nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
We are working on Gossip: the future of media insights (think Meltwater, Brandwatch, etc).

It’s been a journey but getting close to launching our first version to pilot customers in August. We use an enormous amounts of AI tokens every month to extract data not possible with any traditional player in this media monitoring space. Benchmarking competitors, tracking impactful discussions, and receiving actionable brand insights.

If you are currently using one of the big media monitoring companies, I’d love to chat!

nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Has anyone deployed LLMs to production?
We are using over 50 billion LLM tokens for NLP/classification purposes per month. A mix of self hosted and cloud hosted models. But I have not attempted any fine tuning. Just prompt, (and perhaps more importantly) context “engineering”.
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: FastGraphRAG – Better RAG using good old PageRank
We do a lot of things with podcast and other audio media at https://listenalert.com

But in general we found the best course of action is simply label everything. Because our customers will want those answers and rag won’t really work at the scale of “all podcasts the last 6 months. What is the trend of sentiment Hillary Clinton and what about the top topics and entities mentioned nearby”. So we take a more “brute force” approach :-)

nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
yes, definitely some skin deep similarities! We both transcribe podcasts, but what we do after that is very different ;-) (also, i'm a fan of his podcast).

There is also more generally Mention, Brand24, Meltwater, etc, in the media monitoring space. But all are generally weak in the audio media space.

When we stop looking at audio media like a newspaper article, things get more interesting.

nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm working on a podcast and audio media monitoring and research platform. Easily the most complex thing I've built. But still so much more to do to make it truly useful. Testing PR and public affairs use cases at the moment.

https://listenalert.com

I used to work for a media monitoring company but was instantly struck by how old fashion everything was. And the total reliance on boolean searches meant only experts could find relevant information. This still appears to be the case for most players in the industry.

So I'm building a platform that finds what is important before you look for it. Novel entity linking, and sentiment analysis plus speaker tracking. It has come a long way from the proof of concept. Focused on audio media at the moment as it is the hardest to index compared to news articles in my opinion. And the hypothesis is audio media such as podcasts can contain so many juicy insights.

Next steps are converting pilot customers to paying customers, testing more markets (based in a tiny market now), raise a small pre-seed (bootstrapped at the moment), and quickly evolve the product based on feedback.

nkristoffersen··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
You can actually create multiple widgets of the same type. So as many timezones or cities you want to track you can just keep adding timezone widgets.
nkristoffersen··on New embedding models and API updates
What kind of problems are you facing for entity extraction with 3.5? I am also currently working with 3.5 for entity extraction and entity linking. It is a fun pipeline but curious what issues you ran into?
nkristoffersen··on Sony Tricked DSLR Makers into Thinking Mirrorless Was Not a Threat
What makes you say that?

I can definitely argue that mirrorless is always better for most users! Thinner bodies, modern lens selection (so faster autofocus and wider aperture, etc), real-time image previews, better low-light preview (in both rear and viewfinder screens), video recording capabilities better match professional video cameras (by removing mirror complexity) which better matches the hybrid needs of the modern camera buyer.

isn't "callback hell" a bit old fashioned now? With promises and async/await etc.

nkristoffersen··on iPad Pro M2
Try thinking outside your specific needs. The raw filesystem is an antiquated interface that, honestly, a vast majority of people do not need. In fact, if you observe average computer users, the filesystem is what really impedes their ability to get things done. In fact, the filesystem introduces a huge complexity when the application does not know where its files exist. Did the document you downloaded in the Downloads folder? The Desktop? Documents? Or is it in the last folder you downloaded? Users want to get things done, not hunt for files. The iPad paradigm solves a lot of regular user issues. It was never meant for "power programming users". The car vs. truck analogy.
nkristoffersen··on iPad Pro M2
Best feature not really mentioned is Sidecar! Having a second high quality screen has been a game changer. So portable and so powerful. I will be upgrading my 2018 12.9 iPad Pro to the latest. Mostly for the better screen to match my M1 Max.
nkristoffersen··on The Bulletproof Glass Effect: Unintended Consequences of Privacy Notices
I was so disappointed when USA was going after TikTok instead of codifying proper data protection for all citizens.

Having gone through several GDPR implementation process in Europe, it’s what the citizens of USA need, but not what American companies or government agencies want. So from my perspective, American citizens will never fully be protected. Sadly.

nkristoffersen··on JWT vs. Opaque Tokens
I would imagine it would be a very poor user experience. Especially on mobile, where you jump around 4G/5G/WiFi networks and get a new IP address each time.
nkristoffersen··on On Adobe acquiring Figma
It could be more like freeform is Garageband to Logic. So a Design Pro app could be something in the future... They do seem to continue investing in Final Cut and Logic.
nkristoffersen··on On Adobe acquiring Figma
I don't know. I've been impressed with icloud.com in the past. They didn't need to do that, and yet they build full featured web versions of their office suite.
nkristoffersen··on What VS Code theme do you use?
Dark High Contrast (built in theme). It looks extreme but I love how the editor gets out of the way.
nkristoffersen··on Java Development on an Apple M1 – A One Year Review
We are running gitlab-runner on an M1 Mac Mini now for iOS builds. Runs fine, was a little complicated getting React Native/Fastlane to compile the app but eventually got it running and is creating new builds almost every day. And we are using the Scaleway M1 machine so we can easily do remote management.
nkristoffersen··on Have iPhone cameras become too smart?
Pretty sure camera lenses already contain a ton of information about distortion and chromatic abberation which the camera uses to compensate automatically. But this is generally disabled when shooting RAW.
nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Why is GCP not as used as AWS/Azure?
I had several thousand dollars in GCP credits but eventually moved back to AWS.

Overall I prefer the philosophy of AWS regions vs global infra. So many GCP outages were global. Also AWS seems very keen on customer feedback (if you are big enough at least).

Car makers actually have the same thing. Not on bumpers, but on ignition keys and ECU (and possibly more). You can't swap out the ECU without getting keys reprogrammed by the dealer.

From my understanding: gas in USA is heavily subsidized. The cost of fuel in Europe is more the true cost.

nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: How do solo SaaS founders handle monitoring/PagerDuty?
How often does your server go down? If this is a common occurrence that you are stressed about it, try to solve that first.

My advice will be a little controversial in this thread, but cloud providers are really perfect for building durable products. Any situation you can find where you can trade dollars for durability is well worth the ROI as a solo tech owner. Load balancers, auto scaling, aurora clusters, s3, these are all services that help me sleep like a baby even though my SaaS needs a perfect uptime. Expect instance outages, so keep your servers stateless and run at least 2 instances, as small as possible and go horizontal.

Another good idea is to learn how your product can die. Load test, try to break your app, and then fix those weak spots.

These are my opinions and experiences, and have continued to serve me well.
