ntkachov··on Google changes Android content policy; intrusive ads now banned
The only other app store that has any traction on android is the Amazon App Store. Amazon has much more strict policies about what gets into the store and what doesn't.

All of the other app stores don't really have all that many users and if you use them then you probably know how to avoid shady apps.

ntkachov··on Mobile game devs: Middle-aged women are taking over the iPad
Well puzzle games are pretty girly. I mean why do they all have gems? Where is tetris with guns? </sarcasm>

Seriously gaming gender roles are the most sexists things I've ever seen.

ntkachov··on Mobile game devs: Middle-aged women are taking over the iPad
>Female apps lead male apps by a 4:3 ratio in the top 10, and by a 3:1 ratio in the top 5

Since when is 10 games enough to declare any sort of statistical significance? I'm not saying that their claim is false but their data seems wonky.

ntkachov··on In Week Two, Marissa Mayer Googifies Yahoo
Yahoo still has some buying power with serious engineers. I'm not sure what their plan is but cool projects + good perks are usually a sure fire way to get good engineers. I really hope that she turns the place around and makes another Google.
ntkachov··on Patent troll says it owns GPS, sues Foursquare
This is a terrible idea. If you read the AMA from the patent examiner on reddit, he described that an shitty patent passes because, even though its obvious to the examiner, they can't mark it as bad unless there is prior art that they can find. They can't conduct exhaustive searches for these prior arts and if they can't find prior art then they have to validate the patent.

We need to change the system from the ground up. Not start to make liable some poor fella who happens to work at the USPTO who would have no idea that a legitimate patent would cause a multi-million dollar case.

ntkachov··on The Linux Talent Draft is On
There might be something you can do on your end to get better candidates. Usually problems like these stem from either bad (read: boring) work, or faulty recruitment practices.

Bad work can usually be overcome with cash and perks. Unless you're looking at the top 0.01% of devs, you can probably pay people enough that they will overlook bad work.

However, there probably isn't much you can do about changing bad work so double check to make sure that your recruitment practices are more or less in line. If you're hiring outside recruiters, make sure they aren't scaring away top talent. I've gotten emails from recruiters that try something new and crazy and throw up more red flags than they would with a standard "Hi, we would like to talk to you about a position we are trying to fill".

If you feel that both of these are in line, then there could very well be a shortage in your area and I wish you the best of luck.

ntkachov··on The Linux Talent Draft is On
While this may be true it is important to note that the corollary is not necessarily true. That is to say, not having good linux skills doesn't make you bad developer. I've found plenty of people who don't know linux very well and are fantastic developers.

Personally, I'm having trouble living without grep (work is easier on a windows machine).

ntkachov··on Dead Trigger for Android free due to high piracy rates
Pretty simple. You look at how many people are hitting your analytics server vs the reported downloads by Google. That percentage is your piracy rate.
ntkachov··on Amazon Career Choice Program
I'm interning at Amazon at the moment, and I can say that as far as office perks go, they don't have many. But when it comes to the connivence of living, they do far more than I would have ever expected.

For example, I got corporate housed pretty far away from work (hour by bus), Amazon not only payed for a shuttle every morning to work and every night from work, they also reduced my housing costs and offered a rental car for the summer. And this wasn't just to me, every intern that didn't get housed right next to campus got some sort of benefit to make getting to work easier.

They take almost the opposite approach to some places. They assume you'll take care of yourself at work, and then they take care of you outside of work.

ntkachov··on Microsoft explains Windows 8 Store: Free 7-Day Trial, lower pay-cuts and more
This will, however, lower the number of 1 off apps that people need. Sometimes, I need an app to do something that I do once a year. I have no intention of paying $5 for this app and chances are, I'll download it and return it clean within that 7 day period. So if your app is very situational, the MS app store might do more harm than good.
ntkachov··on Women in Tech: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.
Women don't need to be "empowered". It's not some socieo-ecominic reason that's causing girls to steer clear of tech. It's been discussed here before many, many times and women have weighed in. According to them its the culture and insensitivity towards women thats causing skewed gender ratios.

This isn't a problem you can throw money at.

ntkachov··on Fluid: A UI Prototyping Tool
I was looking for an new UI mockup tool, too. Looks like I'll keep looking.
ntkachov··on Whats up with programmers avoiding programming?
There is a difference between having an unwavering passion for ones craft and having an unwavering passion for ones craft between 9am and 5pm.

Sure, your job could also be your hobby but that doesn't mean that your job HAS to be your hobby. I know plenty of engineers who love tinkering with stuff but would rather spend the weekend doing other things and spend time with family and friends.

Edit: I too spend 14 hours a day programming. But I'm working towards a start up. I love what I do and I do enjoy it, but I would much rather spend the weekend hanging out with people if I had the chance.

ntkachov··on At ‘Hacker Hostels,’ Living on the Cheap and Dreaming of Digital Glory
This is true, However you do miss out the on the people. I would guess something like this provides much more support for the participants than a simple 1 bedroom. I feel that being surrounded by like minded people working towards a familiar goal is far more valuable than an apartment.
ntkachov··on Google launches Compute Engine
My guess is that an GCEU is about the same a single core 1.5ghz proc. Slightly more than amazon.
ntkachov··on Cheddar
Out of all the todo apps I've tried. Every time I go back to writing shit on a white board.

I've timed myself. IT takes me about 6 seconds to write something on a whiteboard. And about 10 to take a picture of it with my phone.

Compare that to the 20+ it takes for me to pull out my phone, open an app, get into the list I want, and then type it out on a shitty little keyboard.

Until you make a note taking app that takes less time to use than a white board, I'm gonna use the whiteboard.

ntkachov··on Twitter Completely Down
I like how on status.twitter.com they tell you you might have issues accessing the site. And then they give you a "tweet this" button.
ntkachov··on Engadget Retina Macbook Pro Review
I might not. But at least give me the option to.
ntkachov··on Engadget Retina Macbook Pro Review
The one thing that would make me buy this machine is the screen. But in apples usual "we know better than you" attitude they don't allow you to run the os at native resolution without scaleing. This is a huge deal breaker for me and is the one thing that is turning me off this machine.
ntkachov··on Didn't see this coming: The Goldman Sachs Github Account
I think you missed the "computer" part in "computer programming language". It's there because it needs to be for the JVM. It resolves naming conflicts so that having two "component.java" files in the same project don't end up blowing the whole thing apart.
ntkachov··on GM Says Facebook Ads Don't Work, Pulls $10 Million Account
GM kindof has their work cut out for them on facebook. Most of facebook isn't looking for a new car (maybe a used one) and the facebook moms aren't exactly stoked for GM cars.
ntkachov··on The Coming Meltdown In College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Soon
Most students are crap at math. That's a fact. There is 0 encouragement to spend high school refining math skills.

Also don't confuse motivation with laziness, priorities, or time management. To a psych major, calc might seem like one of those bullshit classes you have to take. To an EE Major it might just be more hours of work that could be spent sleeping.

ntkachov··on The Coming Meltdown In College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Soon
The other end of the problem is that kid's aren't even trying to flip their degree. Most kids consider college and experience not an investment.

You're kid is the worst investor on the planet. Because instead of majoring in Bioengineering they are majoring in psychology. And If they are majoring in psychology they aren't out to get the best damn research positions over the summer and publish papers, they are out working for the local supermarket.

I don't think most students have been asked "What return do you expect on the $100,000 you are going to spend on this degree".

ntkachov··on The Coming Meltdown In College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Soon
Great. They fail at that too. There have been a few studies that show that after 2 years of college, the difference in reading, writing, math, and critical thinking are negligible.

So if you're not good for the industry, you're terrible at what you're made for, what good are you?

ntkachov··on Windows On ARM Users Need Browser Choice Too
The real question is: do users benifit from this in any way?
ntkachov··on Gitspective - Facebook style timeline for your GitHub feed
The zig-zag flow is one of the most obnoxious things i've ever seen in a website. It is one of the worst ways of displaying information ever.

Lets take this to the extream. Lets say you had a serverlog with 1 million entries and you had to parse it by hand for what ever reason. would you rather see

Just because I'm browsing my friends activity doesn't mean that I want to waste time trying to follow their god awful timeline with the jumps and the zig zags and the figureing out what came before what.

ntkachov··on [dead]
Just goes to show you that nothing these days is original. Its just an original combination of old ideas.
ntkachov··on Dell Announces A Linux Laptop Designed For Developers
How about a laptop with a better key board, slim figure, larger special character keys and more feedback for keys?

Then shove a great processor, a mouse pad that's not accidentally click able while typing, and a high resolution screen.

That's a developer laptop. Ill install my own software, Thank you very much.

ntkachov··on Top Things Every Software Engineer Should Know
Python maybe. C# (at least when i used it, 3.0)is basically Java and is very object oriented.
ntkachov··on Dangerous Things You Were Taught In School
Most of these things, I think, stem from the fact that it's much easier to take care of a class that believes in all 9 facts, than to take care of a class that doesn't.

How many teachers could justify the 5 paragraph essay if all the kids started questioning them on the arbitrariness of that number?

If you reward that kid that's really easy for you to take care off the others will follow, right?

Standardized tests measure your value because they measure the teachers value (in paychecks).

I have little respect for the school system. It's basically rigged to make the teachers lives as simple as possible and make the kids as miserable as possible.
