ntoskrnl··on Hollywood doesn’t make movies like ‘The Fugitive’ anymore (2018)
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel. That makes me feel angry!
ntoskrnl··on Crypto Is Crashing, But Companies Aren't Acting Like It
TCP/IP is used for ransomware. I hope regulators save us from these criminals!
ntoskrnl··on Ask HN: GPT-3 reveals my full name – can I do anything?
This reminds me of a post I saw on /r/fatfire about how to buy a house anonymously. I have it bookmarked in case my company ever takes off.

ntoskrnl··on Crypto Is Crashing, But Companies Aren't Acting Like It
Crypto has given back its money-printer-fueled gains since 2020. Tech stocks have done the same. Why should one set of companies should be more worried than the other? The market gives, the market takes away.
ntoskrnl··on What Copilot means for open source
"Enter your social security number on our site to check if it's been leaked!"
ntoskrnl··on What is `Box<str>` and how is it different from `String` in Rust?
> why would a primitive container make guarantees about the values it's storing

If you know you have valid UTF-8, you can safely skip bounds checks when decoding a codepoint that spans multiple bytes.

ntoskrnl··on Tell HN: GitHub Copilot can now block suggestions matching public code
You can't access that page or toggle that checkbox unless you pay for Copilot first. This might be the most literal case I've ever seen of "if you're not paying, you're the product"
ntoskrnl··on Metadata is the biggest little problem plaguing the music industry (2019)
> It wasn’t the musician’s fault, but too much time had gone by before anyone noticed. The companies involved declined to pay him.

Isn't this what the legal system is for? If the situation were reversed, I can guarantee they'd sue him for the difference.

ntoskrnl··on Papers on GitHub Copilot, copyright law, and ownership for AI-generated code
The leaked Windows source is actually hosted right on GitHub. I wouldn't be surprised if it was part of Copilot's training set.
ntoskrnl··on Goldman Raising $2B to Buy Distressed Celsius Assets
What 30 years are you referring to?
ntoskrnl··on Crypto firm Bitpanda lays off around 20% of its people
It's unlikely Goldman would spend billions to acquire something with no value. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31870422
ntoskrnl··on Crypto firm Bitpanda lays off around 20% of its people
Why wouldn't they be interested in $billions of assets priced at pennies on the dollar?
ntoskrnl··on Fighting JPEG color banding
I can take a guess at that "proprietary information". Most image optimization sites are just thin wrappers over something like mozjpeg/zopflipng/etc. 1% tech, 99% marketing
ntoskrnl··on On the dangers of cryptocurrencies and the uselessness of blockchain
The earliest documented ransomware dates to 1989. https://ransomware.org/blog/the-first-ransomware-attack-less...

EDIT: Sorry you don't like that history disagrees with your narrative

ntoskrnl··on Tell HN: Coinbase now requires physical address of recipient in crypto transfers
Bitcoin's original design was a public ledger with all transactions publicly visible. That has never changed since the beginning.
ntoskrnl··on Apple is not defending browser engine choice
There's always this: https://xregexp.com/

But it's not really a polyfill, just a library.

ntoskrnl··on Apple is not defending browser engine choice
I second this. I hit a goofy issue recently too: Safari can't select text in text boxes... but only sometimes. What causes it is unclear. Out of this mountain of workarounds, I had to use setTimeout: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3272089/programmatically...

And in Safari there's zero visibility into why things break, they just silently don't work. At least Chrome is pretty good (in my experience) about throwing an exception or at least logging warnings to the console

ntoskrnl··on Schroedinger's streaming service just died
I'm sure people know but have given up since it's hopeless. It doesn't really matter who you vote for. Republicans and democrats alike can be bribed, er, sorry, I meant lobbied. I'd love to be wrong about this. Someone tell me which politician I can vote for to restore the length of copyright back to its original 14 years.
ntoskrnl··on Schroedinger's streaming service just died
I think he's talking about the original copyright law from 1790, back before congress lost the ability to pass productive legislation
ntoskrnl··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
There's also a good amount of commercial and leaked source code on GitHub, including MS's own leaked Windows XP source. I haven't played around with Copilot yet, but if I ever do I plan on copy/pasting some win32 API definitions to see if I can get it to spit out any of the leaked source.
ntoskrnl··on Linus Torvalds: Rust for the Kernel Could Possibly Be Merged for Linux 5.20
> trading language surface complexity and readability for programmer convenience

I would say the question mark improves readability, compared to having to check/return error codes by hand after every function call.

To your more general point, the language is pretty much established and syntax features are added very rarely. I think one more feature, let guards, is coming down the pipe soon, but other than that I wouldn't be surprised if the surface syntax never changes again.

ntoskrnl··on Linus Torvalds: Rust for the Kernel Could Possibly Be Merged for Linux 5.20
It will be tough, but I think Linux will manage to keep limping along even without you.
ntoskrnl··on Linus Torvalds: Rust for the Kernel Could Possibly Be Merged for Linux 5.20
The Linux kernel takes backwards compatibility much more seriously than your typical Python package.
ntoskrnl··on Brooks County TX pays off hacker with tax dollars after ransomware attack
> A recent ransomware attack on Brooks County’s Justice of the Peace and district courts, and finance department, cost it more than $37,000.

> “We had determined if we didn’t, then it would take us anywhere from six months to a year to reconstruct our software program,” Ramos said.

How much would it have cost for 6-12 months of engineer time plus the court system slowing to a crawl in the meantime? Thank god these hackers don't know how to negotiate.

ntoskrnl··on The Grug Brained Developer
His name is grug.
ntoskrnl··on Twitter Notes
> A small group of writers are helping us test Notes. They can be read on and off Twitter, by people in most countries

I guess I'll be the one to ask. Why would you block certain countries from reading notes, but not from viewing tweets?

Also, I thought Twitter wasn't making any major product changes with the looming Musk takeover. Can we assume this means Musk is backing out of the deal?

ntoskrnl··on Experimenting with Rust in Chromium
You're right. I meant to say big projects tend to be conservative with adopting new technologies. I didn't mean to imply anything about development pace.
ntoskrnl··on TerraUSD crash led to vanished savings, shattered dreams
There are ~18000 cryptos, and out of all those, maybe two worth owning. Do I need to go open short positions on 17998 assets before I can tell people "don't buy shitcoins"?
ntoskrnl··on TerraUSD crash led to vanished savings, shattered dreams
I guess I'm talking to whoever was doing the touting. Not that it matters now.
ntoskrnl··on TerraUSD crash led to vanished savings, shattered dreams
> TerraUSD was touted as a blue-chip cryptocurrency.

Let me stop you right there. Terra was a barely 2 year old shitcoin. I don't think you know what "blue-chip" means.
