melissalobos··on Writing a C Compiler is a book
Unfortunately those works create the compiler in C, whereas this work is done in python. In particular "Retargetable C Compiler" spends a huge amount of space dealing with managing data in C and not much on compiling.
melissalobos··on NotepadNext: A cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
> The horrific font rendering that turned underscores into spaces

I have geany open right now and it is displaying underscores just fine with Noto Sans Mono. I have no idea what configuration you were using or what fonts, but this shouldn't be a problem currently.

melissalobos··on Using Windows after 15 years on Linux
> you should at least have rebooted your PC 65 times

Really not every CVE in the kernel applies to every system and configuration. You can compile the linux kernel in all kinds of different ways and a decent number of security vulnerabilities found in any given year only apply to unusual configurations.

melissalobos··on A Square Meal – Foods of the ‘20s and ‘30s
Is it possible that was meant as satire? I wouldn't believe that food would be a valid content warning. The author may have been trying to humorous, or maybe there are people that have issues with food that cause them problems when they read about it. I think it may be worth it to try to think about why they put that there instead of just reacting.
melissalobos··on Hand-optimizing the TCC code generator
Really GCC -O1 is usually plenty fast if you are just precompiling things at startup that your main executable would dynamically load. The bigger question is, would you really want to be using a language with manual memory management for writing extensions to a program? Maybe including the boehm gc with it would not be terrible.
melissalobos··on All you need is links
I don't think I really agree about tags just being links to a nonexistent endpoint. I feel like there is some value in the curation of tags. And tags as a navigation mechanism are useful on their own.
melissalobos··on Xfce Terminal 1.0.0 stable release
I find people do not appreciate how good KDE has gotten after the 4.0 era. konsole also has a lot of other great terminal features I miss whenever I use gnome-terminal at a client site(RHEL-8).
melissalobos··on Nicaraguan Sign Language
In the remote past, yes. It is more interesting that this happened recently.
melissalobos··on Identities in Higher Calculus and Special Functions
Not usually. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CORDIC is a bit more common, or if they are using an approximation, some form of min-max rational function approximation.
melissalobos··on Old Spleens Suck (2021)
At least it was related to the decision to remove a spleen or not. In at least one case I now know of, in a young patient they decided to keep the spleen.

In some cases hearing of unextraordinary events helps to calibrate what extraordinary is. I have never suffered a spleen injury, but have heard of lots of young men having theirs removed when I was younger. This anecdote leads me to believe those may have been extraordinary cases. At the very least I no longer think doctors routinely just remove spleens as I once did.

melissalobos··on Old imageshack images have a 1:5 chance of showing a Ukranian flag
For context Imageshack at one point hosted a large majority of the images on SomethingAwful.
melissalobos··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get for development?
I think I have heard it called Clevo, for that particular company in the past, I don't know if that is still true.
melissalobos··on This Pokémon Does Not Exist: Using AI models to create fake cards that look real
https://twitter.com/ronvoluted/status/1506254884961611781?s=...

The link wasn't working for me, but I found this tweet by the author.

melissalobos··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get for development?
> Currently use Pop!_OS

> I have a high budget

There is some company that makes somewhat pricey laptops and works on some Linux OS. Maybe try looking at those laptops, they might have some support for Pop!_OS.

Edit: The joke here is that the company that makes Pop!_OS also makes laptops that are decent, but pricey.

melissalobos··on Physics in a diverse world, or a spherical cow model of physics talent
From what I can tell from this text, their solution to increase diversity is to add more dimensions on which to judge a candidate, since an infinite dimensional orange is all skin. In this way any given candidate could be judged as best so when hiring based on objective factors you can also give preference to diverse candidates.

Which seems to be a version of just arbitrarily choosing a candidate that you wanted to hire(for diversity purposes), but who wouldn't normally meet the criteria.

melissalobos··on PyPI in a Box (2020)
I think the idea here isn't that there isn't a PyPI mirror in Africa. It is that not everyone has internet, so this person wants to have a tiny computer output a local WiFi network people can connect to and download pip packages. Imagine a small town or village with some power and a classroom, but no internet. A teacher could setup a network and have students connect to this device and download packages so they can complete some assignment/make the next Facebook.
melissalobos··on Epic Games is making hundreds of temp testers into full employees with benefits
Hopefully that is what this is. I would try to reserve judgement until more details are out, but it does look good.
melissalobos··on “The Wall” Housing Structure In Fermont, Quebec
I think that is the point they was making. Also I read this in a Brunswick french accent until the word shortage, and it kinda worked(as franco-english like they were describing).
melissalobos··on What is the difference between radix trees and Patricia tries?
Given the talk on compressing Wordle data. I thought people might be interesting an older method based on Patricia tries.
melissalobos··on Aral Sea
It isn't the only one either, but most others aren't as shallow where the changes are as obvious.
melissalobos··on C meeting is over. C23 added:
>IME ObjC (unlike C++) automatically supports the latest C standards,

This is only true as long as the changes in C aren't conflicting with ObjC. In the future if ObjC is deemed dead by the council it won't have to worry about such things. So C58 may have tons of things that don't work in ObjC98 (or whatever the ObjC version is).

melissalobos··on C meeting is over. C23 added:
People don't really get the distinction you make here, which is a shame. Often any VLA's are outlawed which is tossing the baby out with the bathwater.
melissalobos··on “The Wall” Housing Structure In Fermont, Quebec
Thanks for sharing this, I have always wanted to go to Labrador. Just need much higher resolution pictures(send back a mirrorless DSLR to 2009?).
melissalobos··on The wine tasting event: Distinguishing reds from whites (2014)
Is this a joke, or an actual experience? I could kind of believe that if they were unfamiliar with the products they might confuse them, but 7-Up has a distinct lemon-lime flavor, and Fanta is, well, a WWII poverty drink.
melissalobos··on Belgium approves four-day week
Consider this, imagine someone working every single waking minute at their job. Clearly they will not be very happy and after a time not very productive. So there exists some optimum level of productivity between 0 and 18 hours of work per day. The big question is whether it is closer to the 0 or closer to the 18. Currently there is some good evidence for it being in the 3-6 hour range(I don't have the studies on hand, maybe someone else can chip in here). Now that is of actual productive work and not "work"(where you are just visible in the office or sitting at a meeting table).
melissalobos··on MonoLisa – A font designed for developers
I like some like ff, but </ is too far.
melissalobos··on MonoLisa – A font designed for developers
I like it except for the ligatures with the < and /'s. Thanks for the recommendation, it encouraged me to revisit my font choices.
melissalobos··on AI is changing chemical discovery
This is a little disingenuous, that is like saying scarcity doesn't exist since you can buy almost anything at any price. There is always an implied "in a reasonable budget".
melissalobos··on Compile-Time Sort in D
Not sure why this was downvoted, it was a valid comparison from someone who is highly involved in Nim development. Nim compiles to C(by default, other backends available) and the static means it is done at compile time.

The article itself is a D implementation of something done in C++ to show how D does it, and how much simpler it is. The Nim example is right in line with this.

melissalobos··on Show HN: EBNF Specification of the BBC Shipping Forecast
Is there any source that has all(or at least 1000+) of the historic shipping forecasts? I have an old tool to do probabilistic parsing that I would like to try on this.
