mooktakim··on We didn't have a login page
You could have just done a simple HTTP login.

I usually leave the authentication to the end, just before first deployment. it's a bit of a distraction.

mooktakim··on Bad rails conventions got me a weekend stay with the CEO of Airbnb
I don't see the incrementing integer ID's as a "bad convention". It's a simple and intuitive solution that works for most apps. Its ok to be "guessable". You should set permissions properly regardless of how random your ID's are.
mooktakim··on GitHub-Next
This is minor compared to all the new websites that use div's for link and button tags.
mooktakim··on John Carmack's new AGI company, Keen Technologies, has raised a $20M round
AGI would be something that is able to do many different tasks without needing to be specifically built for. It could learn and do. Like a person. It can learn to drive car and then learn to iron clothes.

It does not need to be self aware. Can still be considered a machine.

People think if we get to AGI, maybe we'll get to self awareness. But we won't know that until it happens. We don't fully understand how sentience works.

mooktakim··on John Carmack's new AGI company, Keen Technologies, has raised a $20M round
Artificial General Intelligence != sentient being
mooktakim··on What Happened to the Inventors?
They aren't called inventors anymore. They are researchers, scientists, analysts, principals, entrepreneurs etc. People are discovering and inventing new things, a lot of it in private companies.
mooktakim··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
New devs start with doing DRY everywhere. Over time they learn to be more thoughtful. Sometimes duplication is good. In my experience the priority should always be dev readability. If duplication helps you read the code better (as its not hidden away), thats fine.
mooktakim··on I'm So Happy I Quit My Dream Job
One of the best examples of a product website
mooktakim··on Ask HN: Has anyone made any serious money selling Android apps?
I think the money is to build apps for others and not for yourself. You can charge a good day rate.
mooktakim··on Is Ruby on Rails Still Relevant in 2022?
I think the authors questions are not relavent at all. If you all you care about is the technology you use, fine.

But there is a reason for all this work. You are building a product. The questions should be related to building products.

- What is the size if your team? how much resource do you have? - Fast, Cheap or Good? (which two?) - Is it an unknown problem space? need to learn and iterate fast? - Market you sell to, high growth? medium? - Do you worry about scaling issues (eg. twitter) or more product issues - Do you want to use fancy tech or do you just want to build something?

Probably more questions like that would help answer what you should use.

mooktakim··on Play with TailwindCSS in the Browser
It's really for the React generation. People used to embedding the code, markup and style all in one file.

I've tried multiple times to use it, but I always end up using something like bootstrap. Funnily enough, I paid for tailwindui and take the styles and reproduce them in bootstrap css.

Bootstrap community seems to have given up. They only want to sell templates. The default is ugly. Sometimes I think about going back to bootstrap 2.

mooktakim··on First triangle ever rendered on an M1 Mac with a fully open-source driver
Hmm, I thought Linux already supported ARM architecture. Is there something different about M1? Is it not like other ARM?
mooktakim··on The Story of Heroku
Article doesn't mention the original name "Heroku Garden". It was a playground for Ruby on Rails development. You could go from thought to deploy in matter of minutes.
mooktakim··on The Collison Brothers Built Stripe into a $95B Unicorn
I still don't understand what Paddle offers to SaaS.

As a dev I thought maybe easier integration. But it doesn't seem all that different from Stripe Invoice.

mooktakim··on Earn $200K by fuzzing for a weekend: Part 1
Wouldn't you just exchange it immediately to USD and not be affected by market.
mooktakim··on OneWeb will resume satellite launches with SpaceX as the launch provider
Yes but a reusable rocket will always be cheaper than a one-off rocket. They could charge twice as normal and still be overall cheaper.
mooktakim··on OneWeb will resume satellite launches with SpaceX as the launch provider
This could actually save them money
mooktakim··on The problem is: mark isn't handsome
I think it's the opposite. Imagine if he was of Chinese background, he would have been attacked even more. Would have been called a spy and taking over america with Facebook, ruining democracy.
mooktakim··on Starting the World's First V8 Powered Tesla [video]
This is true right now. Probably true for all the EV makers. Give the EV market 10/20 years to mature, and all this will be sorted out.
mooktakim··on Royal Marines Testing Out Jet Suits [video]
It might be better to have a chair you sit on and use a joystick to maneuver instead of your arms. Let software manage the flight and stabilisation.
mooktakim··on SpaceX reveals the grand extent of its starport plans in South Texas
I'm thinking maybe the solution would be simple as they'll just need to raise the platform and other areas by building up. The mostly empty land is not used for anything and allows for explosions without causing harm to people, they can be under water (maybe). You can raise the roads going to the platform too.
mooktakim··on Density raises $51M Series C led by Kleiner Perkins
I don't understand why this can't already be done with CCTV cameras. There's obvious privacy concerns, but we already have CCTV. We are already recorded. Why do you need a special device when you could just count people on camera.
mooktakim··on State of SaaS Product Onboarding
I know this page visually looks amazing, but it was really hard for me to read the content. Weird layout and huge font sizes.
mooktakim··on German government expands subsidies for electric cars
Just because they plug in at the same time doesn't mean they all need to draw power. In fact a lot of chargers now are set to charge late at night to take advantage of the lower off-peak prices.
mooktakim··on German government expands subsidies for electric cars
Firstly, when they add these types of charging stations, they will make the grid ready.

Secondly, grid has a lot of capacity. Its like motorways, most of the time its under utilised. Only during peak time that it is full capacity. Think of the grid in a similar way. Its mostly under utilised except for peak time. All we need to do is make use of it outside peak time (with batteries) and suddenly we have double or triple the capacity.

mooktakim··on German government expands subsidies for electric cars
Solution to these problems will come. Its a chicken & egg problem. I live in a flat in London and thinking of similar issues with electric cars. Maybe 20min supercharging every couple of weeks is enough for my weekend driving. I'm hoping soon every lamp post will have a charging plug.
mooktakim··on Deploying a Rails 5.2 PostgreSQL App on AWS Elastic Beanstalk
Under "Allowing access to the database" theres: Click on “Add Rule.” For “Type,” choose “PostgreSQL,” and for “Source” choose “Anywhere.”

Would recommend not to do that. Create Security Group, add EB to it and allow that only.

mooktakim··on How an offer to sell our business inspired us to take on $17M in debt
I'm wondering what happens to the cap table now. Lets say after many raises the investors own 50% of the company and 50% is founders and employees. If the company borrows money to buy out the investors, does that mean the 50% owned by founders/employees turn into 100%? I'm thinking the valuation would still remain the same, which means suddenly their value goes up significantly.
mooktakim··on Simple, correct, fast: in that order
> Correctness comes first. Simplicity is highly desirable, adds additional cost, but always comes after correctness.

Yes, but what is "Correctness". Its not usually so binary. Get to "good enough" and move onto the next thing.

mooktakim··on 'Snoopers' charter' changes put forward
The only way MP's would understand is if we make all their Internet activity public. Lets see if they have anything to hide.
