okasaki··on Dual-screen laptops make more sense with this spiral notebook-like hinge
Framework is 4:2.666.
okasaki··on Dual-screen laptops make more sense with this spiral notebook-like hinge
I would rather have one 4:3 display than two 16:9 displays awkwardly stacked.
okasaki··on Dutch DPA fines Uber €290M because of transfers of drivers’ data to the US
Meanwhile the UK handed all of its patient medical records to Palantir.
okasaki··on My IRC client runs on Kubernetes
You can do that in a container, no need for a VM.

    docker run -itd ubuntu:24.04
    ...
    docker exec -it df36 /bin/bash
    ...
    root@df365a3d2257:/# apt update

okasaki··on China's manufacturers are going broke
It feels like The Economist and other Western oligarch media have been saying that China is going to collapse "next week" for decades. Almost like they have some sort of anti-reality agenda.
okasaki··on Google removed Organic Maps from the Play Store
Though G maps works in a browser, so you don't necessarily need a phone with google services running.
okasaki··on Kioxia Demonstrates Raid Offload Scheme for NVMe Drives
You would now typically use a distributed system for redundancy. Then you don't necessarily need RAID.
okasaki··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
At the expense of absolutely massive, gargantuan, entire-OS-sized binaries.

Just looking at my bin/ folder eg

    k9salpha - a relatively simple curses app - 56MB
    argocd - a cli for magaging argocd - 155MB
okasaki··on There's Just One Problem: AI Isn't Intelligent
How are humans intelligent? Point me to the intelligence?

Literally they're just meat. Sensory inputs in, electrical signals out.

okasaki··on Elliott says Nvidia is in a 'bubble' and AI is 'overhyped'
> The claim that AI products will never work might be valid.

Doesn't look very valid from my perspective, having used ChatGPT almost every day for more than a year.

okasaki··on This Month in Ladybird: July 2024
Chrome and Firefox are privacy nightmares and everyone knows it.
okasaki··on This Month in Ladybird: July 2024
Not true. Firefox rose out of the ashes of Netscape pretty much by word of mouth and nerds installing it on other people's PCs.

Another world is possible.

okasaki··on The US fiscal mess: Some unpleasant fiscal simulations
Why would it matter what the original definition was?
okasaki··on Plan 9 is a uniquely complete operating system
The dynamic and metaprogramming parts of Python can get pretty complicated, especially when it's done in a large program/library like SQLAlchemy.
okasaki··on Weight-loss drugs are causing people to spend less at the grocery store: study
Presumably they meant segue, not Segway.
okasaki··on Weight-loss drugs are causing people to spend less at the grocery store: study
We might imagine a future where US and UK grocery stores aren't 3/4 alcohol and junk food.
okasaki··on Retired Astronaut Admits Boeing's Starliner Has Trapped Crew in Space
It's not particularly similar. I've never been employed by the Hacker News community and haven't received any formal Hacker News training or education, other than dang telling me to stop shitposting.
okasaki··on Retired Astronaut Admits Boeing's Starliner Has Trapped Crew in Space
I read it as "admits on behalf of the space industry community", not that he/she was personally lying before.
okasaki··on AOC's Deepfake AI Porn Bill Unanimously Passes the Senate
A body and an image of a body are two totally separate things.
okasaki··on Nokia 6600 vs. Samsung S24 Ultra
I needed an app recently to interact with the UK govt.

The alternative was to send them my passport in the post (which obviously I'm not doing.)

okasaki··on Europe's new heavy-lift rocket, Ariane 6, made its inaugural flight
What's strategic about it?

We give all of our data to US companies and that's ok (?), but for some reason we need to be able to launch our own rockets?

okasaki··on Dark mode is not as good for your eyes as you believe
You don't need eye-blazing contrast in low light. If you try it your eyes will adjust.
okasaki··on Dark mode is not as good for your eyes as you believe
Turn the monitor brightness down.

I have it set to 5/100 and there's no problem using light mode all day and night.

okasaki··on Why privacy is important, and having "nothing to hide" is irrelevant (2016)
Privacy also allows rich people to hide their wealth and avoid taxes, it allows secret government agencies and other powerful organizations to publish anonymously and influence public life in illegitimate ways, and other bad things. Finally, privacy is inherently anti-"information wants to be free".
okasaki··on The Cheapest NAS
If you need to add storage to just one computer (at a time), consider just getting a hard drive enclosure. It's much simpler, cheaper, more secure, and faster than a NAS.

You can turn it into a NAS at any time by adding a mini pc or similar.

okasaki··on Getting Your DBA Teams Scripts into Git
Have you ever seen a book about a Windows app? 1200 pages, 1000 of them screenshots.

An insane way to do computing.

okasaki··on What I've learned about open source community over 30 years
They monetize your data.
okasaki··on Ladybird Web Browser becomes a non-profit with $1M from GitHub Founder
I'm not sure Mozilla is a good case for a lean software project.

If they didn't give their CEO $7M per year, spent money acquiring businesses like Pocket, gave up their braindead attempts at monetizing user data while simultaneously running bizarre tone-deaf "free internet" studies, and just focused on the browser and improving the development experience (is there a worse open source project than Moz??), they might fare better.

okasaki··on Writing GUI apps for Windows is painful
> Problem: When linking dynamically, there are a myriad of different .dlls required to run the app, totaling over 40MB.

Is 40MB a lot nowadays? Eg the argocd cli is 155MB, and that's just a relatively simple cli app that as far as I know just calls a remote api.

Welcome to bloatworld I guess.

okasaki··on Claude Sonnet 3.5 – The New Benchmark in Conversational AI
I think that's part of the joke?
