napsy··on 0 A.D. Release 28: Boiorix
I really love the iterative progress with 0 A.D. And every time the game shows up in news, it's always amazing to go through the changelog. I just wish I was a but younger with more time to play :) For an OSS project it's quite an achievement!

I must say it's really refreshing to see such a variety of different ideas and page designs.

napsy··on The Invisible Screen – An E-Paper Smart Display
The device in the article is not compatible with Visionect, but Visionect does offer digital signage devices (with even 13", 32" or even 42" e-ink displays). The prices of these devices are a bit premium but you get what you pay for.

napsy··on It seems Gen Z is just fine with parents knowing where they are all the time
Looks like a great advertisement for the services ... I mean all the surveys were conducted by the service providers.
napsy··on Mastodon's federation model encourages specific instances with peculiar rules
Couldn't mastodon just provide an option to logging in via OpenID? Then you would have a single authentication for multiple mastodon instances with different topics.
napsy··on Leadership as a Type B Introvert (2018)
Yes, some meetings don't really require my presence. Many times, for me it's more like: "hey, anything to add here?".
napsy··on Leadership as a Type B Introvert (2018)
I'm a lead that's an introvert as well. I've figured out what really drains me are any meetings that I'm not in charge of (or haven't initiated the meeting). It probably has something to do with self-confidence and I will speak rarely or if I'm called upon.

Also for me it's hard to be energetic at the start of the day when meetings slowly appear on the daily agenda. The more I speak, the more confidence I get. But this is only in the case with a meet with many participants. I have no problems with 1:1 meetings.

napsy··on Harmonic Coloring: A method for assigning colors to musical pitches
Is this something similar to what the site https://144notes.org/ tries to do? Color the pitches?
napsy··on I made an eInk newspaper
The current solution offers a management interface for a fleet of such devices with different content and "renderers" and power and activity statistics and charts and an HTTP API interface.
napsy··on I made an eInk newspaper
It is possible to use the HTTP backend where you manually convert PDF to images and then push images directly to the server and the device.

Hi. Yes, we have a 32" Place&Play product but currently can't be used as a replacement for the Joan product line. On the other hand, we have smaller 13" Joan devices available.
napsy··on I made an eInk newspaper
The Visionect Server is able to automatically pre-optimize the images before they're rendered on the device display (e.g. grayscaling, contrast correction).
napsy··on I made an eInk newspaper
Yes, because the device is "dumb", it can achieve long battery autonomy. For example, our Joan products can work up to 6 months on battery without recharging.
napsy··on I made an eInk newspaper
There is a product, called Joan Home that is meant for home use and can display a single Google calendar https://getjoan.com/shop/joan-home/. If you share the calendar, it can be perfect to show family events.

Disclaimer: I work for the company that develops the Joan product and the e-ink display, mentioned in the article.

napsy··on I made an eInk newspaper
Hello, I work for Visionect, the company that makes the hardware. We have a wireless e-ink based product that does exactly what you want. Check out Joan at https://getjoan.com

napsy··on HR is not your friend, and other things I think you should know
The same can be observed for every person the company is hiring. But yet, there are exceptional employees who do really good work, even outside what is expected from them. I think it's fair that the same can be said for HR.
napsy··on HR is not your friend, and other things I think you should know
In the end, I think it really depends on your expectations what the role and responsibilities of a HR actually are.

napsy··on Show HN: Show last Git push on an e-paper device
Finding cheaper solutions is tricky. I myself am not that strong in electronic engineering, so assembling my own small device is a no-go for me. But yes it would definitely be possible with a small LCD and rpi.
napsy··on Show HN: Show last Git push on an e-paper device
Yes, I don't even notice it's there until there is a change and the screen blinks a bit. To maybe reference another comment, this is why I also like e-paper, no backlight needed, just an external source of light, like the Sun ;)
napsy··on Show HN: Show last Git push on an e-paper device
I try to keep it minimum. But I really want to focus on the stats, so maybe more details about the branch should be interesting to follow.
napsy··on Show HN: Show last Git push on an e-paper device
Nice project! Yes they are indeed cheaper. It's really up to your taste. The device I'm using is already in a casing and comes with a sophisticated software that can render any modern HTML5 on the device with full JS support.
napsy··on Show HN: Show last Git push on an e-paper device
I agree, it's expensive if you compare the price to an LCD. But as this is e-paper technology with completely different use cases, the manufacturing costs are still high. Keep in mind that, currently, e-paper is not a substitute for classic LCD panels.

Where e-paper shines for me is very low battery consumption. For example, the mentioned device can hold up to 6 months without a single battery recharge and is completely wireless.

napsy··on Show HN: Show last Git push on an e-paper device
Hello, author here. That's totally correct, I use gitlab and that is the reason why gitlab and not github. I wanted to track the commits and the number of lines added/deleted per commit and my 6" e-ink device was kind of perfect for the job, sitting next to my monitor :)
napsy··on Hacking Together an E-ink Dashboard
This is exactly what the Visionect Place&Play does: can display HTML5 content on E-Ink displays (see https://www.visionect.com/products/place-and-play/) and is packaged in a neat casing.

They're not converted but can be implicitly casted to pointer types.
napsy··on Tell HN: C Experts Panel – Ask us anything about C
An array is not a pointer. These are completely different data types. For example, you can't apply pointer arithmetic to arrays without casting them to pointers.
