mikeytown2··on Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron_reflector Doesn't reflectors help a lot here or am I missing something?
mikeytown2··on Glorified electric golf carts for all
How hard is it to convert a golf cart to a NEV?
mikeytown2··on Glorified electric golf carts for all
Wonder how easy it'd be to unlock the speed on NEVs.
mikeytown2··on Off the Grid
Pretty sweet setup there. I'd personally always opt for more power. Could replace LPG with induction cooktops in theory; but I am not in a boat. Salt water is very hard on almost everything so it sounds like they have a system figured out.

Living off grid, on land is something I've been looking into. Power is everything. The more you have, the better your comfort is. Ideal build: ICF foundation/house, exterior insulation. DIY friendly horizontal geothermal for hvac and water heating, rocket mass fireplace as backup heat. Ground water well, dehumidifier backup water generation, large in ground water tanks. Solar panels everywhere, Lifepo4 batteries, in ground propane tank for backup power, extra solar power can be used for heating water; everything would be electric including cars. Greenhouse with ground to air heat exchanger pipes about 10 feet underground so the power of keeping it above freezing is just a fan. Septic drain field, if water is very scarce then grey water recycling.

Anything I missed on the ultimate off grid house?

mikeytown2··on Ask HN: Would you pass an interview for your current position?
At my current job, yes. I'm doing the interviews and I ask them to look at code and tell me what it's doing. Nothing crazy like bit math, just a couple stand alone functions for parsing json (using standard calls) and the error handling. Amazing what you can learn with just that.
mikeytown2··on Prince of Persia in JavaScript
Incredibly hard to play on a phone. The fact that swipes on a screen actually does something is impressive nonetheless.
mikeytown2··on Test your product on a crappy laptop
Raspberry pi works well for this

mikeytown2··on Tree-ring dating of musical instruments
Using modern techniques and technology can a better violin be made now?
mikeytown2··on Big gap between Pfizer, Moderna vaccines for preventing Covid hospitalizations
Better stated would be that for other diseases, live attenuated and dead virus vaccines seem to target most of the virus vs just a small part of the virus (spike in this case). I think the target of just the spike was done for calendar speed. If a larger target can be used in the future, I think it'll have more success. Delivery can be mRNA or traditional.
mikeytown2··on Big gap between Pfizer, Moderna vaccines for preventing Covid hospitalizations
In general natural immunity is as good or sometimes better than a vaccine.

N=1 that natural immunity lasts long has to do with my 70+ year old dad who got covid Summer 2020 and has been doing blood donations ever since as he has type O blood. Every time he goes in they report back that his antibody count is still high. I can't offer you any studies on that, just a personal antidote.

Edit guess I'll get more minus points for my N=1 antidotes

mikeytown2··on Big gap between Pfizer, Moderna vaccines for preventing Covid hospitalizations
In general a whole cell vaccine is better as the entire virus gets targeted. I believe the mRNA was done the way it was for calendar speed. Hopefully whole cell vaccines will be approved in the near future as odds are they'll be much better at handling variants.
mikeytown2··on The whitest paint could eliminate the need for air conditioning
https://rovashield.com/rova-shield-insulation/ Aerogel paint can also effectively do the same thing. Cost is usually the issue with construction.
mikeytown2··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
https://joinmastodon.org/ Might as well see what FB is scared about
mikeytown2··on Compiling C Programs Into “Mov” Instructions (And Only “Mov” Instructions)
Making hardware that'd take advantage of this simple instruction set might have some interesting results.
mikeytown2··on Tesla big battery fire under control after burning more than three days
Lifepo4 for stationary storage makes so much more sense vs NMC.
mikeytown2··on Strong quantum computational advantage using a superconducting quantum processor
Is this one of the first examples where a quantum computer is noticeably faster vs classical; or have there been past examples?
mikeytown2··on The Making of the Kosher Phone (2014)
A simple phone is still strangely appealing to me.
mikeytown2··on NASA can't figure out what's causing computer issues on the Hubble telescope
Gyroscopes are in short supply on Hubble currently
mikeytown2··on NASA can't figure out what's causing computer issues on the Hubble telescope
They're trying to find the broken component; what caused the issue is usually a handful of things in space. Those are usually the top causes of component failure in that environment.
mikeytown2··on NASA can't figure out what's causing computer issues on the Hubble telescope
The cause of the failure is most likely tin whiskers [1] or radiation.

mikeytown2··on A dwarf planet coming within 11 AU of the sun over the next 10 years
Landing a telescope on it would only make sense if orbits around it are highly unstable (like our moon) and if the dwarf planet was geothermally active so energy on the surface would be "easy" to extract (which comes with it's own set of headaches). Orbiting it with a "big for space probes" camera would most likely give us more interesting data.

Using the plant as a Coronagraph if orbiting far out is another interesting idea, but using a near earth astroid would be a better idea as the telescope could be powered by solar panels they.

mikeytown2··on You won’t live to see a 128bit CPU (2019)
I'd guess Digital Alpha (DEC) but I can't find anything mentioning it. Other guess would be Cray.
mikeytown2··on Ivermectin for Prevention and Treatment of Covid-19 Infection
N=1. Me and my 2 year old had covid. My wife started ivermectin and never got sick. Shared bed and sick 2 year old wants mommy.

Ivermectin didn't work for me (diarrhea) but my fever went from 102.7 down to 99 12 hours after HQC after 6 days of a slow downward spiral (fever kept going up and up every day). So for me, my take is the drugs absolutely worked.

mikeytown2··on Unreliability at Scale
At scales this large, finding the root cause is the best choice. By finding the cause you can then do tests on all boxes via cron to make sure everything works as expected; allowing you to pull hardware before an issue becomes widespread; can then rerun the boxes inputs on another machine if it was handling more than serving http requests. Robust hardware validation and testing is a must when dealing with millions of cores.
mikeytown2··on Uranium magnet (2015)
If a smaller uranium metal crystal can be made by using a 65 Tesla field then this has many applications for things that already uses uranium. Remember that in "energy conversion", pushing the material closer together so neutron capture is more likely is usually desired. Also wondering if this new structure has the same self sharping properties as depleted.
mikeytown2··on Always Be Quitting
After getting acquired and some people laid off and replaced with lower cost workers; I think the only reason I have a job is because of the complexity of the system and that it was built quickly so documentation was lacking. This is a great article don't get me wrong, but if you get acquired people might see you as a cost vs asset.
mikeytown2··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
2011: httprl. Parallel http requests; can also issue a http request to its self for "asynchronous" function calls in php.

2014: apdqc. asynchronous MySQL driver used for the cache backend. Simplicity of the stack increased our uptime. async db writes are quick.

mikeytown2··on The looming software kill-switch lurking in aging Playstation hardware
What about LTO batteries? They have massive cycle lifetimes, and seem to not cause any issues if they fail.
mikeytown2··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
If they're all hosted on aws you'll have a bad day if it ever goes down.
