pacificleo11··on How Stripe's COO approaches company-building [audio]
importance of thinking through whether to have your company organized functionally or around business can't be overstated. Functional orientation makes lack of accountability and can lead to bureaucratic culture and Business orientation can lead to silos and coordination failure.
pacificleo11··on AWS Public Datasets
Importance of data for machine learning algorithms can’t be stressed enough. I remember talking to a friend in Google Translate team. they had a good also but they were struggling to get quality translation data to train their service. the problem was more severe when it came to language which was not very popular. translation set was next to nothing for Say something like Turkish, Hindi, Latvian etc.

They finally solved this by using meeting notes from UN Assembly. Which were transcribed by best of the translators? that access to meeting transcription was (unfair ??) advantage Google had over other tools. Was it wrong ? I don’t think so. Should have been those meeting notes be public: Yes

Nice idea . I think you should make it more generic. I am confident that We will see a lot of this "Twitch of X " in years to come. I personally would like to see Twitch of Cooking and Twitch of Uber Rides

pacificleo11··on UK government should give £10K to every citizen under 55, a report suggests
One aspect of Universal Basic Income (UBI) debate which remain unanswered for me is the question of meaning & purpose. Most of us derive our sense of purpose from our jobs. In a future with UBI and Automation where will derive our purpose in life. I think this will dictate the future of UBI more than the intrinsic merit of the underlying idea.

pacificleo11··on In Praise of Theory in Design Research: How Levi-Strauss Redefined Workflow
Good to be talking to you. Thanks for intresting post. I am wondering if you have studied "juggad" philosophy in india. We practice bricoleurs in every sphere of life.
pacificleo11··on In Praise of Theory in Design Research: How Levi-Strauss Redefined Workflow
In India we call bricoleurs as "juggad" and people have overused this idea and made it excuse for not thinking through. Championing this idea is a slippery slope
pacificleo11··on A Neuroscientist Explores the “Sanskrit Effect”
From the article "Our study was a first foray into imaging the brains of professionally trained Sanskrit pandits in India. Although this initial research, focused on intergroup comparison of brain structure, could not directly address the Sanskrit effect question (that requires detailed functional studies with cross-language memorization comparisons, for which we are currently seeking funding)," Is it just me who thinks that this disclaimer negate whole point of research ?

pacificleo11··on Show HN: Cornea AI – Using Deep Learning to Predict Photo Popularity
Very interesting. Can you please talk about the algorithm you use to predict the popularity score .
pacificleo11··on Ask HN: What mistakes in your experience does management keep making?
"In my experience, the 10x programmer is a bit of a myth. "

I think it depends on Industry / Role. A creative person in Advertisment or a good chip design engineer or someone great with Algorithm are often worthy of 10 or 20X compensation. Whats wrong is that many people think 10X guys can exist on Application layer / Front end. I think its very hard to do that

pacificleo11··on Show/Ask HN: Anonymous Global Product Manager Salary List
either contributor to this file are exclusively outliers or everyone I know is underpaid .
pacificleo11··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
"The right way to fix the imbalance is to increase the supply of white onions. "

I agree with your point but economist will say that increasing the demand will be a better technique. Supply side will take care of itself. Affirmative actions are usually intended to create an artificial spike in demand for the purpose of greater good. How effective they are is a different matter altogether.

Not a day goes by when i don't see a uber story on HN .
pacificleo11··on Uber's experiment in behavioral science to subtly entice drivers
Agree with you 100%. This is hardly manipulative, not in the way the author is making out it to be. @ any rate this is not first time that its happening . Ford motors used to turn back clocks on shop floor to steal extra hal an hour of unpaid time.
pacificleo11··on Uber's experiment in behavioral science to subtly entice drivers
Edge case
pacificleo11··on Uber's experiment in behavioral science to subtly entice drivers
"In the case of a 97% vs. 3% battery, the call should be exactly as it is currently. Who is going to be the more lucrative for the driver."

Well, I disagree. I think they should optimize for Life Time Value (LTV) of Customer. So If a customer (with 3% battery level ) has been a uber user for more than say six months and have no history of cancellation and likely to be using it for next six months . He should be given prefrence over the one with less Life time value .
