Terrorists and other shady characters are already creating advanced weapons using everyday AI chatbots.
mikelgan··on Why AI-generated slopaganda works
The fact that AI can create convincing fakes is not why it’s such a powerful tool of disinformation. Other attributes matter more.
mikelgan··on The revolt of the reader
Great piece and interesting data. The rate of LLM-based writing rejection among developers is even higher than I thought it would be.

To me, the glaring question is: What are we doing? The act of writing exists to 1) externalize and organize one's own thoughts for the purpose of considering and revising those thoughts; and 2) share one's own thoughts with other minds.

When we hand writing to a machine, we hand thinking to a machine, denying both our humanity and our role in the conversation.

mikelgan··on Why AI doesn't make companies more productive
Artificial Intelligence can make individual workers more productive. But what does that mean for the larger organization?
mikelgan··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
This seems obvious and predictable. of course people with flexibility, comfort, privacy, and convenience are better off than people forced into a grueling commute, a sick office, an exposed cubicle and toxic office politics
mikelgan··on Nielsen is leaning more on wearables to hear what people are watching
Because the streaming era has made it harder to capture reliable viewership data.

OpenAI’s new “teen” version is an admission by the company that it knows its chatbot is harmful and knows how to make it less harmful. It also knows harms are profitable.

mikelgan··on Meta pays pro-Meta influencers when countries look into teen safety on Instagram

mikelgan··on Instagram blocked the search terms. Its algorithm serves the videos anyway
Instagram said in July it would remove the harassment videos filmed on Meta glasses. Business Insider went looking a month later and found dozens still up. The more revealing finding came next. Interacting with a few of them was enough for the Reels feed to serve almost nothing else.
mikelgan··on Apple ordered to change app data consent prompts on iPhones and iPads
A German regulator accused Apple of giving the pop-ups a design that favored its own apps over third-party apps.
mikelgan··on AI 'productivity pollution': the hidden tax on everyone
One person's AI-fueled productivity causes extra work for everyone else. It's time to stop the delusional thinking about AI.
mikelgan··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Shrinking portion sizes for junk food is probably the best thing we could do. Some 37% of Americans are obese. Back in the 40s and 50s, a normal amount of, say, Coca-Cola was a tiny-ass little bottle. Now you can get a half-gallon at the movies.
mikelgan··on Analyzing data from Silicon Valley ventures and founders prosecuted for fraud
I'm thrilled someone has attempted to quantify the lies, fraud and deception that has been the norm here in Silicon Valley for decades. I've worked at startups, have friends who are entrepreneurs, everyone in my family has worked at startups, and there's no question that lying and deception are normal and expected here.
mikelgan··on Apple's war on OpenAI is about who owns the Attachment Economy
Both Apple and OpenAI want to demo desktop robots this year and ship early next year. It's a race between Apple engineers who stayed and Apple engineers who left.

Less than a year after declaring Texas the “epicenter of AI development,” Governor Greg Abbott has declared a moratorium on all new power grid connections for data centers—at least until developers provide more information about their projects’ potential impacts on the grid and communities.
mikelgan··on Wrinkles, an AI app that uncovers the hidden stories of places around you
A new app called Wrinkles uses your location to automatically surface stories about the places around you. Wrinkles, available on both iOS and Android, essentially acts as an AI-powered audio tour guide that reveals hidden history and local stories.
mikelgan··on Why it's impossible to get relevant news on Google News
You can use Google News to search social media for your specific phrase, or you can search news sites for the disconnected words in your phrase, but you can't search news sites for your actual phrase.

mikelgan··on Google has abandoned Google News?
Kagi, obviously (disclosure: My son works for Kagi.)
mikelgan··on Google has abandoned Google News?
I don't think that will work for what I'm looking for. I'm looking for very, VERY specific subjects like the Attachment Economy, synthetic relationships, and a hundreds others, and I need to know all the stories on this subjects or using these keywords that have been published in the United States in the past week.
mikelgan··on Google has abandoned Google News?
Now, when I do my traditional searches, a huge majority of some of my searches are from Instagram or other social media sites, not news publishing sites.

Many of my results are in foreign languages I cannot even identify.

Many of my results are published in foreign countries, not the U.S. as I specified.

Now, the most recent failure is that when I specify news published in, say, the past week, it just ignores that setting and gives me news published weeks, months or years in the past.

Google has abandoned Google News and let it crash into the dock.

mikelgan··on The Friend AI Pendant is not a product
It’s part of an art project, and the “canvas” is capitalism.
