oxfordmale··on Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics
For equivalent sized vehicles, EVs are heavier, simply because current generation batteries still do not match the energy density of fossil fuels.

There is even discussions to start using concrete for roads to handle the increased weight of EVs.

oxfordmale··on Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account
SeeYouLaterAlligator12345678@gmail.com coming up.

The more companies force this the less valuable data they get out of it. Sure you can email me, I am just opening the account once a month to keep it active.

oxfordmale··on The Tyranny of the Marginal User
Long lasting relationships are based on common values. However, you can have succesful medium term relationships based on common interests and good looks.

OkCupid, in its heydays, indeed managed to match people on common values by asking detailed questions. A lot of modern dating apps are far more focus on looks and common interests.

Yes they look cute, and love rock climbing too, but hate children, and never want any. It will result in a good match in your mid twenties, but likely going to result in irreconcilable differences when you approach 30. Unless of course you both hate children :-)

oxfordmale··on The Tyranny of the Marginal User
Almost all internet algorithms seem to converge around maximising time spend on the app in question. A dating website simply doesn't want to be too effective, as you would lose two customers every successful match. Similar to the approach used in slot machines, you want to give the illusion of winning, but I'm reality only provide moderately succesful matches rather than perfect ones.

Of course there is a human element too. Dating sites give the illusion of choice, and a result a lot of potential matches aren't realised on, as the partner is good looking enough.

oxfordmale··on Whistleblower alleges Booz Allen was overcharging U.S. taxpayers for losses
Lesson learnt....bla bla...selected scape goats disciplined. We promise we won't get caught doing this again....
oxfordmale··on I don’t buy “duplication is cheaper than the wrong abstraction” (2021)
Splitting the abstraction is never cheap and quick, mostly because of politics. With duplicated code you often can assign a single responsible owner to each duplication.

However, once abstracted, the code may suddenly be used by a number of different teams. You will need to get this work on their roadmap, increasing the friction to get this done. In many companies, this will also end up in endless discussions about the new approach.

oxfordmale··on Barnacles could hold key to finding wreckage of Malaysia Airlines MH370
Any new research needs to pinpoint a very small area, otherwise ther will be no political will to investigate. This research will help, but will not be accurate enough to pinpoint an "exact" location.
oxfordmale··on Camera crushes Lidar, claims startup
* A car accelerating fast from your left

* Screeching breaks from the right

* Sounds of a rattling bicycle trying to undertake you

* An approaching emergency vehicle

* Other cars beeping their horn at you

Of course you will confirm such situations visually, but you definitely using hearing in addition to sight.

oxfordmale··on Camera crushes Lidar, claims startup
Humans drive both with their eyes and ears, although Tesla marketing like to state otherwise.

We are perfectly capable combining both inputs and act accordingly. An AI system can easily learn how to combining visual and LIDAR input to make the right decision given the circumstances. In the end it is just a decision tree.

It is also an excellent opportunities to sleep in the dog house for the next few months.

oxfordmale··on Ten killed in private jet crash – Wagner leader Prigozhin 'on passenger list'
Apparently an accidental collision with a missile.

Secret service was photographed in the ground. I am sure they happen to have dental records with them.

oxfordmale··on Ten killed in private jet crash – Wagner leader Prigozhin 'on passenger list'
The pilot must have accidentally left the plane mid-flight. Happens to the best of us.

Update: the latest news is that the plane had an accidental collision with an missile.

oxfordmale··on Tech jobs market normalizing as July unemployment dips
It will take until 2024 for the job market to recover. The ARM IPO will be the first bell weather this year to gauge confidence in the tech sector.
oxfordmale··on Career Advice Nobody Gave Me: Never Ignore a Recruiter (2022)
Apparently I can get $1,000,000 in annual salary.
oxfordmale··on Career Advice Nobody Gave Me: Never Ignore a Recruiter (2022)
Is this written by a recruiter by any chance?

Of course recruiters can be useful, but you need to understand their limitations. They just want to shortlist five candidates to a prospective client, and beyond this, they don't care.

Of course, they can be helpful if you end up on their shortlist. However, I would also recommend applying directly to jobs. Recruiters do not care if the job you are applying will result in working for the devil himself, as long as they get their commission.

oxfordmale··on McKinsey: Yes, you can measure software developer productivity
Planning poker

Step 1: We are going to estimate tasks in imaginary relative units

Step 2: We are now going to use these imaginary units to measure your velocity

Step 3: We are now going to compare your progress in imaginary units to other teams who use a different imaginary units, and complain your underperforming

Then you imaginary unit inflation and before you know everything is an XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXL t shirt size.

oxfordmale··on The Stick of Jan Sloot (2004)
Quantum mechanics makes this impossible. This would require to know the position and speed of each particle precisely and that is in violation of the Heisenberg principle.
oxfordmale··on Finland provides housing and counseling to the homeless (2020)
In the US, a lot of homeless people are likely in prison. There is also a second class of people who live on the streets during thr week(San Francisco), but then travel back to their home for the weekend

The Japanese do have homelessness problem, they are just not recorded. Knowing Japan, it is something bureaucratic. Unless you register yourself as living in the street, it is assumed you live on your last known adress. And you likely can't register yourself as living on the street as that is illegal.

oxfordmale··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
I think the 42% is over inflated. Of course it takes more than just hosting Wikipedia, but the 42% likely includes a lot of vanity projects that are not needed to keep the website operational longterm.
oxfordmale··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
It comes from the Wikimedia Foundation.

oxfordmale··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
Only 42% of donations go to Wikipedia and related websites. There is no breakdown for this, and there are likely some vanity projects that are not needed (they mention data analytics)
oxfordmale··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
Only 42% of donations are used to maintaining Wikipedia and it's related sites.
oxfordmale··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
My donations to the Wikipedia foundation should solely be used to support the Wikipedia platform.

I make donations to many different charities, but I do my own due diligence, in particular how much money actually goes to the cause in question, rather gets used to pay an expensive C-suite.

oxfordmale··on Former VP Claims Salesforce Lied About Software Capabilities: 'It Was All a Lie'
Storage in Salesforce is super expensive. And as you said any of their acquired products barely integrate with Salesforce.

Salesforce success is reliant on lack of serious competition. Beyond that it is decades behind modern software engineering practices.

Do you seriously need a third party tool to back up the data in a SaaS application? Astonishing!

oxfordmale··on Former VP Claims Salesforce Lied About Software Capabilities: 'It Was All a Lie'
The Salesforce-arati are out in force, I see. I don't know the context of this story, but I also know you don't make it to CTO of Salesforce by burning a few bridges. Generally, Salesforce has excellent marketing, but technically it has fallen behind in a few areas.

It seems the advertising in question was creative in its language at least. I am sure it is legally all watertight though.

It makes one wonder why this VP complained about this? It is not uncommon in larger organisations to oversell certain product features.

oxfordmale··on Weeds May Be a Better Friend to Pollinating Insects Than We Assume
I mulch and it is perfectly adequate for promoting dandelion growth. I don't have "wild flowers", but plenty of daisies, dandelion and clover.
oxfordmale··on The Importance of Being a Code Reviewer
Code reviews are often the biggest waste of time in most companies. Either there is a culture of "sledgehammer approve", or a culture of nitpicking.

A lot of the feedback provided during code reviews can be provided by coding tools.

oxfordmale··on Compilation of claims/reports of LK-99 replication efforts
It is a discovery of an interesting semi conductor with strong diamagnetism.

It will likely spur a lot of new solid state physics research.
