menshiki··on $2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra
> Windows 11 Pro Edition > Windows 11 Deluxe Edition

This sounds insane to a Mac user.

menshiki··on $2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra
Because all what consumer hardware companies can do is copy Apple.
menshiki··on Resetting Xbox
> Microsoft never had any clue what it takes to make a console - a console.

The 85 million people who've bought the Xbox 360 would disagree.

menshiki··on YouTube Just Ate TV. It's Only Getting Started
YouTube's automatic and forced AI translation has to be the worst feature of this decade.
menshiki··on Gemini 2.5 Flash
As a person mostly using AI for everyday tasks and business-related research, it's very impressive how quickly they've progressed. I would consider all models before 2.0 totally unusable. Their web interface, however, is so much worse than that of the ChatGPT macOS app.
menshiki··on Did Bing and Gemini Got Dumbed Down Recently?
I've experienced the opposite. Recently, I've been getting amazing results from Gemini running 2.5 Pro.
menshiki··on BetterDisplay: Extra Configuration Options for macOS
I run this app 24/7, mainly for the 'High Resolution' option. It's a lifesaver if you use a Mac without one of the expensive Apple screens.
menshiki··on Why Discover is no American Express
In Japan/Taiwan they seem to be widely accepted. Most places in Japan that accept VISA/MC, also accept AmEx.
menshiki··on Why Discover is no American Express
I'm quite curious about why you hated it so much.
menshiki··on The Algorithm Behind Jim Simons's Success
One of my favorite episodes of Acquired. Truly inspiring.
menshiki··on Ask HN: What risks would you take if you knew you had nothing to lose?
Last year, I quit my very stable job in academia to join a brand new company as the employee number 1. I think that is as far as I can go even in this hypothetical scenario.
menshiki··on Ask HN: Small, flat mice for tiny hands? (Similar to the Magic Mouse)
Very impressive, but no USB-C?
menshiki··on Ask HN: How many RSS feeds do you subscribe to?
Around 40. Most are tech news and tech blogs.
menshiki··on Nvidia adds $277B in market value, Wall Street's largest one-day gain in history
Shouldn't TSMC be the most valuable company in the world then?
menshiki··on Nvidia adds $277B in market value, Wall Street's largest one-day gain in history
I agree. And I believe that the value will keep declining.
menshiki··on Nvidia adds $277B in market value, Wall Street's largest one-day gain in history
Nvidia is heavily overpriced at the moment. My personal prediction is that in the long term, Nvidia can expect a similar situation to what happened to Tesla, which involves a relatively slow price correction after the AI hype diminishes. The EV hype slowly died out, and we can see it reflected in the prices of all EV companies.
menshiki··on The Economics of Status (2006)
> How much one employee is paid is often less important to him than how his pay compares with that of other employees.

Is this actually true of most people?

menshiki··on Super Mario 64 on the Web
Very impressive!
menshiki··on Ask HN: What you paying for .com renewal and with whom
Cloudflare Registrar has been amazing for me.
menshiki··on Ask HN: Did macOS Sonoma break your iCloud setup?
I use iCloud more as an archive where I put things I am not actively working on. I didn't encounter any issues with Sonoma but I believe your use case is a lot more advanced.
menshiki··on Microsoft defends Edge's predatory practices with cringe, audacious reply on X
Exactly. Most office workers don't really have a choice. Someone in the corporate hierarchy decided to get the Office 365 subscription because that way everything would come bundled up together.
menshiki··on Microsoft defends Edge's predatory practices with cringe, audacious reply on X
What sane person would willingly use Microsoft's software?
menshiki··on Ask HN: Has your YouTube usage decreased?
I subscribed to premium a few months ago. I personally don't think YouTube has negative impact on my mental. Twitter and IG definitely did and I deleted my accounts there.
menshiki··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
Is it true for Zenimax and Mojang as well?
menshiki··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
Is it a coincidence that all of them are Polish?
menshiki··on Ask HN: What work/office purchase transformed your life?
AirPods Pro without a doubt. It's the only item in my life that if it broke, I would immediately buy a replacement. I used them in the office to isolate myself from other people and when I'm walking outside to isolate myself from cars.
menshiki··on Kai Fu Lee's New AI Company: Yi-Open Source
Kai Fu Lee has so many terrible takes. Some things he says are borderline delusional.
menshiki··on What China's slow-motion real estate crisis means for the global economy
> I also blame a lack of English and Mandarin fluency in China and US respectively for causing this issue. The average Chinese or American doesn't get a chance to see life on the other side, so people end up building orientalized images.

I doubt the lack of English and Mandarin fluency is a big factor here. The CCP made a deliberate choice to isolate China from the outside world as much as possible.

menshiki··on Luxury beliefs are status symbols (2022)
It's even more funny seeing it contrast with the rest of the world.
menshiki··on Luxury beliefs are status symbols (2022)
> They found that individuals with higher income or a higher social status were the most likely to say that success results from luck and connections rather than hard work, while low-income individuals were more likely to say success comes from hard work and individual effort.

This is basically the old paradigm saying that "people don't make money, money makes money." No one became a billionaire without being in the right place and knowing the right people. Access to that environment can be only gained if one already has significant capital. I guess this is what they mean by luck.
