onetimemanytime··on Ask HN: Why does a busy man build a shed?
24 hours a day. Anyone telling you that you could work 24/7 building a startup or working for someone is lying to you. We are not robots. People need a break, something different to do.
onetimemanytime··on Hospitals still not fully complying with federal price-disclosure rules
does anyone know if they are forced to list complete procedures? example: hernia will cost $4200

or will they be able to list dozens of other charges that may or may not be added to the procedure?

onetimemanytime··on Has anyone else gotten a billion dollar payment from Google Cloud today?
https://wset.com/news/nation-world/bank-transfers-120k-to-wr...

But then maybe you thought that your app really took off :)

onetimemanytime··on Better CEO 'Taking Time Off Effective Immediately': Email
The bottom line is the getting fired is, almost always, bad news. Sure delivery matters but if he was announcing a raise, no one would have questioned the manner. So unless he had some major financial aid for the laid off...
onetimemanytime··on Better CEO 'Taking Time Off Effective Immediately': Email
They hoped to do better after firing them, thus the bonus. One day you're "part of the family," the next...

Anyway, I hope the CEO feels Better

onetimemanytime··on How the FBI Discovered a Real-Life Indiana Jones in Rural Indiana
>>Is there a limit to how many years after one dies that one’s remains or grave can be disturbed?

One gazillion years for a scumbag taking the head to his basement and destroying bones.

Graves can be moved if determined by the government, of course, but with dignity. That is totally different from some jerk deciding to desecrate graves. In a lot of countries that can send the desecrater to his own grave. If the law doesn't act, family will.

onetimemanytime··on How the FBI Discovered a Real-Life Indiana Jones in Rural Indiana
>>Shocked to learn a half century later that I was speaking with the greatest archeological thief of all time.

Worse. Desecrating hundreds of graves to take remains is the one thing that cannot be explained or forgiven.

I see Roman coins or Roman era stuff for sale on some FB groups. Frankly, buying them, even if illegal (some countries have laws making anything historical found state property), is not the end of the world provided you don't destroy them.

onetimemanytime··on Apple’s privacy changes hurt Snap and Facebook but benefited Google
>>I have got enough value out of Google search, Gmail and Google docs over the years to make the privacy trade-off worthwhile, personally.

You are assuming that no one else would have provided the same stuff with less intrusion, killing competitors (will come home later to roost) etc.

onetimemanytime··on Feds order Google to track people searching certain names or details
you can fight until the case is still in the courts. Then, it is over. That's what I meant.
onetimemanytime··on Feds order Google to track people searching certain names or details
>> Maybe the correct response to unconstitutional, secret warrants is to refuse to comply, maybe even refuse to respond?

Ummmm, no. Correct response is courts and then comply. Pichai would lose his job in a minute.

onetimemanytime··on Billionaire Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Reappears in Hong Kong
Maybe he hasn't been in public due to working 996 https://edition.cnn.com/2019/04/15/business/jack-ma-996-chin... ?

Ma etc have bought properties and have cash /shares stashed outside China, I'm sure. But deciding to pull the trigger is tricky.

If he gets caught, he's dead. He's probably being tailed by secret services, maybe even his inner circle reports on him.

onetimemanytime··on Google Is Scrapping Its Plan to Offer Bank Accounts to Users
"Dear John Q, your Gbank account and cards linked to it, have been frozen due to un-Googley activity.

The appeal you are thinking of submitting has also been proactively denied.

Enjoy your vacation."

onetimemanytime··on Alexa, Ring, and Astro: Where's My Privacy, Amazon?
>>Alexa, Ring, and Astro: Where's My Privacy, Amazon?

Who forced you to buy them? End of the story.

onetimemanytime··on The Martians of Budapest
Most likely their mom's husband was "daddy" and they were raised like their half-siblings, as peasants.
onetimemanytime··on The Martians of Budapest
In practice I'd say that a lot of priests did father children. Made of flesh and blood...
onetimemanytime··on Stripe banned us for payment disputes but we never had a single dispute
OK, but how do you explain the appeal?

Hire people to manually review final appeals, maybe you've gone too far and are not hiring to keep up with user growth.

onetimemanytime··on Google to pay Apple $15B to remain default Safari search engine in 2021
>>The first 90% of maps (or search) is easy. It's the 2nd and 3rd and 10th 90% that sucks up all the time.

OK, let's look at it differently: was Apple smart to do Maps or not? Think of pros and cons and we know money means nothing. Apple has so much money they can spend $20 Billion in a quarter on it/them if they wanted.

They could do the same with a "good enough" SE and then let the heavy users set Google as default. Did they lose any users from Apple Maps?

onetimemanytime··on Google to pay Apple $15B to remain default Safari search engine in 2021
Shouldn't this be illegal? Google already has a huge market share yet they using profits to keep /expand market share.
onetimemanytime··on 'Havana syndrome'-like mystery illness affects Vienna US diplomats
I have another theory: maybe they're using a certain tech to steal classified info remotely and we're seeing the side effects. I seriously doubt that Russians will hurt US "diplomats" on purpose....payback and all.
onetimemanytime··on No, billionaires won’t “escape” to space while the world burns
True, but then they have Plans through Z as it costs them next to nothing to be prepared for all scenarios. Money is worth nothing if you die.
onetimemanytime··on Haiti’s President Is Assassinated
Poor country but still a LOT of money to be made for certain elements. Probable someone paid a hit squad to do the deed for a reason or another. A lot of people have that kind of money to pay for killings, so that is not an issue. What comes after can be...

Someone that follows Haitian politics could tell us the power struggle inside the country.

onetimemanytime··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
All is OK, until they take a closer look (and IRS, I assume will now)
onetimemanytime··on DraftKings: a $21B SPAC betting it can hide its black market operations
EU has poured HUNDREDS of billions in Eastern EU. Corruption there is more honest than in USA: no government contract unless you kickback xx%. Then think of the public land thefts, tones and tones of drugs and you get the idea. That money has to be laundered in industrial size machines.
onetimemanytime··on Most hospitals aren't complying with price transparency rule
>>So I went home and wrote them a check for $1,500, marked as paid in full, with a cover letter explaining my side of it. It worked. They cashed the check and I never heard another word

I hope it ends as you say (think of collection agencies)

onetimemanytime··on DOJ seizes $2.3M in cryptocurrency paid to the ransomware extortionists Darkside
They might be saving for bigger things, however this is a lot more than $3million. It's about holding the US economy hostage, as these will increase in frequency.
onetimemanytime··on TSMC looks to double down on U.S. chip factories as talks in Europe falter
OK, in theory you are right. But I doubt the average citizen lost from that. Did those guys win elections or just stole them /took power by gun to loot the country?
onetimemanytime··on DarkSide ransomware gang quits after servers, Bitcoin stash seized
Very few doubt that FSB and Russian mafia are one.
onetimemanytime··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
That's the same as "The cocaine was in my left pocket your honor. See I have nothing in my right pocket :)"
onetimemanytime··on New UK Law Mandates Organ Donation by Default Unless Explicit Opt-Out (2020)
The government has many ways of getting consent, as you said: driver's licenses, passports, tax, any other interaction with the state...or even mailing a separate form to each and everyone complete with a media campaign.

I am no fan of opt out since with the right opt-in they could get enough.

onetimemanytime··on Brian Armstrong sold $291.8M in Coinbase shares on opening day
well, he is an owner and he has paid his dues.
