offtop5··on Writing books is not really a good idea
I've actually seen a boon in interactive fiction.

Maybe authors can pivot to that. But I fear with the very low barrier to entry, most creatives won't be making money.

offtop5··on Automatically transcribe an interview, meeting or video
That's a great point, but I'm seeing an absolute explosion of transcription services which are all essentially based on AWS.

The only real innovation here is when this is combined with language learning apps to help me practice my Chinese pronunciation, but even then I know I'll have to look to hire a tutor soon.

offtop5··on Sony Warns Tight Playstation 5 Supply to Extend into Next Year
At least on the Xbox side, I've noticed Microsoft is doing everything they can to passively discourage PC owners from buying an Xbox.

Game pass, to my pleasant surprise offers tons of PC games to download, on top of that you can cloud stream directly to your browser or to your Android device. The quality here is absurdly high. I think Microsoft is essentially testing this cloud technology on video games, before they tackle the Enterprise. Uptime requirements for a video game are absurdly low, no one's losing money if they can't play Halo for couple of days.

There are a handful of games which are console only , mostly older titles but it hasn't bothered me all that much.

offtop5··on Automatically transcribe an interview, meeting or video
Considering the AWS API is essentially open for everyone to start a transcription service, what exactly is the difference here. If you know what you're doing you can build this in about 4 hours.
offtop5··on Ask HN: Who Is Looking for Investors?
Hiring 2 full time developers and 2 full time artists.

Have them add online play, and better art. Right now it clearly looks like an indie hobbyist game.

offtop5··on Jeff Bezos' Amazon product reviews
Kinda sad that he stopped.

I'm imagine a young Jeff looking for a SciFi novel, not finding it anywhere and then coming up with the idea for Amazon.

offtop5··on Ask HN: Who Is Looking for Investors?
I'd like to get a bit of investment for one of my games, but I honestly don't imagine this would happen.

And from what I can see, most video game publishers will give you a relatively small amount of money but then expect you to do tons of work to get games up to their standards.

A part of me just wants to upload it up on Itch IO and let a handful of friends play it. Another part of me once the somehow connect with an angel publisher which would give me $500,000 or so to finish the project to my vision.

offtop5··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
>I do agree that California is currently a raw deal for anybody not in a high-paying career.

Even if you make 6 figures it's a horrible place. I was and essentially living paycheck to paycheck.

offtop5··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
The other thing to remember is you generally expect population growth. Even if the decline isn't significant, it means theirs no growth.

This is a good thing. California is a horrible horrible place for most working class people. You will never get ahead.

offtop5··on US Unemployment jumps to 6.1% as only 1/4 of the expected jobs were added
Expect more of a push to get remote workers back in the office. So many people work at cafes, bars, restaurants which mainly serve people leaving the office.
offtop5··on Apple Exec: We Feature Competitors' Apps 'All the Time' on the App Store
They do but they don't. Audible is crippled since you can't do cash purchases. You have some bizarro work around where you need an Android device or a computer to buy your book.

That's said I completely support Apple doing this, Android is still the wild wild West of things randomly not working and iOS is usually pleasant.

offtop5··on Anime2Sketch: A sketch extractor for illustration, anime art, manga
Is there any way for someone to post a Google collab notebook with this.

I think this would be pretty cool if it would support any picture or video.

offtop5··on Clubhouse downloads are falling
They don't.

Anxiety is though the roof. I don't waste time arguing about this, but I don't use social media / online dating. It wasn't good for me emotionally.

I've still done very well meeting people.

offtop5··on Clubhouse downloads are falling
This is how all social media apps eventually work.

Apps know you get an endorphin rush every time a notification comes. Even if the notification doesn't show anything relevant, it MIGHT be important so you hurry to open it.

I had to quit these apps over this, maybe some people are able to handle constant meaningless stimulation, but I can't.

offtop5··on Is this what enterprise means?
Yeah but good luck returning something from AliExpress.

I'm more into getting the stuff I want fast, and making sure it does what I want.

offtop5··on Is this what enterprise means?
The short answer is as a single person with a significant amount of expendable income, I buy a lot of toys. The long answer is I buy almost everything except for food off of Amazon. Need a couch, get it off Amazon, want a shiny new video game controller, Amazon, clothing, Amazon.

Now to be fair, 1,500 might be more of an outlier month, with the average month being closer to 900 or 800$.

offtop5··on Motorcycle airbag vest will stop working if you miss a payment
Why isn't this illegal ?

You can forget to update your credit card number and end up dieing ?

offtop5··on Is this what enterprise means?
Amazon's entire customer service philosophy is basically will give you store credit out of good will.

For example I once couldn't figure out how to build a table right, and I hopped on the phone with their customer service department and they refund it half of the price of the table. The same thing happened where I had a monitor which 8 months after I purchased it started having problems, they just refunded half the price.

I'm pretty sure this only works for me because I spend at least $1,500 a month via Amazon, but even then it's business genius to operate like this. Many retailers would rather leave you out to dry, for example I purchased some shoes found they didn't fit and I was shocked when I simply couldn't return them. Guess I'll never go to that store again.

offtop5··on Peloton recalling all treadmills after reports of injuries, one death
Any reason why they didn't just buy a treadmill, add their IOT stuff on top and ship it ?

This seems like a really silly design choice

offtop5··on New book contends that Catch Me If You Can is mostly made up
In Art of Not giving a F** he quits the one real job he's ever had after 6 weeks.

That's only possible if you are born into money. Even then he avoids giving out concrete advice. If I'm going to spend 20$ on a book I might as well read one by a billionaire.

offtop5··on New book contends that Catch Me If You Can is mostly made up
The most successful lifestyle/dating coach Mark Manson often glosses over him being born into wealth.

It's very easy to Not Give a F** when you've always had rich parents to support you. As if your known to come from money you'll have no shortage of people who want to get to know you.

It's all trash anyway. The only thing that fixed my dating life was dropping 70 pounds in my 20s. Also fixed my blood sugar! Without the chronic back pain I'm happier too.

This was very hard though and took 6 months or so. I doubt ' Fix your life in 6 to 12 months by making hard choices ' would sell all that well. These books offer quick fixes which aren't practical.

offtop5··on Snapchat Can Be Sued for Role in Fatal Car Crash, Court Rules
My gut reaction was to say 'No if social media makes you do something stupid, that's your fault'

But a speed filter , which outright encourages breaking traffic laws is a whole different story. Who ever greenlit this trash needs to be put in jail.

offtop5··on New book contends that Catch Me If You Can is mostly made up
Get rich advisors, life style coaches, dating coaches.

I don't really have respect for people who haven't actually accomplished anything aside from a grift. I do read books like Principals by Ray Dalio or I Love Capitalism! by Ken Langone.

offtop5··on Please fix the AWS free tier before somebody gets hurt
Ya know at 20 theirs's a ton of very bad mistakes one can make.

Something that can be resolved via getting in contact with AWS isn't one of them. I've gotten charges refunded before.

offtop5··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
>he is cheap with his money

Exactly, anyone I'm with needs to understand the difference between my money and their money. I've had no problem dating plenty of fantastic girls who have their own careers( real life only and I tend to date a few years older ). That's by far my number one priority when meeting someone, have your own life together first.

$10,000 was a random number, maybe the pre-marriage emergency fund needs to be $50,000, 100,000 ? In my mind having that money saved up says when life happens, and life will happen you'll be okay.

offtop5··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
It also factors into how someone grew up.

I'd rather toss 10k into a couple emergency fund then waste it on a ring. Most marriages collapse due to money. I recall in my younger days I was with a girl and she dragged me to Brooks Brothers. As a child of poverty and evictions I couldn't understand why anyone who need to spend this much money on a shirt.

Even making well into the 6 figures I shop at Old Navy. Hell, my favorite partner thus far was making 200k or so, and she still used an IPhone 6.

Maybe whenever I meet someone new I'll ask on the first date, would you rather have 10k saved in an emergency fund or a shinny conflict rock ? Her response will tell me everything I need to know.

offtop5··on Jay-Z completes sale of Tidal to Jack Dorsey’s Square for reported $350M
>Jay-Z’s deal to sell his streaming service Tidal to Jack Dorsey’s financial services company Square has reportedly closed at $350 million.

Square announced the deal back in March, saying it expected to pay $297 million in a mix of cash and stock for an undisclosed majority ownership stake in Tidal, which Jay-Z and a group of other artists acquired for $56 million in 2015

Obviously Jay Z was uniquely positioned to do this, but what a good exit.

offtop5··on Ask HN: Any Evidence Against IQ?
I'm of the belief absolute IQ doesn't really matter. If someone's lazy they're going to be lazy, and at least in times past a relatively low IQ person could still make a life for him or herself. It doesn't really matter if you're a super genius if the only job you can find is sweeping up dog droppings. There's some quote which speaks of brilliant minds toiling away in factories.

Then again, the factory worker should be able to own his or her own home. Unskilled labor is still important

offtop5··on The compiler will optimize that away
Back in the real world the best code is code that ships.

Occasionally I find myself doing something stupid ( if you use Unity and try to do advance distance calculation in Update your going to have a bad time ) , but usually I never have to optimize. Modern computers might as well be magic

offtop5··on Ask HN: Jira Alternatives?
I really like pivotal tracker, I'm using Asana right now for my personal project.

I'd go with whatever's easy. Issue tracking which is too rigid ends up being a burden
