nikatwork··on The Plane Giving the F-35 a Run for Its Money
War Is Boring have been running a series of articles over the past year or so about the effectiveness of the A-10 for CAS, and about how the F-35 is a "jack of all trades master of none" compromise that is also terrible at CAS.

They paint a compelling picture that the Air Force is stumping to ditch CAS as "unsexy" so they spin as hard as they can against the A-10.

nikatwork··on The Fake Meat Revolution
Someone please tell India's ~40% of their population of 1.25 billion that they have serious health issues and need to change their diet or they might die.

And no, this is not a poverty issue. I work with some very successful expat Indian developers who are strict vegetarians.

nikatwork··on How fixed-gear bikes can confuse Google’s self-driving cars
Bike lanes often run adjacent to parking spaces. The bike has right of way and is not being a moron. That said, agree with others that a warning is the best option.
nikatwork··on Thirteen Months of Working, Eating, and Sleeping at the Googleplex
It means his partner has different values and needs and they are compromising as part of the relationship. That is highly rational.
nikatwork··on The Software Engineer’s Guide to Negotiating a Raise
I've found that's often a BS management excuse to shift blame. If they really want to keep you, they'll find the money.
nikatwork··on Humanist Interface: The Entrenchment of Modern Minimalism
I have done A/B design testing on ~10 mid-tier "consumer products" eCommerce sites, and giant firetruck-red 3D bevelled "Buy Now" buttons converted insanely better than minimal ones.

Personally, I want clearly-labelled tactile buttons that make me want to push them. Flat UI is more brutalist than humanist.

nikatwork··on The Art of Management
A fascinating thought concept - what if command-driven economies have failed only because the technology was not yet there to support accurate visualization, allocation and communication?

What a loss that the Chilean experiment was never fully realized.

nikatwork··on Why the Sony hack is unlikely to be the work of North Korea
According to the military community, NK/China relations are strained at the moment. In that case I would be surprised if they worked together on such a high-profile hack.

"North Korea is even angrier, and very shaken that a retired Chinese general said publically that China would not come to the aid of the current North Korean government if the government collapses or starts a war. China often makes official announcements via public 'comments' by retired senior government or military officials. This makes it easier to, if need be, back off from the new policy. China has not backed off this one. China is telling North Korea to do what China wants or else.

China wants work on North Korean nuclear weapons stopped. China apparently promised to be useful in the UN if North Korea resumed the six nation talks over North Korean nuclear weapons."

nikatwork··on The Search for MH 370 (Inmarsat)
Assuming the conclusion is correct, what would be the most likely explanation? Pilot murder/suicide?
nikatwork··on Lead Poisoning in Rome: The Skeletal Evidence (2012)
The delectable AskHistorians subreddit has a fascinating in-depth thread on this topic, with posts from bona fide Historians: http://np.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/23o92d/on_cosm...

> "So to sum up: the ancient Romans knew about lead poisoning, they didn't use lead vessels if they could avoid it, and we have no reason to believe acute lead poisoning was endemic among them, let alone a cause for the fall of the empire."

Of course if OP turns up a significant amount of skeletal evidence then all bets are off.

nikatwork··on How a Libertarian Paradise in Chile Fell Apart
This is the problem with trying to shoehorn reality into a purist ideology: people. Wherever you go, there you are. Until we learn how to stop being shitty and selfish, democratic government looks like the least bad option.

> You've made a HUD that fits in a motorcycle helmet.

...which allows you to see 180° behind your head, fundamentally enhancing your human capability. Unless you have worked out a way to do that organically? This is Iron Mannish, just a very early iteration.

nikatwork··on Living Simply in a Dumpster
This is reminiscent of the teacher and philosopher Diogenes [1], who lived in a large tub in the Athens marketplace. Alexander the Great is said to have been so impressed by Diogenes' minimalism that he remarked "if I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

nikatwork··on The Power of Mental Pictures
The section on using metaphor to visualize and control anxiety was of particular interest:

> If a patient describes his anxious thoughts as a monkey on his back, McGuinty will ask, "What does it look like, is it your friend, does it have a name? Could we train it? ... Could it become a pet in some ways? Are there any good things about it?" This kind of approach, says Lynne Angus, a psychologist at York University who has studied the use of metaphor in clinical psychology, can be really effective: "Instead of having something attacking you, you then start to befriend it. It starts giving you agency over the experience."

nikatwork··on Garry Kasparov, the Man Who Would Be King
> economic policy successes of the current government

Russia is likely to face crippling international economic sanctions for some time. Propping up annexed Crimea will be a massive financial drain. Foreign investment has all but fled. This is not what "economic policy success" looks like.

nikatwork··on Sublime Text Development Status
The risk being that a slow development pace will allow Atom to eat ST's lunch. Then any future revenue falls off a cliff.

Use Kickstarter to open source it and you both cash in and do the community a favour.

nikatwork··on Fail2ban security update
Unless the majority of ssh brute force attacks iterate over every port value, using a non-standard port would still have value in reducing the volume of attacks.
nikatwork··on What's the scariest thing in the world? Ask your teenage daughter
Noting a physiological difference is not the same as passing a value judgement. Vive la différence.
nikatwork··on 3-character filename extensions
Three letter extensions can also be important for compatibility with poorly-written software. I work with an "enterprise" (hah) document management system which refuses to believe that .docx files are a thing.

Ooh, you're in for a treat. Elite: Dangerous will most likely be released this year. You can already pay to beta test if you can't wait.

nikatwork··on Why has Google cast me into oblivion?
Re: tattoos - maybe that's only a US thing. Visit any finance tower in Melbourne Docklands on casual Fridays and you will see plenty of the early 20s male staff with full sleeve tattoos on display. And I'd guess around 10% of the female staff have small neck or wrist tatts. Ten years ago that would have been completely verboten.
nikatwork··on Soundcloud Releases New App, Allows Universal to Flag Your Account
Rinse has an FM license now, so they've gone from pirate to legit. It was funny listening to the DJs trying to curb their swearing (50 pound fine per naughty word) in the weeks after they were licensed.
nikatwork··on Is prison contagious?
Forsooth knave, thou dost not graspeth that ye Englyshe language doth ever evolve over yon ages. Let it not vex you.

English is a living language, that's why we don't still speak in Chaucer's Middle English [1]. If you want a perfectly static language, learn Latin.

nikatwork··on Why Being an Australian Startup Sucks
Bingo, the information was out there but the execs running the show didn't listen. A mentor with gravitas and a track record would likely have talked sense into them. This was 8 years ago though, so many more stories are accessible these days.
nikatwork··on Why Being an Australian Startup Sucks
Sure you can, especially with eg Groovy and Grails, but I wouldn't say it's Java's "sweet spot". Plus you tend to attract a lot of corporate enterprise Java devs who on average have a different mindset to quick-moving product devs.

I moved into a Perl shop straight after and the difference in productivity using off-the-shelf language features was staggering. Ironically I'm very interested in Clojure right now, I get the feeling it could deliver impressive productivity while leveraging underlying Java technologies.

nikatwork··on Why Being an Australian Startup Sucks
Lack of mentoring is also a huge problem. I know of an Australian B2C SMS startup which had a killer value proposition and secured over a year's worth of runway funding.

Unfortunately they chose the wrong tech stack to deliver - Enterprise Java instead of something nimble - and didn't have the correct focus on building traction.

With a bit of mentoring and tough truth they could easily have hit a home run.

nikatwork··on Ask HN: What can I do to find more leads for freelancing?
Design and advertising agencies are often asked by their clients to produce apps, and generally have a single inhouse dev or outsource the work to freelancers.

Do some research in your area to find a fair hourly rate for your work. Bill hourly, never ever agree to a per-project fee, I cannot stress that enough.

Also I would recommend against accepting any offers of full or part-time employment with the agencies. They tend to be sweatshops. Treat them as a supplementary source of income and don't get sucked in too far.

nikatwork··on Bannerman (YC S14) Delivers Bouncers On Demand
The military are well drilled in rules of engagement and waiting for fire orders. Far more so than your average bouncer or off-duty police officer. I heartily wish the police force were trained and disciplined like the military, it would remove a lot of the individual variation in responses.
nikatwork··on Bannerman (YC S14) Delivers Bouncers On Demand
That's a middlebrow dismissal - honestly for $35/hr do you really think the target market is political VIPs.

I've hosted plenty of club nights were the venue didn't have bouncers, so security was me and a pool cue. This service would be perfect for that scenario.

nikatwork··on When He Was A Young Man In Alabama, Tim Cook Stumbled Upon A KKK Cross Burning
> "We do things because they’re just and right," Cook replied. "If you want me to make decisions that have a clear R.O.I., then you should get out of the stock, just to be plain and simple."

While Apple cannot claim clean hands when it comes to ethics, it is fantastic to see the company leader preaching corporate responsibility. Unsustainably evil hypercapitalism is all too often justified as some kind of moral imperative for shareholders.
