metatronscube··on India announces plans for a Mars mission in 2013
Yeah that was my initial reaction as well, I just don't see it happening at all. I mean, we have to be serious here, they are going to put a Rover or something on Mars for $80 Million?!.......Nah.

I'm not saying that's they wont EVER, but they have to join us on planet earth before they start dreaming of other planets.

metatronscube··on Prosthetic retina restores sight in mice after brain's visual code is cracked
Well, considering my recent dealing with doctors and surgeons on this very subject of retina surgery...yes. I had torn retinas and the surgeon (who was very intelligent, and super nice) said that he is nothing more than a 'mechanic' since all they can really do at this stage is to 'tack' the torn parts of the retina back onto the back of the eye like a 'welder'. Their words, not mine. Surgeons generally defer to research scientist and engineers to carry out the research and cutting edge techniques, they practice those techniques on patients. Not belittling their work, but its research that comes up with this kind of stuff, not practicing doctors and surgeons.
metatronscube··on Prosthetic retina restores sight in mice after brain's visual code is cracked
This is wonderful, I'm excited we are entering an age where its now becoming normal to use technology to augment or repair the human body. Rather than our old approach of letting medical science bodge a repair or remove faulty body parts, we are turning to Scientists and Engineers to design prosthesis and build replacements. Given a few years, would it be possible to design a better retina?
metatronscube··on BSD vs. Linux
OSX BSD (or XNU based) is my operating system of choice. I used Suns and OSX during university and never been able to get into Linux.
metatronscube··on Apple requested 40$ royalties for every samsung phone sold
Sounds fair. Samsung's 'designs' are total ripoffs of the iPhone anyway.
metatronscube··on Released footage of the police raid on the Kim Dotcom mansion
Was the C-130 Gunship on standby circling overhead or something? Why were so many 'assets' thrown into a raid? Who sanctioned this? I would be looking for resignations and full hearing/inquiries into total miss allocation of resources.
metatronscube··on IPhone caused "crisis of design" at Samsung
The simple fact is that before the iphone, many 'smart' phones were complicated horrible devices (badly designed from a hardware point of view) with very poor UI/UX. Then after the iphone they were all like the iphone in some way or another. If you ask any non-technical person out there they will say the same. The iphone set the benchmark. So I can understand why apple feels like folk are just ripping them off at times and riding on their coat tails.
metatronscube··on Facebook Opens First International Engineering Office In London
Spreading like a cancer I see.
metatronscube··on 30 New OS X Mountain Lion Features in 2 Minutes
Looks like some solid improvements, especially for the price they are charging. I hope they keep pushing though, I feel it could be a little quicker (especially on my older macs) and I feel compared to Snow Leopard it is noticeably slower (things like airdrop don't work either). Performance and stability improvements would be a good next step. Easier said than done however.
metatronscube··on Why Google's Nexus 7 Tablet Is Hotter Than Apple's iPad
Spot on I'm my opinion. I have both, and the nexus is great but I prefer the iPad in so many ways. The price point for the nexus is the thing that initially made me buy, and if it wasn't for the price I would never have gotten an android device at all.
metatronscube··on How about an Olympic games for enhanced athletes?
I think this is inevitable, when the body has a limit, people will look for ways to push those limits. Augmenting and enhancing the human body has to be considered and may end up being beneficial for other purposes. I prefer bionic myself ;)
metatronscube··on Wikileaks credit card donation is back
Your most probably on one anyway for other reasons, and its not like you are going on a list of people who want to subvert the Government and carry out terrorist suicide missions, you are just donating to a cause that you find worthwhile (truth, freedom and democracy?), I doubt that you have to worry about a night time snatch and stress positions just yet.
metatronscube··on Inside Apple's Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adapter
I'm a network Engineer and even I have to work hard to remember the last time I used an Ethernet port. Configuring routers and switches and testing scenarios are mostly done remotely via labs (although I do configure and test locally a lot as well)

As far as end user goes and my daily life outside work, I very rarely use Ethernet. I suspect the average user just doesn't have the need for it any more.

metatronscube··on The New MacBook Pro: Unfixable, Unhackable, Untenable
Oh well, if you don't like it buy something else, but to be perfectly honest, 90% of folk out there will not be bothered with this at all. They are probably buying the laptop for its portability, price point and performance and like every aspect of life, there are trade offs. I would be quite happy (very happy in fact) with buying the new Macbook knowing that it has no upgrade ability.
metatronscube··on [dead]
I think that these craft are one of mans greatest achievements, so I don't mind hearing this over and over again :). The thought that no matter what, these craft will outlive the human race and continue hurtling through deep space for eons, is one that really blows me away.
metatronscube··on Chromebox
Well its creaking at the seams right now, I think given the progression of web technologies (even if they begin to use more hardware acceleration) it is going to become much slower over time as more intensive tasks are offloaded to the Hardware, its not an good indication at the moment that after a UI update its noticeably slower (at least for me) and a lot buggier.
metatronscube··on Chromebox
I wish I got the new ipad that's for sure. The first generation ipad beats the pants off my Acer chromebook and its got even worse with the new shiny UI.

And remember $300 over here (sunny Britain) is more like 300 quid, which is more like equivalent $460!! over there ;)

No one I have shown this to would buy it and they think im insane for doing so.

metatronscube··on Chromebox
Exactly, I get to 10 tabs and it grinds to a halt. That's 10 sites with nothing more than text and a few images (hardly 5 plugins)....its seriously underpowered as is and with the new UI update its as slow as a dog on the Acer.
metatronscube··on Chromebox
Yeah I used my Acer AC700 Chromebook for the same sort of things (research and keeping in touch) and I found it ground to a halt when I had more than 10 tabs open. The most recent UI update has rendered the thing useless for more than a few active tabs so im beginning to question what these are really for.

I honestly don't think these will get any market penetration they are just too under powered, sluggish and expensive. They are definitely no use as a primary machine but even as a secondary machine its basically useless (I mean you are paying 300 quid to open 10 tabs and nothing else!!!) Im reaching to my ipad for a second device.

metatronscube··on Assange loses extradition appeal
If you mean social position/power as well as being state sanctioned and run then yes, the mighty BBC is more authoritative but if you are looking for the accurate up to date unbiased details then I would choose the Guardian any day.

Thanks for the link.

metatronscube··on Human Rights Record of United States in 2011
Half of your points here are completely crap, and the other half are just outdated or inaccurate. I think you need to take the blinders off your eyes are wake up. Its a fact that China has lifted about 400 million of its own people out of poverty (a fact that even the EU says is probably one of the most remarkable things of the last 30 years)

The life expectancy of the average Chinese citizen has increased by about 3 years since 1990 to 71.4 which is 5 years (or there about)above the world average and 6-7years above the average level in developing countries. The US health care system is a joke in many other countries so you cant say that it comes anywhere as close.

I can say that having friends/family that have lived/worked Europe/UK, China and the US and I would say that the US is probably the very worst place out of the lot when it comes to basic freedoms. When I think of propaganda, no one does it better than the good old US of A.

metatronscube··on Human Rights Record of United States in 2011
What do you mean? In terms of population? Europe is around 700 million and the US is what 400 million at the most and China is even larger.

So given the population trails behind China and Europe, human rights in the US don't look that rosy (neither does the UK for that matter). I mean the US has for some time had the largest prison population on the planet. I'm just putting that out there as well, and try to understand what you are getting at?

metatronscube··on Facebook To Buy Opera? Maybe.
The browser wars appear to be heating up again. Its happened before and will no doubt happen again. I think this will be a bad thing because I could see each browser becoming a weapon to control privacy and the Internet in the way they see fit.

Imagine installing a browser that forces you to have a facebook account! and facebook logins for websites all over the place. yikes.

metatronscube··on SpaceX to relaunch rocket Tuesday 12:44 AM PST/ 3:44 AM EST
Watching this from Scotland live over the Internet. Feeling quite excited at the prospect of private enterprise supplying the International space station and hopefully kick starting something.
metatronscube··on I'm calling this Bubble 2.0, and it's ready to burst
I hope in a way this bubble would burst, I'm getting thoroughly sick of all this web2.0 bullshit. Its nothing but social networks and photo/something sharing sites. Nothing really happening and we need smart Engineers and developers getting back into some worthwhile endeavors. I blame Facebook.
metatronscube··on Will an IBM computer be your next mayor?
Erm...No :)

Well ok, I get what you are saying, but a machine intelligence would faithfully and honestly apply these perfect values every time without bias. When have you ever known a flesh and blood Government to do so?

metatronscube··on Will an IBM computer be your next mayor?
I think its worth exploring this concept. I wouldn't mind living under an AI controlled meritocracy ;). I don't care if an AI or a person is running a city as long as they are good at their job and they make sensible balanced decisions that are in the best interest of the people. If that's a machine intelligence then so be it, I for one welcome our IBM supercomputer super controller overlords.
metatronscube··on Forget about Kevlar: Liquid Body Armor Hardens on Impact
For the Dune reference! :)
metatronscube··on Google Announces Project Glass
This is great an everything, but I think Google really needs to concentrate on many of their half baked solutions they currently have. I am a huge fan of Google, but with their whole social drive recently and this (their take on augmented reality which to be honest just looks like another was of wrapping you into their facebook clone rather than providing any real context aware information) I'm beginning to feel they are really loosing it. I just bought a chromebook (as a lightweight browsing machine) and im massively disappointed because its just such a terribly laggy, glitchy and frustrating experience. Its very quickly becoming a 300 quid paper weight.

Google have many brilliant sounding pie in the sky ideas, but when it comes down to it they have to really ask themselves, will people actually be able to use this? Is it really worth chasing after this or will they concentrate their efforts and resources on other more achievable things.

metatronscube··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
I like to consider the total cost of ownership when purchasing a piece of hardware, which is hard to quantify and sometimes a touchy and subjective topic but I have found Apple Computers/Laptops to substantially outlast anything from Dell or HP. I would lay down 2K for an Apple and never quibble (that much) but I would never do that for any other brand (I have just had lots of very bad and costly experiences with them....Dell in particular)
