odshoifsdhfs··on Uber recognises a union for the first time
Society chooses that. You don't live alone but in a group.

What if I, as a boss, only want to promote women that have sex with me? What if I as a hiring manager don't want to hire black people? What if I as a teenager accept to work for a dollar an hour with 2x unpaid overtime? Why should I even pay taxes to support social programs? All these are against my 'freedom'

There is a big big big difference in power between Uber(others) and individuals, and just because someone small minority of people will have their 'freedoms' trampled, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't do what is best for society at large.

odshoifsdhfs··on For soccer players, the less brain they use, the better for penalty kicks
They usually step forward, and not a true split step. The thing is, if you watch slow motion of penalty kicks (and I remember there was some kind of study) goalkeepers actually have to start moving before the player kicks the ball or it is pretty much impossible to reach most balls (except the ones to the center). You can see they move forward with one leg (sometimes by more than one meter) with the decision of which side already taken.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ryanair’s statement on diversion to Minsk Airport
I used to live before near Malaga, but they didn't at the time (I think now they do) Malaga->Porto direct flights. it was a shame
odshoifsdhfs··on Ryanair’s statement on diversion to Minsk Airport
While I know in other countries it isn't like this, here Faro/Porto is the same airports that Qatar/Tap/SwissAir, so it isn't a difference at all.

I never travel with baggage. Even in not cheap airlines, this add 30+ minutes for checkin and pick up also

I gave examples for Portugal. All these I did a lot. I used to travel Porto->faro and back many times a week (work in one place, my son in another). There is no real option here unless you are a full anti-flight person. I took the train down to faro last week but only because I wanted to do a training and times werent compatible, otherwise I would have flown, there isn't even a comparision here

odshoifsdhfs··on Ryanair’s statement on diversion to Minsk Airport
Out of curiosity, do you know her nationality?
odshoifsdhfs··on Ryanair’s statement on diversion to Minsk Airport
Let's see, will fly with them tomorrow. Faro->Porto (550km). 9.95 euros. 50 minutes flight

Train-> 6 hours, which is usually 7+ due to delays (last one I did in December was 7.20 making me late for a training) and costs 39 euros (20 if I buy 1 month in advance)

National airline -> No direct flight, need to fly to Lisbon and then Porto, total around 4-5 hours (two flights + layover), 80+ euros last time I checked. Service exactly the same (last time I used them, not even a glass of water was offered due to short fly times)

Car -> 5 or so hours, around 100 euros taking in account tolls + gas (is ok if 2+ people are doing the trip though)

Yeah, I will take the short sitting space (fuck, I would even stand in this route if needed, I have had longer train rides where I had to stand).

odshoifsdhfs··on The digital natives are not who you think they are
Not sure what a TRS-80 is as I don't think we had them here, but I had an old Spectrum and did the same :)

But there are tools on mobile/web to create those things also. I've been researching and trying to get something that is intuitive to work on tables to program web apps (it started web based, but now moving it to mobile as I think it matches the visual paradigm better).

There are various tools for kids to learn to program creating games (Scratch is probably the most well known) but other visual programming apps also.

odshoifsdhfs··on The digital natives are not who you think they are
Yeah except new cars you don't have access to the battery (they are starting to make the engine 'protected') and even changing a tire is more rare as many manufacturers are shipping a repair kit vs a spare wheel. Most also have roadside assistance (or your insurance has) which makes it easier.

Most people want a car to go from A to B, many times, if every few years (I only had a blown tire in 20 years driving) they have to call someone to help them, it makes much more sense than spend the time to learn how to do it themselves. Same with computers, they don't want to know how the bytes get into ram, they want to play Doom or write a school paper. There is no need for them to learn all that.

odshoifsdhfs··on The digital natives are not who you think they are
I think this is because you are thinking as a programmer/something.

Folks now have web page editors in their phones/tablets. Drawing apps, etc.

When I was 16, yeah, I want to make a webpage about WWE/F, so I had to spend days learning table based layouts and how to ftp files to a server (and find one).

Now I (my son) can open his phone and he has various tools to do so. He can share/post pictures of someone doing a full nelson and write about it, and get it up on the web in minutes vs days.

Just because he didn't have to learn 45 different incantations at the command line, doesn't mean he isn't creative, he just doesn't need to slog through programming to do it. (He is learning python though)

Think about it as frameworks, when we started, we needed to learn it all to make any kind of decent page, now most folks here would use bootstrap/material ui/whatever, or react/rails vs writing all the css by hand, fighting with all the problems it brings, configure perl scripts to be able to send an email from it, etc etc.

odshoifsdhfs··on Why do we buy into the 'cult' of overwork?
Good thing we have laws to prevent this then. Same with minimum wage, minimum wage, work place safety and so on.

Just because you think there is no pressure to reply, doesn't mean there isn't a societal/workplace culture that pushes people to do so when their superiors ask for something. Same reason you can tell a co-work something is dumb, but you would say 'lets look it from another angle' to a manager or ceo.

odshoifsdhfs··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
I'm am not American, and I do not live there.

Let me tell you why I call this fanfare (in my country, I won't chime in on other countries issues).

During the pandemic, we had BLM marches, politicians virtue signalling, people hating on the police ("The only good cop is a dead cop" signs during those marches), etc. Do we have racist police? For sure. Do we have a PROBLEM with the police with black people? Not so much. Yes, there are cases of abuse, but never to the level you see in the USA. The last case I remember was a year and a half ago, where a (white) cop was accused of attacking (punching) a (black) woman for refusing to pay for a bus ticket and not leaving the bus, everyone cried racism. After video from inside the bus was shown, it showed a cop 10 minutes trying to talk her to leave the bus, she kept refusing, he grabbed her arm to take her out, and she started hitting him, bitting him (there were photos released after where his arm looked like he was fighting wolves), using somethign she picked to try to hit his head.

This was a big POLICE=RACISM and whatnot. Proved wrong. But still BLM.

You know what actually happened around and no one cared? 4 Government emigration official beat to death a guy inside their offices. I saw no march. I saw no instagram posts. Why? Well, he was white. I saw no celebreties going on tv to sshow their support. No nothing.

So yes, sorry, I don't want to work in a place where I am supposed to put a BLM tag on my username or whatnot, in a country that doesn't have those problems, and being accused of being a racist because of it. Life is too short to deal with that shit.

odshoifsdhfs··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
Depends

I will be looking and reaching out to them soon. A) they are now looking for a lot of people. B) I fully agree with their idea about apolitical work spaces, and I know a lot of folks that do as well. I have quit jobs due to the BLM fanfare, you are either with us or against us mentality in the workplace where I just wanted to do my job and get paid to do so.

edit: I chose BLM because it was the big thing last year. Not a racist thing, but being 5000km away from all that, and still have people 'demanding' me I wear/use BLM support things was too much.

odshoifsdhfs··on Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
I find this train of thought fascinating.

"I am in the 0.0001% of the people that need 100+Gb ram", so it seems this massive hit of a cpu/laptop, where everyone is raving about it, is not so good when I compare it to what I need that are thousands of a percent of what regular people use.

I'm a developer, I bought the M1 mbp with 8 (yes eight) gb of ram, for testing and was supposed to then be my gf's machine. You know what, almost 6 months in, she still hasn't touched it. I would maybe go for 16gb in the next one, but she will pry it from my cold dead hands before I get a newer model and she can keep this one.

odshoifsdhfs··on Best practices for remote software engineering
I like to separate remote and work from home. Remote is mostly async, timezones aren't that important (I have worked with both +10 and -9 without a problem) etc. Work from home is to try to mimics the office environment but distributed (work hours, daily calls, etc).

And when you mention just one hour timezone difference is a problem, I really do wonder how you deal with flexible work times, or you just expect 9-13, one hour break, 14-18 for everyone? Myself, and many others I know would refuse to work like that (I don't do lunch breaks as I don't have lunch, I prefer to get in late and work late as my brain is mush before 10am, Others that work with me seem to like to start as 7am and leave early)

You seem to want work from home developers to work like part makers in a factory.

odshoifsdhfs··on Belarusian regime’s thugs shut down Imaguru, the country’s key startup hub
Mine has 900 and this is my 3rd or 4th. I'm as western european as possible (literally living in the most western country in europe). My last 5 or so years, most of my social circle has been Ukranian, Belarussian and Russian people. My neighbour here in Portugal is Ukrainian and my family knows her for over 20 or so years.

95%+ of shit I hear about these countries is from US/Western europeans that know little more than what they learned in CoD and some Holliwood movies and making these ideological thoughts. They have good and bad things, good and bad people, but the view from '1st world countries' towards them is silly and it would be even funny if some of these countries and people weren't going through these difficulties

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
> Most hires will take a year to get productive (where they produce more value for the company than they cost).

I never fully understood this. In pretty much any company I worked, if by the end of the month you weren't productive (almost fully independent) you would get the boot. Do companies really expect for new employees to take a year to be consistently productive? In startup land, that is like 2-3 product launches, how the hell companies find the money for this?

odshoifsdhfs··on Peloton cuts back on Apple Watch support
Nothing about your comment per-se, but damn, these company/product names are getting more and more wacky. *Wahoo Kickr Snap* and *Zwift* is something I would only imagine in a cartoon about an imaginary product.
odshoifsdhfs··on Lambda School is a predatory bootcamp that lies about students outcomes
Lets assume that is true, it doesn't mean you need or should use pair programming to learn from your peers. Depending on your style of learning, pair programming may work, a visual presentation may work better, or just typed docs for other people.

Pair programming may have originated in the 70's (depending on source), but there are hundreds of years of research on learning, please don't make the mistake of taking something as gospel.

(and in case you would like to point to apprenticeships in the past, they look nothing like pair programming, as it was mostly a subordinate relationship between master and student)

odshoifsdhfs··on Lambda School is a predatory bootcamp that lies about students outcomes
I wish people would stop saying things like this. Nothing against you, but no, pair programming is not the best way to learn. There are various learning styles and people fall in diverse ways to learn best. I hate visual and social learning. Just doesn't work for me. Youtube videos and pair programming is just the worst thing you can do for me if you want me to retain any information. While some say there is 8, others 4, others 6, (mainly some divide some items in 2 vs 1), people are different and learn in different ways. Heck, just the amount of teaching styles/methods should be a good hint that there is no size fits all when it comes to learning.

odshoifsdhfs··on A third of Covid survivors suffer neurological or mental disorders: study
Can the study result be: "A third of anyone suffer nerological or mental disorders due to the world situation/lockdowns'?

My country just opened a couple things and I have been talking with a lot of friends/coaches/workers. Pretty much every one of them (including myself) have these symptoms, having caught covid or not. I see people that were in general 'happy' feel depressed, run down, see little hope. I see their 'face' changes from pre covid to post covid. The people that lost their jobs.

Not wanting to be pro/against lockdowns, but I believe we will see a long effects of this for years to come.

Maybe it is your model? On mine I press input button, I get a list of options, sorted by if the connected device is on or not, and select. so for me is usually, input button, one touch left, center button. I can also press the input button more times that does the same as the right button
odshoifsdhfs··on Technical interview methods pale in comparison to playing Factorio with someone
I did mention that a one hour tech talk. I don't think you should willie nilly hire anyone just because they are a smooth talker.

Quick example, Hiring a mobile developer: You talk with them, if Android, ask how Kotlin interfaces with the JVM and what they think (good or bad) about type erasure. iOS? Ask/talk a bit about memory management/ARC. Anyone that has experience with these languages/os (unless hiring for very junior position) should have some thoughts and opinions about it. They may say something you don't agree with (ARC is crap because X or Y) but they will know what they are talking about. You can also dig in to know if it is something they read online (ARC is automated reference counting, meaning each 'allocation' increases a ref counter. Ok, that is good, so, why use `autorelease` or `release` and when to use each? etc etc kind of questions)

You can do the same with backend (framework vs libraries) or frontend (react + state libraries) or whatnot, but if in an one hour tech chat with someone, you can't understand if they actually know they can at least code similar to giving them a fizzbuzz or whatnot, it says more about the interviewer than the person being interviewed.

odshoifsdhfs··on Technical interview methods pale in comparison to playing Factorio with someone
What I mean by basing your identity about work is that your personality, your life, your social circles, etc etc is based around work. Is like someone basing their identity on their sexual orientation, or the sports club they support. Their work is their life, almost a cult like following, and use that work for making others part of that circle (think cultural fit shit, about people not wanting to hire/promote people because they don't hang around for friday evening beer social hour, or in a kind of upper management thing, not wanting to hire people that don't play golf)
odshoifsdhfs··on Technical interview methods pale in comparison to playing Factorio with someone
Please don't. Better, I'll remove the please and go JUST DONT FUCKING DO IT.

Hiring is broken because most people hiring aren't good at it and the people working in tech are pretty much idiots (I'm focusing more on SV-startup, 5hour discussion about aeropress, put people down because they chose vim or emacs - people kinds). From 'cultural' fit interviews (who the fuck cares if you are a sikh or an atheist, whiskey drinking or think alcohol is evil? You are hired to do a job, not much more). This 'i have my social life at work, so I want people I can hang out with' shit has got to end. I work remotely for 10+ years and I can see in interviews/meetings the people that seem to base their identity and life around work, and the ones that actually are well rounded people that don't care about which coffee grind size you use on your morning crap of joe.

I have been a professional boxer and dabbled with MMA/Grappling. I can say most things in the article can apply. So.. at the end of the interview just get them in gloves and duke a few rounds? I would be sued out of existence, but for some reason, between take home assignments, 10h whiteboard drilling and whatever the fuck is hip now (leetcode or what not), interviewing is broken because people are idiots. I have been interviewing people for the last 5 years. If in an one hour talk that is semi technical, you can't understand if the person knows what the fuck they are doing or not, then the problem is you, not the whiteboard or the take-home or the paid assignment. Just admit most people interviewing others for technical positions have not fucking clue or training, BUT, hey, they are smart people from Standford or MIT, so 'how hard can it be' and we get the clusterfuck that it is now

odshoifsdhfs··on Nationwide tells 13,000 staff to 'work anywhere'
I have been working from home for about 10 years. I have been a top performer in most companies I worked with, promotions, etc.

My productivity is down this year a lot. And I mean a lot. This is not because of WFH but do to the situation we live in. I think I wrote like 50 lines of code this month. I just can't stand it anymore, being locked inside the house with a computer on. I was WFH pre-pandemic but travelled, surfed, played social sports, went to cafes, beach. I was productive but my life was balanced and nice. Lets not even talk about the home schooling period where I had to be a teacher and full time worker (like many parents).

Now? I hate my life. I just wake up with the desire for it to be night and go to bed and have the day behind me.

I actually think during this pandemic I would be more productive in an office, due to having some kind of normal, getting out of the house, see other people and talk with others. My gf just started a new job this week that required her to go to the office. You can't imagine how much I envy her right now. I wouldn't mind a 50 minute commute or whatnot, just for a sense of going back to normal.

So yeah, I think you are doing a very unscientific 'study' based on the current situation the world if going through.

odshoifsdhfs··on Work events, Zoom Lunches and other forced social activities are driving me nuts
I have been there before.

1) talk with your manager/higher up. Believe it or not, sometimes they understand your point of view. I had a manager admit they were being quite unsensitive to some of my personal hangs during these things

2) if 1 doesn't pan out, depending on how you feel about the company, either quit, or sabotage as much as possible to show how stupid the mandatory activities are. Want to play music? just play some hardcore, cursing music, jesus hating, muslim degrating metal (or whatever) and say it is your jam. Cooking? Just keep saying everything needs more garlic and say any other recipe needs more garlic. GARLIC!!!!! didn't use a full clove? MORE GARLIC!!!!! Fuck... put 3 buds of garlic in everything, including herbal tea. GAAAAARLIC!!

3) Just mute everyone, turn video off and do your thing. That is what I do for most of my 'social meetings' anyway. I go, cook my dinner, walk my dog, and when everyone is saying goodbye, I just throw a 'wave' emoji or something

odshoifsdhfs··on Liberal societies have dangerously low birth rates
It depends on what a vacation is for you.

If it is visit Paris, sit at and outdoor cafe and see the Louvre. Yeah, kids don't mess with your vacation except perhaps cost.

If you want to go to raves until 5 in the morning, do drugs and drink. Yeah, kids are a no no to take.

Then there is the in-between, which depends a lot on the type of kid and activity. One week surfing big waves somewhere, maybe possible if your kid has interest and are other smaller waves around. Impossible (or at least non recommended) if kid is afraid of the water and doesn't know how to swim. etc.

You can always take them, give them an ipad and let them spend 7 days in front of it, but at that point, why take them?

I am divorced but have a kid. Vacations (travelling) are usually split in two (or three). One week with my kid at someplace that is mostly for him (beachs + waterparks + etc). A week with my gf (which can be a mix of things) and then a week for myself (usually snowboarding or surfing somewhere by myself or a group of friends). But I can do this because I am divorced, and I don't have him 100% of the time with me. If I had, I could say goodbye to 'my' week (like I did while I was married).
