nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Name one SaaS product that you hate, but pay for
Wow talk about a shitty web app. I spend a lot of money on contractors through upwork but the website is so terrible.

Feels like they used bottom barrel developers off their own site.

nkristoffersen··on Load Google Fonts Faster in WordPress
For my projects we end up embedding the fonts with base64. Much more manageable https://amio.github.io/embedded-google-fonts/
nkristoffersen··on Apple resumes selling iPhone SE at lower $249 price on its clearance store
Although I would argue you should not want the matte screen. They get washed out from ambient light and thus have poorer contrast than reflective screens that can reject ambient light (at proper angles).
nkristoffersen··on Android vendors, don’t kill my app
That is the case in iOS. All permissions are optional and the app must gracefully degrade if permissions are denied.
nkristoffersen··on The Phone That’s Failing Apple: iPhone XR
just a quick note regarding speed limiter on cars (which most cars have), this is typically a safety feature to prevent you from exceeding the limit of the factory tires (imagine your tires blowing out at 160mph). Many performance cars can be reprogrammed to remove the speed limit (just do it once you've installed higher performance tires!)

nkristoffersen··on The Firefox Dilemma
Looks like a ton of similar extensions exist for Chrome as well.

nkristoffersen··on Static site generators need less rigid content APIs
The bottom line is flexibility and speed. With Gatsby you get both. Only looking at it as a .txt > .html convertor is very limiting. I generate 1,500 webpages every day from custom datasources with Gatsby. Using React components gives me DRY code. This gives me very great flexibility during development and great SEO and speed in production.
nkristoffersen··on Static site generators need less rigid content APIs
I use Gatsby and then teach clients how to write markdown. Then they edit markdown content in gitlab, once they save (commit), the CI/CD regenerates the website and deploys to S3/Cloudfront.

There are other solutions, such as using wordpress or contentful to provide content and then regenerate the website when something changes. I think the creator of Gatsby is creating something like that as a business.

nkristoffersen··on How to Tell Us a Secret
Markdown renderer?
nkristoffersen··on Announcing Gatsby 2.0.0
I look forward to migrating to 2.0. I use GatsbyJS 1 for many websites. One website I regenerate every morning to build over 1600 pages (https://frekvensapp.com). I’m told 2.0 has much better support for large sites.
nkristoffersen··on Google can track surfing habits without need for HTTP cookies
Agreed. Would love facts on this.
nkristoffersen··on Scaling Your Static Site to a Global Market for a Fraction of the Cost on AWS
I would say because using S3 for static sites costs pennies instead of $20 :-)
nkristoffersen··on Scaling Your Static Site to a Global Market for a Fraction of the Cost on AWS
If you want the updated site to be available immediately then you must invalidate the cache.

I do it as the last step in my CI/CD process:

    - aws configure set preview.cloudfront true
    - aws cloudfront create-invalidation --distribution-id $CLOUDFRONT_ID --paths '/*'
    - curl https://google.com/ping?sitemap=$SITEMAP_URL
nkristoffersen··on Google AMP – A 70% drop in our conversion rate
That does not align with their documentation.

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/guides/mark-up-lis...

The search results you see just put in the effort to provide structured data to google. You can do this easily and without any AMP integrations by simply embedding structured data (such as JSON-LD) on the page.

nkristoffersen··on User banned from Das Keyboard forums for telling people of open-source drivers
I bought a Das keyboard for a friend. A year later with very little use, the keys stopped responding as expected and I was SOL with a shit product and no support from the company. I was disappointed since it was a pricey gift, but lesson learned.
nkristoffersen··on Why don't more men take their wife's surname when they marry?
Iceland has a fun system for last names.

You last name is your fathers (or rarely, your mothers) name plus a 'son' or 'dottir' at the end.

nkristoffersen··on Why No HTTPS?
Read example.com it answers all your questions :-)
nkristoffersen··on Why No HTTPS?
example.com is great for testing http. And it’s owned by IANA and not some rando. No ads either and easy to remember.
nkristoffersen··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
I’m not sure but when I tried using my external mac touchpad on Ubuntu it wouldn’t handle scrolling (two fingers).
nkristoffersen··on How Israel, in Dark of Night, Torched Its Way to Iran’s Nuclear Secrets
Have you seen Netflix? Many many many shows exclusively about murderers :-)
nkristoffersen··on TerminalView – A terminal inside Sublime Text 3
Not supported in all browsers I thought? I recall a browser couldn’t do SVG animations
nkristoffersen··on CeramicSpeed’s Driven Concept Might Become the Most Efficient Bicycle Drivetrain
My grandfather told me about a bicycle he designed that uses a CVT. Curious if that’s a better direction for the future of bicycles.
nkristoffersen··on Juggalos figured out how to beat facial recognition
And IR dot projector.
nkristoffersen··on Van Gogh's sunflowers are wilting as yellow paint fades to brown
Honestly my favorite Jesus. I really want to see it!
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: I am bootstrapping a video-based Duolingo competitor
I’m learning a new language now after moving to a new country and found duolingo was difficult to follow due to the artificial voice.

Memrise has been great though, not only are the voices natural, the app shows a video of a native speaker speaking a new word.

I highly recommend Memrise (so far) for learning a language. The format just clicks for me.

Edit: I will try this out when I get to my computer. Anything to help me learn my new language :-)

nkristoffersen··on OS X is as old as the classic Mac OS was when it came out
I think from Apple's perspective the iPad is the $500-$600 Chromebook competitor suitable for everyone. People have different opinions on the actually usefulness but Apple has been pretty clear saying the iPad is 'the future PC'.

Regarding swift on server, I think this could be fun. Will try it some day https://vapor.codes/

nkristoffersen··on Apple Signs Deal with Volkswagen for Driverless Car
My understanding of the story is Android was nearly completely re-written after the iPhone announcement. The first Android phone was very different from what Google purchased.
nkristoffersen··on Apple faces class action lawsuit over failing MacBook butterfly keyboards
Hopefully Microsoft improves the alleged reliability of the surface book before people start buying it in droves

nkristoffersen··on You can now run Linux apps on Chrome OS
Obviously time and money aren’t the problem. Look at windows phone. Microsoft wasn’t being frugal in marketing
nkristoffersen··on You can now run Linux apps on Chrome OS
And weight is relative to strength and dimensions in this conversation, right? Plastic starts to get pretty large to match strength of aluminum.
