nerdwaller··on Facebook Renames to Meta
I picture Facebook owning the metaverse close to the alternative outcome to Ready Player One, if IOI ended up owning the Oasis.

If you’ve not read it, it’s an enjoyable read. Definitely skip the movie, however.

nerdwaller··on GitHub Copilot available for JetBrains and Neovim
But what if I told you I wrote it fast?

… as a top level comment said, this is optimizing for the wrong problem.

nerdwaller··on GitHub Copilot available for JetBrains and Neovim
In a way it is impressive codepilot knew how to separate the query string while still being correct. However this is a fairly naive way to build a url that I wouldn't encourage committing. If I saw this in code in a review I would recommend using a dict and `urlencode` or one of the various other URL builders available (either in the stdlib or through another library like `yarl`/etc.).
nerdwaller··on Fastmail is having problems again
That makes sense. Thank you!

Can anyone educate me why companies choose to buy secondary domains for their status pages? I find it confusing and would trust `status.company.tld` immediately rather than having to think about it and verify - which you can’t really do when the issue comes up.
nerdwaller··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
There are options, but they’re much more limited. As a bit of anecdata my wife was coming from a pretty old phone. She views it as getting something more cutting edge so she can keep this one as long as her last one and didn’t think that starting with older hardware would get her there. That view limits the options to only a few.
nerdwaller··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
I’m not sure if it’s people don’t care or don’t have much of an option, especially if they lock into an ecosystem. There’s just a lot more choice on Android devices and the various trade offs.
nerdwaller··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
The original Motorola Droid is the only phone I look back on and wish I still had (with current hardware). There’s not been as good and usable a device since then in my opinion. However the X, at least for me, was pretty buggy and never lived up to the quality of the Droid with the slide out keyboard.
nerdwaller··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
I was curious how this compares to the iOS options. Looks like the iPhone 12 Pro Max is 228g and the 13 Pro Max is 240g. I’ve always disliked the weight of my 12PM that will be getting replaced with the Pixel 6 Pro, I’m excited to feel the difference in standard use.

Several hours later, I finally got the order through and even got an email confirmation and a fairly rapid delivery (end of month). If you were having issues earlier, you might be able to get in now.

> If they are going to do it anyway. Wouldn't be better that they share the research with the world?

There’s precedent already that these types of things are inhumane and the data shouldn’t be used strictly based on the ethics of it. One example includes experiments done by Nazi Germany in the 1940s[0].

nerdwaller··on The Uncertain Future of Ham Radio
GMRS has been growing a good bit, at least in the off-road community. It’s a step up from CB but much less involved than HAM. It’s certainly more limited, but generally more than sufficient for most. Even better, when I go out with my immediate family+ for various outdoor activities they are covered under my license.

I’ll keep my HAM license active, but I rarely use it anymore.

nerdwaller··on AMD: Windows 11 Slows CPUs Up to 15%, Patch Coming
I should have done some benchmarks, but I’ve noticed that W11 is much less responsive on my Surface Pro X (gen2) than W10 was. I’ve used it significantly less since upgrading. All that to say, I wonder if something could also be affecting the Microsoft ARM chips too.
nerdwaller··on Coinbase Cloud
The difference of those two docs is one is coinbase.com, their more retail oriented option (picture robinhood), and pro.coinbase.com which is a more advanced trading platform (think or swim or other more mature investor platforms). The fee structures are different, order types, visualizations, etc (even though they likely use the same infrastructure for both) and they segregate a user’s accounts between the two (though you can freely transfer between the two). Another major difference is on the retail platform you’re not going to see an orderbook - just a price. All that to say, I think the main difference is access to more information about the overall market, more advanced orders, better pair selection (that usually eventually ends up on the retail platform), and the more mature financial platform.

These new docs replace the previous pro/prime API docs and extend it into new products.

nerdwaller··on Ask HN: Worth shifting from banking to programming career?
Yes, I would say most are outside SV. The SV work style isn't a good fit for everyone :).
nerdwaller··on AT&T says it has big problems. A T-Mobile salesman showed me how big
The SIM was why I moved over from Verizon. I could sample/use/trade a lot of phones as I’ve always enjoyed playing with devices. On Verizon I had to go to a store to activate my devices and half the time the sales person would mark me as using an upgrade that I didn’t. I had to fight Verizon enough times before deciding enough was enough. My guess is the salespeople got some bonus or kudos for getting upgrades sold.
nerdwaller··on Ask HN: Worth shifting from banking to programming career?
> You rarely see people aged 50+ working as programmers (unless they are willing to take massive pay cuts)

I think this is just exposure, there’s loads - but you aren’t likely seeing them in the places you are in.

nerdwaller··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
My sample size is 1, but so far I am not impressed that my wife's M1 MBP didn't last more than 4 months before needing a full mainboard replacement. She's not a power-user and I would expect a "pro" laptop to be more resilient than this (even in the exceptional cases).

Congrats Zeke, we miss you at `$CRYPTO_EXCHANGE` but are glad to see your project grow and you do well!
nerdwaller··on Google Pixel 3 (XL) bricking out of nothing
iOS allows content blockers now, at least for Safari. While it’s not quite as good, it makes the Internet usable again. Firefox focus’s content blocker has been sufficient for me, as a specific recommendation.
nerdwaller··on High-powered motorcycle vibrations might impact iPhone camera
A friend of mine has had his phone replaced twice due to this before figuring out the cause, however now that there’s a formal publication in it I’d bet that changes.
nerdwaller··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
As an outsider, do you have concern or daily impacts on your lift with the current China/Taiwan political issues? Maybe I’m misinformed but right now things seem a little more tense than they have been historically.
nerdwaller··on Generics enabled by default in Go tip
I fully agree, after writing go for the last 7 years. I recognize that generics solve some problems, but there’s a cost in doing so. In that period I’ve had only a few cases where I wish I was back in a language with this feature (Java being my previous typed language), however most of the time the interface with an application specific data model was more than sufficient. Obviously you need to wrap that abstraction for typesafe code, but that’s pretty trivial.
nerdwaller··on Why SteamOS Switched from Debian to Arch Linux
Them using an arch base doesn’t mean they’ll be running arch as if it was the same end user of a manual arch installation. I’d bet steam is using arch as the base and acting as canonical or whoever vetting (and automating) the upstream changes.
nerdwaller··on Why SteamOS Switched from Debian to Arch Linux
> Arch is great and probably very rarely breaks but if it does, there is very few ways to recover the situation other than instructing users to reinstall the OS.

Is there any citation to support this? I’ve run arch for 11 years, never once on that same computer did I have to reinstall the OS. On the rest that have been running it for 2y and 5y they’ve never had that issue, nor instruction.

nerdwaller··on Why SteamOS Switched from Debian to Arch Linux
I’ve been running arch for 11 years, I’ve only had breaking changes a small handful of times, all of which were covered in an alert (email) of what to run to carry on. The only one that wasn’t was an upstream issue on chrome that was a secondary browser for me anyway.

Ubuntu wouldn’t be a faster release, as it’s not rolling release. However Fedora would be in a similar step as arch.

nerdwaller··on Show HN: Unlimited, free intraday stock data API
Oh that's interesting, I'll have to take a look. So far most of what I want is available from TD Ameritrade's API, which while it isn't pretty, it does work pretty well.
nerdwaller··on Show HN: Unlimited, free intraday stock data API
Where are you getting dark pools from? That’s usually intentionally not publicly visible.
nerdwaller··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
As far as I understand it, some NFTs are built where the original creator gets some percentage of every sale.
nerdwaller··on Fry's Electronics is closing all stores
I’ve always enjoyed micro center, other than a few of the employees trying to force their stickers on stuff. Similarly I’ll find someone I like to load up my items.

I’ve found they often have the best prices, even beating online retailers. At least on mobo/cpu combos.
