metabro··on Ask HN: How to practice data analytics skills?
From a product analytics perspective I’d suggest :

1. Think of a product that exists. Define a goal for the product and success metrics you will use. Dau, mau, user retention, incremental revenue etc. 2. Come up with gaurd rail metrics 3. Define performance and reliability metrics as well.

Now try to figure out how you would construct queries to answer these questions. And how would you visualize this info.

Then if you can find datasets or create synthetic data sets to actually write these queries or better yet create pipelines that ultimately feed a dashboard I think would be worthwhile.

metabro··on Ask HN: What companies offer maternity/paternity leave immediately?
Meta does and I’d assume other faangs as well
metabro··on Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job
>Being based in the SFBA, I have a strong preference for remote work

I would assume the opposite since meta is also based in sfba. If you were based in New Mexico instead this would make sense.

metabro··on Ask HN: What do data consultancies / data teams do?
It’s kind of the same question as to why do companies like meta have their own data engineering and analytics org. Can’t software engineers do that?

In my experience they can but not well. They could acquire the skills but it would take time and more importantly time away from what they are doing. Also, the software engineers working on applications don’t want to create and manage pipelines, manage access controls, data governance, create dashboards etc.

Some observations from first hand experience working as a data engineer at meta and working closely with software engineers - client and s ever side.

- their sql is not great. I was surprised by many engineers not knowing about grouping sets etc.

- very limited understanding of how to build analytical data marts and warehouses

- no experience with concepts of master data management etc. and data governance best practices as a whole

- not good ad visuallybrwpresenting information via charts. So poor dashboarding skills and often have to learn the technology.

- have no experience with etl patterns so end up with pipelines that don’t scale.

- they don’t have any interest in learning data engineering for analytics type of work.

- have no experience with building growth accounting and retention datasets.

So for mature organizations where data is an asset you want to do it well so you either need a specialized team in house or outsource it to a consulting company in your question.

metabro··on Remote workers are increasingly less productive, anxious, depressed and lonely
I worked remotely from 2014 and then switched employers and a chose to be onsite after the pandemic.

Reason being it’s so much easier to ramp in person and build trust with colleagues. I now go in a couple times a week on days when I have a lot of meetings.

Another factor is the work environment. My current big tech campus is an absolute pleasure to work out of a few days. My prior grey soulless bank employer was not inspiring at all. I also Don’t like wearing shirts with buttons or hard pants in the summer.

metabro··on Anybody ever interviewed at SpaceX before?
Senior sw make a base salary of 165k and principal at 216k. Do you. Consider these low?

metabro··on Ask HN: Is being remote affecting your job search?
Bay Area remote workers at top paying companies aren’t competing internationally so much as across the US. Wages might go down across the board vs going up in other places due to the race to the bottom nature of these things. But housing and stuff will likely continue to go up.
metabro··on Ask HN: Is being remote affecting your job search?
I agree that it increases equality but it’s a race to the lowest common denominator. If we just look at the US for instance. Assume typical Bay Area engineer makes 250k/yr. Rest of the country (exclude tech hubs), that number is <130k. Do you think Bay Area engineers when competing for remote jobs make closer to 250k or 130k? My guess is much much closer to the latter.
metabro··on Ask HN: How did you rebuild yourself after having hit rock bottom?
I know a lot of Saudi’s and also lived in the country. You are referring to a very small minority that practices polygamy. Most Saudi’s are in a monogamous marriage.
metabro··on Ask HN: How to make the most out of my break from work?
I’m relatively new to the area and work and family is where my time has been spent. Now that I don’t have to work for a few months I have time to spare. Any suggestions in how to meet friends , particularly here?
metabro··on Ask HN: I Need to Talk to Someone
Is it made up that finances are one of the primary reasons for divorce? Also, that women tend to leave more so than men if the men make significantly less (or none) than them?
metabro··on Ask HN: Ways to Maximize Income
Silicone valley type company or quant fund type companies. Target those.
metabro··on Ask HN: Plans for Weathering the Tech Recession?
There already has been a sharp downturn in the markets. Equity markets are forward looking so not sure why wait? Why not dollar cost average from here on out?
metabro··on Ask HN: Plans for Weathering the Tech Recession?
Your last 2 sentences conflict with point 1 and 2.

If companies don’t need as many employees in tech where the bloat is then why would they hire them back in the same proportion with new jobs? If they hire them back in a much smaller proportion then it would be hard to find a job, no?

metabro··on Ask HN: What are Larry Page and Sergey Brin working on these days?
> It's a one man show and the only goal is to keep morale high among employees.

I guess Elon is doing it wrong

metabro··on Ask HN: What skill do you want to develop or improve in 2023?
There’s plenty of “big goals” on ig, Twitter and tiktok. It also has a very grifter vibe but it’s hard to separate the 2.

I find this community to be one of the few places where people aren’t trying to constantly up sell themselves and that’s refreshing.

On my deathbed I’d probably wish I enjoyed the simple things that this world provided more - laughter, human companionship , raising a child.

metabro··on Ask HN: What skill do you want to develop or improve in 2023?
You seem deeply unhappy and dissatisfied with how your life turned out. I sometimes find myself there as well. It’s really not a good place to be. I hope you are getting the fundamentals - exercise, sunlight, sleep, nutrition. When one or all those things are poor I tend to feel at my worst.
metabro··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Yes I think having a paid off house would probably go along way in reducing my anxiety. But It’s not tenable in Bay Area. At least not at my income/wealth.

I’m assuming you don’t live in california?

metabro··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Interviewing takes time and I hate the leetcode grind so never have the motivation too. I know I’m making excuses and this is probably one of the more pragmatic steps I could take.
metabro··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Would it pay as well as big tech co? In the Bay Area where I live that might cause me more anxiety.

I could leave but I’d be further from family and further from tech jobs. Feels like I might trade one anxiety for another.

metabro··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Yes, I was diagnosed with anxiety but gave not been consistent with sessions. I feel I often have a hard time articulating what I’m anxious about.
metabro··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Yes the savings does not include my retirement accounts.

What would you suggest for networking. I could respond to more recruiters I leave on read on LinkedIn. What else can I or should I do?

metabro··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Couple years of savings accounting for debt which namely is a car loan. Costs me 600/month. No other debt.
metabro··on Ask HN: Why do you still live in the Bay Area?
I’ll bite.

1. Access to tech campus and seeing people in person. 2. Access to plenty of tech jobs (if layed off) and in person vs remote isn’t of much consequence.

If remote work is here to stay 2023 and onward I likely won’t be here in 2024.

metabro··on More people want to leave San Francisco than any other city
Yup. Right now I’m renting. Not great but it’s ok. But in a year I plan to start house shopping and it’s not going to be in the Bay Area.
metabro··on More people want to leave San Francisco than any other city
I’d like to provide another data point for perspective. I rent a single family home with a 2 car garage and 3 bedrooms for under 3500. I am under 20 minutes from Palo Alto. 20 minutes to San Jose. Have access to the Bart which takes me under an hr to get to sf.

My cash comp is around 225k a year. Im not a staff engineer and My incone seems pretty average for swe engineers in the area.

We have a kid but I’m the single earner at the moment. Sure, buying a house wouldn’t be feasible on my income in the moment if I want to be close to work. The Bay Area is expensive but it feels like your experience is a bit more extreme than mine has been. I don’t think my situation is uncomfortable by any means.

metabro··on Meta cuts Responsible Innovation Team
20k is 240k a year. That’s not an atypical base salary for someone fairly senior at a faang. Then there bonus which brings cash comp to around 290k.

Rsu is the largest part of comp for a senior person so more that half. So add another 300 k on top of that.

That’s a comp of close to 600k a year or 50k a month when averaged out.

metabro··on Actually, Maybe Don’t Learn to Code
Isn’t that the case with education in general. Most of it is online for free now. Why do we pay for college?
metabro··on Ask HN: What's your greatest enjoyment in life?
I’m assuming you aren’t Japanese based on your Other comments. How has dating and your social life been in Japan.
metabro··on Ask HN: 6-hour workdays more important than 4-day workweeks IMO
There just is so much work that I don’t get how working 4 days will workout. The work isn’t going to scale down. The deadlines I don’t think will change.

At my company which is a very typical big sv company, no one is watching how long you work but the work needs to get done.
