mattnguyen··on Show HN: A web debugger an ex-Cloudflare team has been working on for 4 years
I built a similar tool in 2016 called Bugcam that does exactly this. It was also a chrome extension with the ability to tie console logs and network traffic to screenrecordings. Jam looks really polished and far more usable than the weekend hack I put together :) Well done!

The explanation for why OP built Jam was precisely the motivation I had for building Bugcam. I had transitioned to a team in Europe as part of an acquisition that had non-technical PMs filing bug reports. Their reports were completely nondescript and incredibly frustrating to decipher and repro.

I ended up abandoning the project due to other opportunities that came up. One interesting thing I noticed was that a significant percentage of users downloaded Bugcam to record themselves playing games for YouTube. Perhaps there was another opportunity there, but I decided not to pursue it.

Congrats on the product and best of luck Jam team!

mattnguyen··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
Is there a wireless mechanical _split_ keyboard with tilt and wrist support?

I currently have a Kinesis Freestyle Pro, which is fine for me, but they do not support a wireless version. This has helped with my wrist issues, but it's not practical for traveling.

mattnguyen··on FFmpeg 4.3
We recently started building a video player for go-flutter-desktop using FFmpeg. It's been immensely frustrating as the audio and video is slightly out of sync and requires a bit of tuning.

If anyone has experience with FFmpeg, I'd greatly appreciate if you could take a look! https://github.com/telefuel/video_player_testbed/issues/1

I came across their NSF research proposal abstract [1] and it is indeed quite interesting. I'm curious about their federation model and how exactly they're enabling privacy.

mattnguyen··on Telegram introduces feature to prevent users from texting too often in a group
Good question. I don't have any sources on hand, but I've heard whispers that they should launch by end of Oct. We'll see where they land then.

I haven't looked into it too deeply except what they've released here: https://test.ton.org/download.html

mattnguyen··on Telegram introduces feature to prevent users from texting too often in a group
If you use Telegram a lot, you should check out Telefuel.com. We're building Telefuel for power users and teams, and recently rolled out a feature to filter for unread messages. Might be useful for you!
mattnguyen··on Telegram introduces feature to prevent users from texting too often in a group
A growing number of people and organizations are starting to choose Telegram over Slack. This became prevalent in the blockchain space where pretty much everyone prefers Telegram to other messaging apps. OTC brokers, quant funds, and the largest exchanges use Telegram in some capacity, some almost exclusively.

Since the official Telegram clients are open source and the org encourages open competition between third party clients, it's now possible to build a Slack-like experience with workspaces, folders, integrations, and hot keys. Telefuel.com is one example.

As Telegram launches their $1.7bn blockchain by eoy, it'll be interesting to see how they develop their crypto-economy. There seems to be a bit of development activity in various Telegram groups, but there's still a cloud of secrecy about the whole thing.

Disclosure - I cofounded Telefuel.

mattnguyen··on Data API for Amazon Aurora Serverless
Jeremy has updated the post in response to the announcement.

- Lots of improvements & better documentation

- Smaller response size, but can be cut down a lot more

- Sub 100ms query performance

> I’m really impressed by the updates that have been made. I do want to reiterate that this isn’t an easy problem to solve, so I think the strides they’ve made are quite good. I’m not sure how connection management works under the hood, so I’ll likely need to experiment with that a bit to measure concurrent connection performance.

It's currently backed by ETH but is moving towards multi-collateral assets. Today, they announced a partnership with Omisego [1], with one goal to allow OMG to be used as a type of collateral. There's also chatter about using DIGIX, which is another stablecoin pegged to the price of gold.

The mechanism by which they maintain stability is quite fascinating. From the whitepaper [2]:

> The Dai Target Price is used to determine the collateral-to-debt ratio of a CDP, and thus the Target Price represents the price at which Dai is backed by collateral in the long term. The Target Price is continuously adjusted according to the current Target Rate. Automatic Target Rate adjustments ensure that the Dai market price remains stabilized around the Target Price in the short term.

> When the market price of Dai is below the Target Price, the Target Rate increases. This causes the Target Price to increase at a higher rate, causing generation of Dai to become more expensive. This leads to CDP users covering their CDPs and leaving the ecosystem, causing the outstanding supply of Dai to decrease. At the same time, the increased Target Rate causes the capital gains from holding Dai to increase, leading to a corresponding increase in Dai demand. This combination of reduced supply and increased demand causes the Dai market price to increase, pushing it up towards the Target Price.

mattnguyen··on Middle-Class Families Increasingly Look to Community Colleges
My older sibling and I both grew up in a single-parent household. Since we were tight on money, my sister decided to go to community college after high school in part to look after me while our parent worked. After two years, my sibling transferred with a full ride to a good university.

Looking to my sibling's experience, I decided to leave high school when I turned 16 to attend community college and accrue transfer credits. 2.5 years later, I transferred to a good university and graduated earlier than my high school peers, saving tens of thousands of dollars. I had a blast during this time, as it really helped shape my most formative years of development, especially being exposed to so many diverse groups (as you would expect at a community college).

Now my other younger family members are looking to my experiences and deciding for themselves if the last two years of high school or first two years of university education are important to them. Now they are taking the community college route to save money, and they seem to understand that they can still derive meaningful experiences and relationships.

It doesn't follow that a "single monolithic ledger" means Bitcoin is decentralized. Since all (full) nodes carry a copy of the entire ledger and every participant in the network can propose transaction blocks to the blockchain, there isn't one party that controls writing to the ledger.

Risk of centralization comes from mining pools that control 51% of the hashing power. [1]
