mmaniac··on Moments in Chromecast's history
Funny... My TCL TV (75C745K) has been nothing but headaches. Extremely buggy and often needs to be rebooted.

Great panel but the software stinks.

mmaniac··on Hiding messages in x86 binaries using semantic duals (2020)
I wonder whether any other ISAs support something similar.

In 32 bit ARM you could get close with variations on a load/store instruction with an offset of 0.

  LDR R0, [R1]
  LDR R0, [R1, #-0]
  LDR R0, [R1, #0]!
  LDR R0, [R1], #0
Same instruction but different addressing modes and therefore different mnemonics.
mmaniac··on GTA 3 is being ported to the Sega Dreamcast
This will be a fascinating port to watch take shape. There are many DC to PS2 ports which show the PS2 unfavourably. But GTA 3 is a game which utilises some of the PS2's strengths like faster vector performance and more RAM. A PS2 to DC port then might shed more light on how the consoles compare more generally.
mmaniac··on Null-Restricted and Nullable Types
These are stupid rules. The point of the proposal is to invite discussion on the proposed rules. Introducing implicit type conversions that throw to a language which is otherwise strongly typed is an awful idea.

Java should take a look at its own history and how it was able to retrofit generics into the language. It's nearly all type safe and the unfortunate unsafe parts generate compiler warnings.

mmaniac··on Null-Restricted and Nullable Types
Thanks for clarifying the distinction - that's worse than I thought. When an expression as simple as bb = b can throw something has definitely gone wrong.
mmaniac··on Null-Restricted and Nullable Types
> In this JEP, nullness markers are explicit: to express a null-restricted or nullable type, the ! or ? symbol must appear in source. In the future, it may be useful, for example, for a programmer to somehow express that every type in a class or compilation unit is to be interpreted as null-restricted, unless a ? symbol is present. The details of any such a feature will be explored separately.

I think this question needs to be answered now. The addition of ? is useless and confusing unless this is planned to eventually happen.

I am inclined not to introduce breaking changes and to only have !.

mmaniac··on A new approach to error handling
Essentially the same as continuation passing style with a choice of continuation to return with.
mmaniac··on Far-left extremists likely behind France rail sabotage, interior minister says
Exactly.
mmaniac··on How simultaneous multithreading works under the hood
What CPU?
mmaniac··on Far-left extremists likely behind France rail sabotage, interior minister says
Doing the dirty work of someone whose ambitions differ from yours due to coincidentally aligned short term objectives is exactly what makes one a useful idiot.

Anarchists wanted the Tsar gone. Didn't work out for them in the long run.

mmaniac··on Avoid ISP Routers
Apart from all these legitimate reasons not to use an ISP router or modem, I find that they just... suck. The signal strength on mine is awful.
mmaniac··on Dysfunctional Options Pattern in Go
Optional types don't fix this. The problem here is not having default (or named) function arguments. With optionals, you still have to pass every arg explicitly.

Languages with both of these features like Python don't end up using the builder pattern or reinventing it like this author.

mmaniac··on Ruby methods are colorless
Ah I've got it. Async is a monad and the function is just polymorphic over Monad m. In the sync case m is Identity. Can you point me in the direction of some libraries which offer functions like these?
mmaniac··on Why Discover is no American Express
I only ever use my debit card for cash withdrawals, and I purchase exclusively on my credit card.

Why wouldn't I? My direct debit clears the balance every month so I never pay interest, and I enjoy a couple quid of cashback and better consumer protections.

mmaniac··on How QAnon Rips Families Apart
Would have been nice if the headline was prefaced with "Book Review" as it is once you click through. Then I would have been less disappointed that the article did not answer the question it apparently asked.
mmaniac··on Ruby methods are colorless
Can you give an example of a language which is polymorphic in this way and how that looks?
mmaniac··on No one expects young men to do anything and they respond by doing nothing (2022)
Incels with kids? Get your narrative straight before you blow a gasket.
mmaniac··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
The entire tax regime in the UK is outright designed to inhibit class mobility and penalise hard work. The 60% tax trap and other benefit cliffs over 100k are just punishing. At the same time the capitalist class enjoy a cool 20% haircut on capital returns.
mmaniac··on What's the point of std:monostate? You can't do anything with it
Why wouldn't you want std::tuple<> to be the same as std::monostate, though? In many languages with a proper unit type such as Haskell and Rust, the zero tuple is the unit type.
mmaniac··on No one expects young men to do anything and they respond by doing nothing (2022)
Independence achieved at last, for men and women.
mmaniac··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Labour's share of the vote hardly changed from 2024 to 2019; fewer people voted Labour in absolute numbers.

Labour's electoral prospects improved because of the implosion of the Tories, not anything they did.

mmaniac··on Panic at the Job Market
Yet GCC will still apparently let you call this function without as much as a warning. This should be one of the easiest mistakes to find statically.

Clang at least errors out here.

C++ is a mess.

mmaniac··on The golden age of scammers: AI-powered phishing
I've already experienced two AI-powered phishing attempts personally in the last few weeks. One was pretty transparent, but the other almost got me. I expect we'll all see a lot more of these soon.
mmaniac··on Deconstructing the Role-Playing Video Game
Deconstruction would be using tropes of a genre in a way which challenges their usual narrative function. It's related to subversion, but it also has something to say about the genre's implicit themes in general.

Undertale is an RPG where killing every monster you meet for XP is a very bad thing to do in the context of the plot. Perhaps killing everything in your path to succeed is not a good message. That would be a blunt example of how it deconstructs the genre.

NieR contains a medieval fantasy setting, a wilful protagonist, a dark mirror antagonist, "the power of friendship", heroic sacrifices, and secret endings. These are all staples of RPGs, but they're used here in ways which are subtly critical of the rest of the genre.

I don't have a literature degree either, so I don't know whether this is also the strict definition. But this seems to be how it's used in casual online discussions.

mmaniac··on Deconstructing the Role-Playing Video Game
The title of this article threw me for a loop. I was expecting a deconstruction in the literary sense.

Still, I didn't leave disappointed.

mmaniac··on The Cult of Stefan Molyneux
In the period this report concerns he was a fairly standard "racist libertarian" type. His videos promoted revisionist narratives around the impact of police violence on racial minorities, antisemitic theories regarding the US-Israel relationship and Israeli-Palestenian conflict, and scientific racism. Apart from the racist beliefs, there was plenty of anti-communism including apologetics for McCarthyism. If you were an active observer of the growth of the Alt Right movement, you'd know he was a major part of that.

As the report states, he was banned from Youtube in 2020. I haven't been paying close attention to that, but he seems to be more in the Jordan Peterson/Andrew Tate sphere of appealing to disenfranchised men on gender issues now.

mmaniac··on Corporate HR is taking "Equity" out of DEI
There is an implicit assumption baked into both of these quotes. Equality and equity are interchangeable because human beings are essentially fungible and will experience the same outcomes given the same opportunities. Inequality of outcomes necessarily means there was inequality of opportunity, because there's no other explanation for the disparity.
mmaniac··on I Hope Rust Does Not Oxidize Everything
A lot of this author's complaints about Rust remind me of similar historical complaints about C++, but amplified.

Hijacking and overtaking new projects? C++ and Rust both do that. C++'s compile times were a joke, Rust is even worse. Complex semantics and syntax? Both have those. Rust is trying to be everything to everyone? C++ has always been criticised as design by committee.

And yet C still exists and is widely used. Once the smoke cleared, people simply hated C++ and what it brought. After all was said and done, C became regarded as much more tolerable and usable for lack of those headaches. C++ still exists and there is certainly not a C++ monoculture. I hope and expect that the same story will play out for Rust.

mmaniac··on 'It's going to be catastrophic': Adult product sellers scrambling after Etsy ban
> In 2018, Tumblr banned porn on its platform after Apple deleted its app from the App Store, which ultimately led to Tumblr’s demise.

Sometimes I can still hear his voice...

mmaniac··on Malloc() and free() are a bad API (2022)
The problem described in the article is the opposite of what you say. malloc() is too high level - it hides the allocation size and simply returns a nice neat void*. This leads to implementation hacks like sneaking a capacity field into the allocation, and hiding this capacity from the user.

The proposed alternative has less magic going on.
