobile market: China
I am just curious to see the ones that are better than the iPhone. Care to post any links to them?
padmanabhan01··on RIP tr.im (So that's how it ends)
How does Apple belong to that group? They (also) sell hardware and people pay for them. Unlike url shorteners or twitter etc..
padmanabhan01··on Student sues Amazon after Kindle eats his homework
what if one of his class mate had thrown away his homework notebook. Would he be still be able to sue the other kid? Courts aren't setup to deal with this kind of issues.
