maxden··on Cups Printing System Open-Source Development Has Seemingly Dried Up
There has been a few such posts on HN in the past. eg:

FalsiScan – Make it look like a PDF has been hand signed and scanned

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22811653

maxden··on CEO of Cyber Fraud Startup NS8 Arrested by FBI, Facing Fraud Charges
Sounds like they might have used the CEOs computer and perhaps he has a modified PDF report ready, downloaded the actual report but provided the altered version.

Agree with the other comments, the auditor should get the reports independently or use their own laptop to login/get the report.

maxden··on When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number
This got picked up by the news in Australia [0], they also interviewed the author [1].

maxden··on Who needs a case? The 3D Printed Mil-Plastic is here
They mentioned they didn't want any supports, so presumably it means single fins?
maxden··on MGA Entertainment: A privately-owned toy company doing billions in revenue
"We need to make the ultimate unboxing toy." from the article certainly makes that worse too.
maxden··on AI slays top F-16 pilot in DARPA dogfight simulation
You could watch some of these DCS dogfighting videos, there is a mixture of guns only or short range missiles.

Here is one where the flightsim pilot dogfights a French Rafale pilot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgDZ4BLk0Pw

maxden··on Military Helicopters Descend on Washington in Bizarre Low-Altitude Show of Force
I can only imagine this will increase the number of people carrying lasers now.
maxden··on Just some red flags. No big deal. Just ignore them
Agreed. Any how can they write something like this:

"they had claimed (and lied) that "your manager will be able to see the results of this". First of all, I doubt that was true."

maxden··on Walmart says it will discontinue Jet
Some customers might not like other customers knowing where they live? Obviously you can obscure some details but if you remove names would it require the customer to scan the package to confirm its theirs? I guess you could make it opt in for community delivery, otherwise you wait for a doordash delivery?
maxden··on No One Goes There Anymore
To get people to sign up to their patreon?
maxden··on Firefox 76
On windows they had a drop shadow effect outside the address bar which is less pronounced now.
maxden··on Apple, Google ban location tracking in apps using their contact-tracing system
Australia has deployed their app but haven't released the source code yet, and may not release all of it, so until it actually happens who knows.

Also while the app on the phone has been released, the actual data wont be sent on to contract tracers until more testing and privacy policies are finalised.[0] [0]https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-02/coronavirus-app-curre...

maxden··on Dissection of COVIDSafe (Android): Australian government's contact tracing app
Yes, I thought they said a few days ago that the source code will be made available for scrutiny but this now how its being reported:

"Some, if not all, of the app’s source code will be made public."

maxden··on Dissection of COVIDSafe (Android): Australian government's contact tracing app
The ABC is reporting that the server must store data in Australia and the data cannot be transferred overseas.
maxden··on The Great Toilet Paper Scare of 1973 (2014)
I also think there are now a couple of new factors affecting it. With people staying at home, the demand of toilet paper has shifted to the home more. People might be limiting their trips to the shop and are bulk buying more. But I agree the hoarding is still creating a shortage of toilet paper (and pasta, meat etc). It will be good when people have enough and we see things stocked on the shelves like normal. Although with potential businesses closing or enforced self isolation, I can't see the shelves looking normal for a while. Been a run on bottle shops, Bunnings etc as well.

It's been interesting to see what gets sold out, there is still plenty of canned tuna etc, but no lemon juice (but there is lime juice). Didn't realise people used lemon juice so much.

maxden··on Effect of economic crisis on America’s small businesses [slides]
It could be because the application of medical care is skewed towards the young, such that they survive and those older or with less chance of surviving die. If you can reduce the demand on hospital services, then you might have enough resources to treat those high mortality cases, and under those circumstances they may survive.
maxden··on Oregon has first confirmed Covid-19 case
but how would you know if you have covid-19 if you have symptoms of a common cold and you haven't been exposed to the reported high risk items. Although as it gets more widespread it could come from anywhere.

Will we get to a point where if we have cold like symptoms we are expected to consider the virus and act accordingly?

maxden··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
I would have expected to see Russia reporting more than two cases given the travel between the two countries.
maxden··on Automating receipt processing with deep learning
Looks like the submitter is trying some A/B testing on getting clicks to their site.
maxden··on Demoscene, the secret behind Finnish game industry
I like how he carried the bee/wasp/hornet(?) logo from the 1993 Utopos game to the ships on his current game Guntech.
maxden··on Download abandonware games, from 1978 to 2010
I was curious if they had any viruses.. the following is from their FAQ

== We never modify the game archives we provide, but not all of them are tested by an antivirus. However, old DOS programs won't be able to contaminate your system. Windows games may be provided with a NoCD program, these are well known to carry malware or worms. Always check with an antivirus, like VirusTotal. We do not take any responsibilities for system damage on your computer, use at your own risk. == https://www.myabandonware.com/faq/

maxden··on Tesla Cybertruck [video]
Maybe they were supposed to use the first ball that was smaller?

Certainly came as a surprise to Elon.

I notice they let the panel glass bounce in the drop test, which isn't similar to a window installation.

maxden··on NSW Digital Driver Licence
Although as others have posted, apparently the police are not allowed to touch the phone, but people are used to handing over the current plastic license so would likely hand over their phone unless instructed otherwise.

It was news to me that you can lock android and iOS to a certain app so that would be a good thing to do if your license is requested.

maxden··on Spiders and ants inspire metal that won't sink
There is also the liquiGlide developed from MIT research https://www.wired.com/2015/07/physics-behind-no-stick-ketchu...
maxden··on Spiders and ants inspire metal that won't sink
Similar to funnel web spiders. You have to be careful removing 'dead' ones from a pool as they can survive over 24 hours underwater.

maxden··on NSW Digital Driver Licence
You can only touch your phone if its secured and its for navigation so they are avoiding the problem when people are pulled over for using their mobile phone and saying they were getting their license ready etc. They have created a problem where people know not to touch their phone, but if you get pulled over and get your license ready you are breaking the no touch rule.
maxden··on Boeing whistleblower raises doubts over 787 oxygen system
The US Air Force has/had problems with the KC-46 (767) being delivered from Boeing with FOD and tools left in the aircraft. So they could use some improvements in the quality control area.

maxden··on Migrating Russian eagles run up data roaming charges
Reminds me of a Polish group doing a Stork study which racked up £2,010 in charges when someone found the sim and used it to make voice calls.

maxden··on Kitty Hawk reveals its secret project, Heaviside
There has been at least two cases recently of the main rotor blades as a whole detaching in flight. Gearbox failure caused the second crash [1]

On the older 'teetering head' designs like the Huey, you can bump the mast (rotor shaft) in aggressive nose overs or low g conditions which would also separate the rotors from the aircraft.
