maram··on Apple 'Hide My Email' vulnerability reveals peoples' real email addresses
The post is about a vulnerability in Apple under CEO Tim Cook, who did horrible things after Steve Jobs died — most importantly, changing the UI/UX.
maram··on Google just updated its algorithm. The Internet will never be the same
>>It's almost as if Google designed an algorithm update to specifically go after small bloggers. I've talked to so many people who've just had everything wiped out

While at the same time small businesses are being killed by the lockdown

maram··on 96% of US hospital websites share visitor info with Meta, Google, data brokers
It’s interesting how, most if not all, hospitals have switched to use Mychart https://www.mychart.org!
maram··on [dead]
>>could be an amazing move towards transparency and encouraging better corporate behaviour.

What about small and family businesses? Did you read Marc Andreeseen tweets linking to communism?

maram··on Apple changed how reading books works in iOS 16
>>The page turn animation was truly excellent.

iPhone iOS design used to be excellent. Since Apple switched to flat design, it was very clear that they were heading toward this path. I wrote about it in 2016: “ I predict that the technological disparity will increase dramatically. Most of the efforts that Steve Jobs put to “push the human race forward,” by making tech products easy-to-use to everyone, will be wasted.”

maram··on Redfin cuts 13% of staff, shuts down home-flipping business
>>shuts down home-flipping businesses

Did the story mention why?

maram··on Up to 30% of online reviews are fake and consumers can't tell the difference
I thought of an app for this after I noticed high paying users "Very Important Beauty Insider" fake reviews on Sephora. I tweeted to them and they replied, https://twitter.com/maram5e/status/1123360104596811777?s=20

A year later, NYtimes published a story on how one of the highest selling products was telling her employees to write reviews. https://twitter.com/maram5e/status/1218339532891983873?s=20

I wrote on here https://twitter.com/maram5e/status/1130299513011343366 service/product reviews are the new ads.

-- Amazon reviews Groupon reviews Sephora reviews Booking com reviews This is the beginning..we are entering a new whole world of decentralized power and brand authority. It's interesting to watch how big brands will continue to fight it.

maram··on Signal is secure, as proven by hackers
>>From my standpoint, software that requires that, is honeypot.

I couldn’t agree more. In August this story was trending here using basic 101 growth hacking tactics https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28340542

Trace the source. The account got deleted from Reddit.

maram··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Everyone should remember that the blog Steve Jobs wrote criticizing Adobes security was deleted at the start of the pandemic in June, 2020.

From the blog “Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.“

Here is the discussion we had https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23654011

maram··on Welcome Home, Garry Tan
Not to defend Thiel, but don’t you think that his exist from Facebook (after 17 years) because of the stance they took at the beginning of the pandemic is worthy of some attention?

Specially, that Facebook suffocated voices of Trump’s advisors who opposed the lockdown.

“Social media, particularly Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook, was actively suffocating voices, including mine, that dissented from the accepted COVID narrative. By August, Facebook told the Washington Post they had taken down seven million posts “for spreading coronavirus misinformation.” Meanwhile, Wikipedia crafted smears and distortions of my background and then locked it to edits”. —Dr. Scott Atlas, A Plague Upon Our House: My Fight at the Trump White House to Stop COVID from Destroying America

maram··on Welcome Home, Garry Tan
“Garry Tan is a moral canary in a coal mine. When people hate on Garry Tan, they out themselves as either evil or stupid, because in fact Garry is as close to a 100% good guy as you get”. —Paul Graham https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1460931338131890180 ————

Congratulations Garry! Your blogs were my inspirations when I was running my startup. I always remember this line:

“The ideal startup team involves really two major roles — builder, and hustler. I used to say it took three roles (designer, engineer, hustler).....In reality, I think designer / engineer can be abstracted to builder”.

maram··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
>> There simply must be a way to change how Google handles two-factor authentication which does not constantly lock out poor people who use the public library to access their email. It must be possible to make it so we do not constantly reach these dead-ends where Google tells patrons to endlessly loop through “I don’t have my phone” and “Try another way” until their account becomes locked permanently due to too many failed attempts.

Why is Google making it hard for the poor to access their email in these times?

it’s not like google just launched today. They have the data of these users, who use internet from public libraries.

maram··on Americans are drowning in spam
>> Hey email solved this problem for me for email and I want an equivalent type of service for phone and text, now.

I’ve been using Hey for two years now, and while it solved the spam problem, the UIUX makes it just so hard to use.

I’m keeping for one reason, it’s the shortest email I have.

maram··on What hacking AOL taught a generation of programmers
This is a funny story I read on hacking AOL messenger.

https://twitter.com/davidbyttow/status/1099112484974125056

maram··on Thanks HN for keeping it free of ads and trackers
Kudos to the silent heroes who are running it.

HN is indeed a rare place on the web.

maram··on Why Can’t I Leave a Three-Person iMessage Conversation?
>>If Leave this Conversation is grayed out on your iPhone, there are only three participants in the iMessage conversation, and you can’t convert a three-person iMessage conversation to an iMessage between two people. >> Even if you delete the entire conversation from your iPhone, you will be added back to the group the next time someone sends a message. The only way to leave a three-person iMessage conversation is to add someone else to the group so it becomes a four-person conversation: Then you can leave.
maram··on Facebook Struggles to Quell Uproar over Instagram’s Effect on Teens
>> We don't even need clinical reporting to tell that instagram has a bad effect on teens. Just observe a teenager of your family to see the values that are being taught through it

I wonder why Snapchat is never included in any discussion regarding behavioral experiments.

Facebook/Instagram to Snapchat stories is like Time/Vogue Magazine to tabloids. (This is not to defend FB)

I’m just curious why Snapchat and its stories is never mentioned.

maram··on Software Piracy and IP Management: Strategic Responses to Imitation
Steve Jobs always quoted Picasso

"Good artists copy, great artists steal"

maram··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
Now it makes sense!

Thanks a lot

maram··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
I have no idea but twitter uses google translate API
maram··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
>> it's easier to trick people into giving up yet more information than asking for it upfront

What I found interesting is that “translate tweet” button doesn’t appear unless you are signed in. Why cannot I read news from all over the world unless I’m signed in? Why do users have to sign in to read translated tweets in real time?

maram··on Apple making some employees wear body cams in response to leaks?
I was searching for a comment like this..some were so focused on clickbait others were "considering the source" but no one remembered this ad...This culture is so anti-steve..

I tweeted the ad here https://twitter.com/maram5e/status/1127394371433840655?s=20. Interestingly, Steve was fired from Apple exactly next year.

maram··on Massachusetts health notifications app installed without users’ knowledge
> In any case, the way they did this is creepy. There was no icon for the app; I had to look in Settings/Apps & Notifications to find it. And neither the official state press releases nor the few local news stories about it mention that the app was installed without notice. They use vague, lawyerly language about how it can be "enabled".

This incident and your comment reminded me of a story Bezos mentioned in his interview about the time Amazon deleted 1984 from kindle. The analogy he made makes me wonder how can we compare what happened here to what Amazon did..

“Without any notice or warning just electronically go into everybody’s Kindle, who had downloaded the book and just disappear it…so it would be as if we walked into your bedroom in the middle of the night, found your bookshelf, and just took that book away”

maram··on The level of Mac malware is not acceptable, says Apple exec at Epic trial
> “If you took Mac security techniques and applied them to the iOS ecosystem, with all those devices, all that value, it would get run over to a degree dramatically worse than is already happening on the Mac,” Federighi said in the testimony. “And as I say, today, we have a level of malware on the Mac that we don’t find acceptable and is much worse than iOS.”

Even with video editing and photos. If you took Mac QuickTime and compared it with iOS features you’d be shocked…

I didn’t know I was missing a lot until I upgraded from 5SE to XS. As someone who worked on creative content at advertising agencies I was beyond shocked to see the gap between features, particularly in video editing…

I started to use my phone to edit files because it’s it’s a lot faster but my neck hurts :(

maram··on The FTC is investigating Intuit over ‘free file’ tax returns
> But a string of ProPublica investigations found that Intuit had made Free File difficult to find, in one case adding code to prevent it from being indexed by search engines. As a result, many users who were eligible for the free TurboTax filing may have been diverted to paid products.

In one case adding code, and in most cases it’s just terrible UIUX and it’s so bad you don’t even know from where to start if you were going to investigate it.

maram··on Apple deletes Steve Jobs's “Thoughts on Flash”
Pay close attention to the time Apple deleted the essay.

Apple deleted the essay exactly a week before they stopped supporting Adobe flash.

Thanks for HackerNews it's all saved here =)

maram··on Signal Tries to Run the Most Honest Facebook Ad Campaign Ever, Gets Banned
> Signal planned this as a PR stun

I would say both Signal + Facebook. I only use iMessage.

In Apple I trust =)

maram··on What's Salesforce? (2019)
Interesting to Salesforce is trending in these times

Cannot wait to see “What’s Adobe?” =)

maram··on Has Y Combinator lost its way when the latest company is a Mac only widget?
>most businesses do far more than you can see from the outside

It’s enough that they made it into YC to conclude that there is a lot more going inside.

They filled out an application and had to have many milestones hit before they were accepted...

Regarding focusing on a niche it was a lesson I learned when I was filtering startups for investments I wrote about about my lesson before and how dumb I felt for passing on startups because they were too niche https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22507122

maram··on Twitter Confirms It Halted 'Hang Mike Pence' as a Trending Topic
Who is the enemy here? The people or governments? Arab spring succeeded in Tunisia because real time news sharing was faster than state-sponsored-media. The same thing happened in Egypt.

>set up some unpleasant accounts to use the tags before they do.

That's what governments tried to do, but they failed, and were failing. Bots with aged accounts and Tweetdeck got better in 2015.
