mikeytown2··on There are over a billion outdated Android devices in use
Anecdotally my iPhone6 16gb became way more usable with iOS 11. I went from always running out of room to now having a lot of space. I use https://photos.google.com/ all the time so I rarely have more than 200mb of media on my phone. For me the OS footprint shrunk quite a bit and as a result the phone became a lot more usable.
mikeytown2··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
I'll be looking to downgrade to Firefox Extended Support Release 52.4.1 [1] and using the hidden settings to enable Electrolysis [2]. Currently on 56 and it's very fast but with 57 tabs mix plus is gone [3].

mikeytown2··on Cosmic radiation exposure and persistent cognitive dysfunction
Getting there faster is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of radiation absorbed. Nuclear power is needed for faster rockets and powerful magnets; safe and reliable access to LEO is the first step to getting reactors in space.
mikeytown2··on How Seattle Got More People to Ride the Bus
If the park and ride lots didn’t fill up the bus would be viable for our household. We actually went from using the bus to not using it because of this issue.

mikeytown2··on Ask HN: My house might burn down in the next 24 hours. Suggestions?
Plug the roof gutters and fill them up with water. Close any vents with metallic tape. Remove any vegetation that’s on the structure.
mikeytown2··on A Surprise from the Supervolcano Under Yellowstone
Lots of smaller earthquakes is what to look for.
mikeytown2··on A Surprise from the Supervolcano Under Yellowstone
Summary: super volcanoes can go from dormant to erupting in a human lifetime; previous estimates were it took much longer.
mikeytown2··on Dumb Things Camera Companies are Still Doing
Using an ND filter to get a slower shutter speed is the way to go. The more expensive cameras usually have a ND filter built in. Shooting at 24fps is possible on most modern cameras these days.

If you want to have the ability to adjust the amount of blur in post shooting at 120fps+ allows for that workflow but it’s a pain to do.

Or is it something else like a bad video codec?

NPR's is better than any amp page according to Google pagespeed insights.

mikeytown2··on Firefox Quantum Lands in Beta, Developer Edition
Using a Core2 Duo E7500 (Q1'09) and this is a noticeable improvement; but I still find chrome faster in that the GUI doesn't stall. Firefox locks up when typing into a new tab's address bar. Still using Firefox (55) as the daily driver even though I have to kill it about 8 times a day. FF 57 does fix the need to kill Firefox but then a couple of the plugins I use are not supported anymore.
mikeytown2··on MacOS High Sierra
Switch to Google Photos[1]; it's amazing. I'm always a little worried about what they are doing with all the data though...

mikeytown2··on HTTP Immutable Responses
With that more complicated toolchain comes some added benefits though. See https://www.drupal.org/project/advagg as an example that just about does it all.
mikeytown2··on Windows for Linux Nerds
I used to run http://www.andlinux.org/ but with no 64bit support it's dead now. This was how to run Linux on windows.

mikeytown2··on Google AMP is bad for e-commerce
>if google made some machine verifiable guidelines for "light" webpages that would earn them this "icon".

If you get a score above 95 or (X) on google page speed insights that might be a metric that everyone can agree on.

mikeytown2··on Japan Pictures Likely Show Melted Fukushima Fuel for First Time
In terms of a hardened robot, hydraulic or pneumatic movement powered by an diesel engine seems like the way to go. depending on the location you could run the pressure lines to the robot and keep the engine outside.
mikeytown2··on NASA admits it doesn’t have the funding to land humans on Mars
The SLS rocket is crazy expensive. It's known as the Senate Launch System because of all the pork. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2...
mikeytown2··on Ask HN: What does your diet look like?
I have no idea why it fixed it but it did. Not overweight, so that wasn't it. I heard that keto can do it, so I thought that this is a better option than surgery or a cpap machine. In this n=1 study it totally worked. It wasn't exercise ether as I've only been doing that on a regular basis for the last 1.5 years.
mikeytown2··on Ask HN: What does your diet look like?
Ketogenic diet for 2.5 years now. High fat, moderate protein, very low carb. Weight loss was not the goal, not snoring at night was the goal. Still weight the same as I have for the last 15 years but I've put on more muscle.
mikeytown2··on Introducing Cloud Spanner, a Global Database Service
I'm curious about how you have MySQL configured. If the query cache is enabled you will see MySQL plateau. There's also the all important innodb_buffer_pool_size and innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit. See this for more info https://www.percona.com/blog/2013/09/20/innodb-performance-o...

mikeytown2··on NASA Twins Study: How stressful will a trip to Mars be on the human body?
I wonder if you could re-create a magnetosphere by wrapping the entire planet in wire. Thinking this would be feasible once cheap high temperature superconductors are available that don't "quench" [1]. Sigh.

Good news is that the James Webb telescope should be up and running by then.
mikeytown2··on Bringing Wide Color to Instagram
Windows I can see it if using XnView but I can't see it if I use the built in image viewers. It's an older computer so it's XnView converting to sRGB most likely.
mikeytown2··on Dropbox Could Have One of 2017’s Most Interesting IPOs
I'm moving away from Dropbox as a consumer. Google Photos [1] for jpg and video; Prime Photos [2] for raw and jpg. Uploading raw and jpg to google photos causes a lot of duplicates, plus it gets recompressed.

mikeytown2··on Lame showers, dishwashers that don't work, and dirty clothes
One of the best low flow shower heads I've used: https://www.amazon.com/Delta-75158SN-2-0GPM-Shower-Nickel/dp... OR https://www.amazon.com/75152-Single-Function-Shower-H2Okinet...

In terms of dishwashers, I will be looking for 240v or a miele/bosch.

mikeytown2··on System loads web pages 34 percent faster by fetching files more effectively
From my experience preconnect is a big improvement for connecting to 3rd party domains. Will also mention that once you have JS deferred, CSS on a 3rd party domain (google fonts) can cause some major slowdowns in terms of the start rendering metrics if using HTTP/2 on a slow connection; all the bandwidth is used for the primary domain connection and not used for blocking resources, end result being images get downloaded before external blocking CSS.
