martin_henk··on Apple and Globalstar Rumored to Announce Satellite Connectivity for iPhone 14
Tmobile would still need masts to redirect the signal, correct? But Apple is rumored to receive the satellite signal directly?
martin_henk··on Walking Tokyo for Seven Days
Good plan. I think Shibuya changed the most from a bird's eye view. But there's new developments all over as usual.
martin_henk··on Asus put out like 40 models of a laptop called the “Eee PC” (2021)
Don't remember which one i had, but my eeePC was awesome... I even could turn it into a hackintosh.
martin_henk··on Cytopia: Open-source city simulator with pixel-art graphics
I was just looking into city builder games this weekend, after having binged on SC4000 for two weeks. There are actually a lot of new city builder games on the market, but their focus is mostly more narrow than the original SC series.
martin_henk··on Ask HN: Why is there no small Android phone?
rakuten hand. japan domestic
martin_henk··on Fairphone 4 has a five-year warranty and aims for six years of updates
at this point, an iphone up to v8 seems most sustainable. but of course no one knows how long an 8 or even 13 will be updated or receive service.

i would still like an alternative option that is a) user reparable b) can be updated on an open source/non corporate basis

martin_henk··on Toyota has stepped up lobbying to preserve its investments in hybrids, hydrogen
Very good from Toyota. They take a diplomatic approach for the global society.

As they don't enforce a complete structural upheaval in a short period, but rather promise they will support old eco systems until we are really sure what works best in the post gasoline world.

martin_henk··on Why keyboard shortcuts don't work on non-US layouts and how devs could fix it
Most prominent for me: ctrl+z on a german keyboard. You have to stretch your hand a lot.
martin_henk··on Japanese companies fight for share of EUV chip technology sector
Auto OEM's have strict rules regarding procurement. Therefore it's impossible to make business with them as a unknown startup. Tier 1 suppliers can introduce un certified sub vendors and such.
martin_henk··on Video Games and the False Sense of Achievement
E-sports professionals and successful full-time streamers might be a different story.
martin_henk··on Makers, Don't Let Yourself Be Forced into the 'Manager Schedule'
Actually someone understands my trouble
martin_henk··on Most first-time visitors to Japan are struck by how clean the country is
Because everybody does their 5cents here... not 50dollars or 5 dollars. Just THEIR 5cents
martin_henk··on Tokyo subway’s humble duct-tape typographer
Living in Tokyo, I spotted one of these tapings lately. It’s unbelievable how accurate they look. Not perfect typography, but as a designer I immediately sensed craftsmanship. Thanks OP for picking this up.
martin_henk··on Michelin Rolls Out an Airless Tire That Will Be “Puncture-Proof”
i don't know why, but adding a wall seems like stiffening the whole wheel. secondly, manufacturing the same thing with walls seem kind of impossible.
martin_henk··on Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Alphabet’s Board of Directors
In some ways, ms is more progressive than the goog at the moment. Office 365 is pretty good imho. Win 10 feels flakey though.
martin_henk··on The Mobile-Home Trap (2015)
Sounds like a good old japanese zaibatsu.
martin_henk··on Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Alphabet’s Board of Directors
Very interesting. Social media today is a much more refined offering than google+. Google feels like microsoft nowadays. It’s something for adults to get things done. Your personal stuff happens on DM’s, instagram, snapchat, tiktok... much more so for young people. Therefore keeping search and social separated was a good thing.
martin_henk··on How Norwegian Air Upended Travel With Its Cheap Flights
I just flew with them from LAX to LGW. I think the experience was not bad, but the staff seemed sometimes pretty overwhelmed with the logistics of which passenger ordered what option.
martin_henk··on Xiaomi's global vice president Hugo Barra is leaving the company
I believe I share your stance. Probably the only approach to live your life in peace somehow. But there is a lot of real bullying going on. Maybe it is something no related to being a foreigner. Probably it is indeed the "culture". For me it is where I draw the line and it brought me some trouble. To me it would be the same as to allow sexual harrasment to happen during let's say a informal drinking party.
martin_henk··on Xiaomi's global vice president Hugo Barra is leaving the company
Thanks! That's a pretty good summery I guess. But there's a lot of outright bullying going on as well. I guess this where a lot of foreigners draw their line.
martin_henk··on Dentsu CEO resigns after overworked employee commits suicide
I live and work in Japan since 2011. The most part of this time in larger companies. Afaik Dentsu takes or took huge pride in being an elitist salaryman operation. People joining them couldn't be totally unaware of this. Keyence is another place with a similar reputation. Although you'll find more places like this, it is not that common. I am pretty sure every country has companies like this.

Further, Japanese people work long hours. Some will due to peer pressure. Some will cause they have nobody waiting at home. In some workplaces your colleagues are like friends. So, they socialize a lot during work hours. I think there is no single reason why Japanese people work longer hours than Europeans for example.

I am convinced however, that on the average a Japanese employee takes a huge amount of pride from doing a good job. The point: How to judge if a job was executed well or not? I experience this not to be so easy mostly due to the Japanese style of communication, which leaves a lot of space for ambiguity. Maybe long work hours stem from this.

martin_henk··on Japan’s Disposable Workers: Dumping Ground [video]
In Japan also highly educated people have problems finding jobs. Asia cares in general less about it's citizens than Europe I guess. System is massively skewed with little social upward mobility.
martin_henk··on Xiaomi unveils concept phone with near bezel-less display
I see... Would like to know how they do the bezel less part construction wise. Sharp uses the topglass as a kind of lens. That lenseffect 'covers' the actual bezel beneath...
martin_henk··on Xiaomi unveils concept phone with near bezel-less display
It is probably the same tech as Sharp Crystal phone for Sprint. Foxconn bought Sharp and starts peddling its tech?
martin_henk··on Why Tokyo Is the World’s Best Food City
Yep, i think so too. Kansai is less posh though on the average. Having the upscale experience might be important for some folks...
martin_henk··on Why Tokyo Is the World’s Best Food City
I bet that going to Kansai region (Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe/Nara) could beat Tokyo as far as food goes.
martin_henk··on Walking a mile is 3x more expensive than driving, from a fuel perspective
Exactly... If you would include the manufacturing/r&d/transport, walking probably would be the most efficient way if looking at just one mile
martin_henk··on Software error doomed Japanese Hitomi spacecraft
