mullen··on Ask HN: How can scam callers fake a mobile phone number?
In the Phone App, under Settings -> "Spam and Call Screen", there are bunch of Spam and Call Screening options.
mullen··on You don't ever own an electric vehicle
My phone and TV continue to work doing their primary job if I don't have them attached to the Internet. My Google Pixel 5 Pro will continue to operate as a phone only if it is removed from Internet and unable to install updates or check into the Google Mothership. Same with my Sony TV. Yes, they lose some functionality because they are not on the Internet but I would expect that because those functionalities require the Internet. However, my car should always work as a car, even without Internet access or ever checking with the Car Manufacturer Mothership. Yes, I can expect mapping feature to not work, but when I start my car, it should always start.
mullen··on Facebook and Instagram to temporarily allow calls for violence against Russians
> A no-fly zone is an easy win for NATO

Doing this feeds the narrative from Putin that NATO is an aggressive force and it would also go against what NATO is, a defensive alliance.

mullen··on Prediction that Kyiv falls to Russian forces by April 2022 goes from 90% to 26%
Nothing. A Nuclear Bluff is just that, a Bluff. Putin can't win in a nuclear war and if he uses nukes anywhere, he is done for. No one is going to have anything to do with him or Russia on any level after that.
mullen··on If you speak Russian, call Russia and tell them what is happening in Ukraine
> Shortwave radio station that is possible to tune to in Moscow and beyond, where they can listen to people they have known before, would have much bigger impact. Like Radio Free Europe did.

This is what should be done. Random people calling on the phone and trying to "tell you what's really happening" is not going to work, especially in a place like Russia. Shortwave radio is perfect for this.

The great thing about Shortwave radio is that radios are cheap, low powered and easy to hide. The infrastructure is already out there and due to the Cold War, Russians are already familiar with it.

mullen··on Ask HN: What would the impact be of Europe to America undersea cables being cut?
Unlikely to happen, for several reasons:

1) Putin or any government cutting the Transatlantic cables could be seen as an act of war.

2) The Internet would just route around the issue(s).

3) Any ship caught cutting cables in the Atlantic would greeted by the US/UK Navy.

4) As someone else pointed out, there are a lot of Transatlantic cables, so it actually might be hard to cut enough of them to make an impact.

mullen··on Russia's top bank quits Europe due to sanctions
> The strength of these types of global payments systems is that they are global and neutral.

If you think Russia, China and Belarus are going to be neutral, then you are being a bit naive. The West may not be neutral but it is rules based, so you know what you are getting before you start working with it. Russia, China and Belarus are not rules based and they will retaliate against you for a whole list of things that are not written down anywhere.

mullen··on Silenced AirTags with disabled speakers are popping up for sale online
> If the item has its own mobile network, i'm expecting an extra $20/mo for a phone plan (at which point, comparing to a fixed cost of an AirTag isn't valid.)

Some phone plans will give you additional data only sim card and only charge you the cost of the bandwidth (Google Fi does this). You can also get data only plans that are intended to used with Vending Machines and IoT devices (I guess a tracking device on the Internet is a IoT device).

LTE was not invented to create TikTok, it was created for other reasons, it just happens that TikTok could fill LTE with garbage. Just all tech that depends on other tech does this.
mullen··on In 1953 a telco executive predicts the rise of smartphones and video calls
I disagree that Usenet and Forums would not have been easily predicted. Town Squares, Public Forums and Message Boards have been around for thousands years and I don't see why anyone would have thought they would not have existed in the electronic space. Societies have always had 1 to 1 and 1 to Many communication, so it would be natural that some form of those would exist in electronic communication.
mullen··on California is the only state to hide its spending – nearly $300B a year
Why would you take anyone seriously where the first thing to come out their mouth is a lie?

Words matters. Their context matters.

mullen··on Ask HN: What things has tech made worse in your life?
It's always been that way. While I have never used Tinder (Been married during its existence) but when I talk to men that have used Tinder successfully and unsuccessfully, their stories sound just like my pre-Tinder dating life. To me, Tinder sounds like it just increased the velocity of success or failure.
mullen··on University of Florida bars professors from testifying in a voting rights case
Well, you did voluntary signed a Contract. As part of a commercial exchange, you agree to do and do not certain things for money. Inalienable Rights can't be signed away, so the argument that you are signing away Inalienable Rights really does not hold water.
mullen··on Ask HN: Best way to host a website for 500 years?
Encode the knowledge into the DNA/RNA of a highly contagious and non-deadly human virus and release it into the population. Hopefully, mutations won't overwrite your information.
mullen··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
Or maybe you are wrong and California's "draconian politics" are being effective and corporations are scared of that.
mullen··on How my ivermectin research led to Twitter death threats
> The result is, healthy young people who almost certainly cannot benefit from taking the vaccine are being pressured to take it, suffering extreme adverse side effects, and being told that they're just psych cases (suffering from anxiety or something similar)

The above post is the exact reason why we are never getting out of this Pandemic. Just pure misinformation being passed as facts.

Young people can die from COVID but they won't die from COVID vaccine shots. Once they are vaccinated, they are much less likely to spread COVID, which is the real reason we want the young to get vaccinated. So they can stop spreading it.

Individual cases of people having strong reactions to the COVID vaccine is expected and not harmful to the individuals. I fail to understand why anti-vaxxers keep posting this kind of information. They are just telling us what we have already been told we can expect.

Also, if you think having a strong reaction to the COVID vaccine was bad, wait until you get COVID because it just might kill you.

mullen··on Covid vaccine immunity is waning – how much does that matter?
I can't believe we are this far into the COVID pandemic with vaccines available and people are still trying to play gymnastics with the data.

The data shows that all groups of people at any age who are fully vaccinated are substantially less like to get COVID or end up in the hospital or end up dying from COVID. Not by a little bit but a lot. You can point to one day in Israel to make your point and I point to the entire US for the last 6 months that backs up what I am saying.

The Israeli data you cited is also is leaving a lot of other information out. How many of those patients were young or old and which were most likely to be fully vaccinated? It turns out that most of the fully vaccinated patients were over 60 with comorbidities and the unvaccinated people in the hospital were young people. Also, we know that the COVID vaccines would lose effectiveness over time and the patients in the hospital who are fully vaccinated would be the first group of people who would get a booster shot. I am also going to go out on a limb and say that if you end up in the hospital with COVID and you are fully vaccinated, I am pretty sure COVID would have killed you if you weren't vaccinated.

Everyone who is cleared to get vaccinated should get vaccinated.

mullen··on Multitasking Doesn't Work
> Curious, are you able to have parallel thought streams? That's the problem. Parallel thought streams is where all my productivity issues come from.
mullen··on New York's largest healthcare provider fires 1,400 unvaccinated workers
Because you don't take a chance in dying if you get the vaccine but you do if you catch COVID. Also, you spread COVID when you get COIVD, you don't spread COVID when you get the COVID vaccine.
mullen··on New York's largest healthcare provider fires 1,400 unvaccinated workers
No police powers are being used, so I don't see how that is relivate. Also, the Agencies are not going out of their mandate. OSHA was created to make the workplace safer and by mandating vaccines, they are.
mullen··on North Korean missiles land in Japanese waters
Really Pissing off China Mass Murder Nuclear Fallout
mullen··on China uses anti-fraud app to track access to overseas financial news sites
This would be a terrible idea for Taiwan since every country that supports Taiwan is down wind of China. South Korea, Japan and the US do not want nuclear fallout coming over their territory. It makes coming to Taiwan's aid a lot more difficult both logistically and politically.
mullen··on Surgical masks reduce Covid-19 spread, large-scale Stanford study shows
This is naive. There is a significant portion of the population that are not going to cooperated with health safety protocols unless there is a real chance of them going to jail or getting a fine.

We're talking wearing a mask and saving lives.

mullen··on Swiping left on magnetic stripes
The Pandemic has really changed how credit cards are handled here. Pre-Pandemic, Tap and Pay was fairly rare, but now, it is everywhere (Nearly 90% by my informal count). The odd thing I noticed is that the smaller the market, the more likely the store/shop uses Tap and Pay. American's are also using their phone more to pay.
mullen··on Hospital exec says employees are walking off the job
This isn't a Political debate, this is Public Health. The data is super clear, the only way out of this Public Health disaster is vaccines. The faster that everyone gets their vaccine shots, the faster ALL OF US can get out of this pandemic that is negatively impacting all of our lives. The current vaccines can do that with next to zero impact on a person's health.

Individuals not getting vaccine shots are not endangering just their lives, they are endangering the Public Health. They are putting unnecessary stress on the Health Care system and allowing themselves to be the incubator of the next varent that prolongs this Pandemic.

We're not Scapegoating anyone for this Pandemic because the people who choose not to get vaccinated are driving and causing this Pandemic. They really are to blame for the Pandemic in its current form.

BTW: Public Health > Individual Freedom

mullen··on Hospital exec says employees are walking off the job
If I could take two shots that prevented me from having Heart Disease and never having a heart attack that kills me, I would get those two shots.
mullen··on San Francisco might spend $20k per trash can to block garbage scavengers
What is it with the Right Wing that they just can't tell the truth anymore?

The article clearly states: "While the prototype is pricey, city officials said the actual replacement cost would be about $3,000 to $4,000 per can, according to the report."

However, the headline is some Right Wing Fever Dream of Liberal Damnation that is not close to the truth. Also, what is the Right Wing realistic solution to this problem? As usual, they have none.

mullen··on Why does NBC make it so difficult to watch the Olympics?
I'm not a sports person at all but every two years, my wife and I watch tons of Olympics. It's really weird for us since I probably watch 1 hour of sports per year but during the Olympics (Winter and Summer), we will sit down and watch 3 - 5 hours each day. Sports that we have no interest in outside of the Olympics.
mullen··on Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles
But Toyota has build quality that Tesla can't touch. Toyota won't be starting from scratch, they will starting from the point of making great high quality ICE vehicles and converting those to EV. Tesla build quality is not that great but they have better tech and understanding of their EV customers than Toyota does.
